A big issue with mice is that they get dirty if you just put them on the table. Greases and such reduce mice DPI in a few hours of play time. a good mouse pad (make sure you get an washable one) can actually keep your mice clean and DPI up.

It also won't wear out like other crappy plastic/cloth mouse mats.

Now for a slightly related question, I noticed some small scratches underneath my new mouse that i have had about 2 or so weeks, i checked my old mouse and it also had some scratches, (very light scratches) Is this anything to worry about? will those minor scratches on the "mouse feet" alter how the mouse "flows"? is this normal wear and tear or should I be more vigilant about cleaning my hard pad before starting to game for a couple hours?

S&S in my opinion the best i've ever had and wouldn't change it for anything, period. 4S gets a bit sticky with your mouse surfaces (those 4 things at the bottom) and furthermore was way to cold for my hands QcK got that one for free or low prices at some of my SteelSeries order.. can't really remember. Anyways it's rather handy for mobile devices like laptops, easy to take with you but i'd prefer my S&S over the QcK allot.

everglide (old original plastic one): decent mousepad overall but it wears out pretty fast, and it wears out your mouse feet icemat (glas): great mousepad very fast speed, is a little cold and can get very anoying when you have a bit of dirt or w/e onder your mousefeet, lasts a lifetime too Corepad Magna(glas): great mousepad, overall quite comparable with the icemat, just a little less anoying with the dirt alsop mousepad(original cloth) decent mousepad, a little small for my liking, its also quite prone to move around on your desk. razer goliathus (cloth, speed edition): my current mousepad, has a great feeling and nice mousepeed, so far i'm liking it a lot, cant quite comment on the lifetime since i only had it for a couple of weeks (seems fine though)
