I don't know if this question has been answered yet, so i thought I'd ask.
Does anyone know what the maximum number of players per game/map will be in the final retail version of StarCraft II?
In the beta the most we were allowed was 8 players, but in WarCraft III the max was 12. I used to play a lot of 6v6 and 4v4v4 and 3v3v3v3 games in War3, and there were a few 12 player maps in the map pool. Maps like Ice Crown (12), Garden of War (12), and A River Runs Through It (10).

I want to say 12... but i think its 16

I could just be hallucinating, but in the unofficial patch notes for phase 2 I remember seeing somewhere they added maps, or have/had maps for 5v5 and 6v6.

No, in phase 2 the max players in the Blizzard map pool was still 8. I didn't play any custom games in phase 2, so I can't say about them.
Edit: I believe the 8 player map was name Extinction

custom games were 12 player max.

Someone said 12 and seemed sure of it, but I think the limit might be higher if you have observers. I seem to Blizzard saying 16, but again, I'm not sure (though I think I've obs'd 1v1s with >10 observers).
At any rate, we'll know for sure in a few days!

It was 12 for custom games (user made maps) but I'm not sure if the limit is higher for 1v1 with obs.

I remember they said max is 8.

I wonder if _anyone's_ PC is capable of rendering a full battle of 12 players with maxed armies all using spells too etc.

wait...seriously? proof? Honestly though I felt like 4v4 was more of a joke/practice match setting...seriously though, 6v6? I feel like 3v3v3v3 or 4v4v4 would make for a more interesting game dynamic.

has there been any clarification on if there will be more official maps when the game ships because I thought I remembered hearing in an interview somewhere that there won't be any more maps than in beta. I'm probably hallucinating though.

What might be fun is if there were custom 6v6 maps that had tweaked versions of all the races. For instance, you couldn't tech past tier 2 and the pop cap was at 100 per player. Might be interesting.
Then again, probably not.

I thought the max was 14? I saw a 7v7 game...

My brother's computer was able to keep above 15 FPS in a maxed out Nexus Wars game, and it's not quite top-end anymore. :p

Maxed out Nexus Wars was more like 1 FPS for me :D

I recall a custom map that someone tried to make a 16 player free for all, but discovered that SCII only allows for 16 player slots and one of those is reserved for neutral buildings/units. So I think 15 is the max.

There is going to be some ridiculous farming going on in 6v6 maps
|
Max in beta was 14 players... How are you coming up with 12 and all these wierd numbers. In the editor there was 16 slots but couldn't use them for 16 players.
