No brainer.

Sounds like good news to me.

This.

Anything that shifts progaming away from the current model of exploitation (which encourages players to throw games so that they actually make some kind of money) is a net positive!

If this stops SC1 being broadcasted, I will be pissed. Almost any other result is fine.

I really hope negotiations between Kespa and GOM work out so ProLeague and the Starleagues can continue. Excited for Tasteless' return though, since he was my first exposure to pro SC 18 months ago.

No they won't
KeSPA's got shit on Blizzard. BW is Blizzard's game so they can just not allow KeSPA to broadcast it.

It was theirs and theirs alone until they sold it to me, you, Kespa and half the world. I doubt they could come ten years down the road and say "btw when I sold that software to you I forgot to mention that you are not allowed to use it in this and that way". That would be pretty messed up.

If they have the right to do this then it is not because it is their game but rather because of a license agreement. What can be regulated in license agreements do vary from country to country and is not set in stone.

Best Case Scenario: Blizzard signs contracts, allows MBC to join in at a reasonable price, OGN is fine, KeSPA makes the needed transitions and remains a powerful force behind the OSL and MSL, everything returns to status quo but now GOM also has a tournament. Also there's SC2 if you're into that kind of stuff.

Worst Case: Everything flops, Blizzard can't get enough sponsors, no MSL or OSL, Starcraft dies, everybody loses.

Actually, when you buy software you buy just the license to use it. There are rules to that license, which Blizzard can of course enforce.

this will be good for english commentary on the pro SC1 games. It also secures a premium SC2 tourny provider.

Yes, but Blizzard never spelled it out in the terms of agreement for BW, that's why that can't do anything to it.

I'm along these lines.

I might still keep track and check in once and a while. But even now, I follow SC2 much much less than I do SC1.. because as a spectator, I feel it is simply not as fun to watch. With all this added drama before the game is even out... and it all being about money and not the community... I really just want to be participating to boycott the bullshit. Wish there was some petition (is there?) or something many people, foreign + korean, could take part in to deliver the message that we want a great community and culture just like SC1... and that this is a lot less likely to happen if things keep up (going down) at the current rate.

Anyone feel similar?

It's grey area. Courts rule against over reaching EULA's as often as they do for.

It's very unfortunate that Blizzard couldn't compromise with MBC and OGN, but I think GOM will step up to the challenge and deliver what we love (and what Blizzard loves i.e. money and complacency).

Heh. The question, to me, is why CJ (GomTV, OGN) did what they did. Did CJ sucker Blizzard? Or is CJ breaking ranks from Kespa? These two are the only possible explanations for what just occurred, if you discount the possibility that somehow GomTV was acting independently without CJ oversight.

Kespa's earlier statement was that all the companies represented by Kespa were united, and as of now I still think this is true. If CJ really wanted to usurp everyone else to grab a stranglehold on BW/SC2, I think they would have timed the announcement very differently - at this timing the other Kespa companies have some time (the rest of the proleague season) to figure out what to do in response to this move. To really go after the throat, the best time to publicize such a deal would be right before the season ended, so the other Kespa companies would have to scramble to react.

It's my belief instead that CJ conned Blizzard into a deal somehow, or maybe going through GomTV was a way for both sides to save face, if the deal is a good one for Blizzard. Since the translation implies that GomTV can sublicense the rights, it's easy for CJ to guarantee the rights for OGN as well. And if CJ was indeed united with the other companies within Kespa, licensing to MBC is no big deal either. This may have been a move to simply get a more "legal" backing to a system that might not be very different from how it looks today.
"If you try responding to those absurd posts every day, you become more damaged. So I pay no attention to them at all." Jung Myung Hoon (aka Fantasy), as translated by Kimoleon

Furthermore, the KeSPA office prevented progame teams or progamers from contacting Blizzard by threatening ‘disadvantages.’ Unlike the negative rumors you might have heard, Blizzard’s intention towards e-Sports is not to ‘dominate’ it and create excessive profits from it. From the beginning of the negotiations up to now, the basic framework we have thought of is one where e-Sports can continue to grow, while we can protect our intellectual property rights.

Battle.net 2.0

This is their framework. This is where e-Sports can continue to "Grow".

Have fun guys.

Oh boy.

On one hand, fuck Kespa.

On the other hand, I can't help but feel this won't turn out well for us.

Although I like to think optimistically, I semi agree with this. Just the threat of no PL/MSL/OSL is enough to strike fear in all of our hearts. Hopefully everything goes well, but I'm sure there will be casualties.
