What I really would like to know is what Blizzard is expecting to get out of promoting e-sport.

Profit of course.

But through what route?

I doubt OGN and MBC are going to just roll over and take this.

I think the "dumb luck" argument is stupid because Blizzard is the ONLY company who can seemingly make an RTS that is both extremely popular and able to be played a high competitive level. They did it with Starcraft (most successful "e-sport" game ever), Warcraft 3 (obviously not as succesful but still 1000x more so than any other RTS) and now will do it again with Starcraft 2. 3 RTS which can be played as an esport is not dumb luck when no other company has even come close to making one. Blizzard obv knows wtf they're doing in designing games and have absolutely no competition in their field so why do people act like its so bad for them to want to take a big piece of the pie?

don't see how this can be better for esports, especially bw. with blizzard trying to take a huge slice of the pie, there will be less money to share with players/teams. the cost of sponsorship will go up and if that isn't enough to satisfy blizzard, then fans will have to pay somehow.

is GOMtv pay per view? if not it might be. also be prepared to say goodbye to all your free live steams from Korea (mystlord, kanata etc). TL might be charged to have any BW content. dont even need to talk about SC2. streams and replays will thus all need to be licensed/purchased from GomTV / Blizzard.

Blizzard has not been able to replicate the success of KESPA to any degree in other countries and now their destroying the organisation structure of something that made BW a wholewide hit. Talk about ungrateful. if not for korea's bw success, i doubt any of us will still be so involved in the game.

With GomTV being a monopoly, there will probably be just 2 leagues individual and a team league. By having to pay a fee to GomTV (and probably have to defer timings to GomTV's own competitions), the cost for OGN or MBCGame to host a competition is going to put extra burden on them. They will either have to find more sponsorship $ or reduce the amount shared with players/teams.

Or GomTV could do it the lazy way and simply not create any leagues of their own and simply wait for OGN/MBC to come to them. essentially just trying to take a cut w/o adding any extra value.

We might have to say goodbye to Nal_ra's old boy, hyungjun becomes a progamer, after talk or any such programs since OGN/MBC will be further burdened financially.

I would love to know what Kim Carrier, Kingdom, Nal_ra and the big fella has to say about this. Wonder if the next episode of After talk will focus on this.

I don't see how anyone can think it will be a smooth transition or a even achieve success near the same level from the get go.

It might be successful if the players in general get better salaries/prize money w/o squeezing the sponsors and fans. but that seems unlikely. SC's success mirrors that of football / Champions league/ the world cup. unless you distribute the revenue equitably to players/teams instead of relying on their sponsors, then its gonna hurt players/teams/fans - the very people who make SC an esport. Once you start introducing pay per view, fans are gonna leave. and the word exclusive almost always results in pay per view someway or another.

blizzard is just stupid to kill the osl and msl ... do they not care that these leagues kept people interested in sc long after the majority stop caring?

Blizzard isn't really making good games, they are making good platforms which later allow players to shape games to their liking, this happened with SC, War 3 and partially with WoW, - basically decent games with good open dev kits.

Yes, I think their GOM move is smart, but it is really dumb to kill ProLeague, MSL, and OSL. Maybe it is just audacious enough for Kespa to cave in so they can continue.

I'm prolly in the minority, but I couldn't be more supportive of blizzard's approach. Kespa has always been publically uncooperative with just about -anything- and i'm sorry but Blizzard does own these things. Kespa should follow international law when dealing with international companies. Kespa is fucking retarded for killing themselves. Seriously.

How are LittleBigPlanet and Wii Music doing? Household names, I'm sure.

all of you guys who are wondering/arguing about copyrights laws, that's why there's a possibility there will be a lawsuit so we find out where everything REALLY stands

That could either save esports or kill it.

I think starcraft has entered new territory with regards to games, it's been played so much and in a way so far beyond what was originally intended, that it seems like it shouldn't just fall into any pre-existing category of intellectual property with regards to games. I don't know anything about the law though, so I couldn't say.

All I know is that Blizzard running esports means the death of esports. Blizzard is a company that makes games, they don't have any practice with esports. Their focus is split.

Only partially. They didn't know about half the SCBW mechanics and techniques used today, most of them are just bugs; not once have they properly balanced a game, SCBW was balanced by custom maps and mechanics, War III still isn't, same goes for Diablo II, WoW (in a way) and so on.

Plus, not to forget an awful support for every single game with the exception of WoW.

YES BLIZZARD!!! BLIZZARD!!!

OMG this is such wonderful news! At the very least, my brother might have a job! Time to call I suppose! :D :D :D
