Most APM is going to be the result of right clicking units too many times, not gosu micromanagement or anything.

Think of the rate at which you click to be the refresh rate of your brain. If you're not clicking mindlessly, the spam clicks are due to the player's actions being on hold due to need to scout or repositioning of army.

I typically see spam clicks from good players when they are extremely apprehensive and ready to react.

i.e: you're scouting with a worker, as soon as u see tech u need to reposition your army, throw down the right tech/production buildings/macro and keep up harass to delay the tech you are not prepared for.

There are periods of the game you can play at 70 apm, but I don't think you can be successful without the capability of maintaining 120 useful apm.

whoa copper players so fast

i'm still not quite sure how this translates from bw and stuff. bw i had 200~ apm, 100~ eapm (but eapm is going up at a consistent rate), while sc2 i have like 128~ apm. i doubt that my eapm is 64 though.. or is it?

I checked 330+ APM but it's probably closer to 20-30

LOL, copper league is at 330+ according to this poll. The rest of the league polls though seem to be pretty much spot on from what I've seen.

I'm in silver or was before reset, and average 50-60 APM, and of course I burst/peak higher at times.

I am Plat and have about 135ish APM and I know it is higher than that but I don't spam magic box early game like most players do so I average around 30-45 apm early game and put it towards adjusting workers in most efficient mineral patches. That causes my overall APM to be lower so i'd say for the majority of the game its around 150.

While there is definitely a use for 300+ apm in sc2, I think most players right now don't know what to do with that apm. 99% of people, even at the highest levels, are worried about executing their build, countering what they see, and determining when to attack and how to do it. In BW people made broad scale decisions because the game was refined to a point where you could go on autopilot and play with mindboggling speed. Even if someone has 300 apm right now it's probably going to waste. RIght now I'd be much more concerned with learning everything about the game rather than playing it faster.

Of course higher apm definitely is required to play at a higher level, but at the moment I think even 100 SC2 apm (whatever that actually corresponds to in real time) is enough to execute solid play.

Isn't the APM calculated by the "normal" speed? I'm pretty sure that's the case unless my APMs in SC2 suck compared to what they were in SC1.
Not Korean, and I definitely do not play like I am either.

Yea, apm is lowball compared to BW numbers, it's just calc'd diffirently now.

100 APM average seems fine. In spikes, you macro very quickly with APM that could be in the 200-300 range, ex:
1 - hotkey for queen
2 - hotkey for queen again to center view at base
3 - hotkey for larva
4 - click on hatchery
5 - hotkey for hatchery
6-11 - Make 5 hydras with your fresh larva
12 - hotkey for your army
13 - hotkey for your army again to center it
that's 13 actions, that could happen during a battle so if you get it done in like 3 seconds... thats like 240~apm, and that high of an APM just netted you faster macro for faster replacements to the hydras that youre going to lose in your current battle, in addition to losing less hydras on top of that because you're able to go back to microing your hydras and focus firing instead of a+clicking because you spent less time at base and more time on the field.

the other two scenarios are: don't macro/micro, lose hydras and have none to replace and a ton of larva and a ton of energy on your queen -- micro, lose less hydras but have no replacements in time, or macro slowly, and lose lots of hydras because of some dumb pathing you didn't notice since you were in your base or something.

this is all obvious for experienced players, but just spelling it out in case some novice reads this.

edit -- alternatively, when you're not in a battle, you only have so much macro to do because you have resources that limit production, so your macro here gets spend on army positioning and scouting, which usually is NOT going to take 240+ APM for long periods of time. imo, APM is all about very very short spikes, not consistently spamming 1234 control groups or right click to passively be at an inefficient 300 the entire game so that when someone insults your macro/micro after you post the replay you can fall back on "stfu i have 300 apm, post a replay i bet you have 100 apm." ~__~

edit2 -- that's not to say that in the mid/late game you could have a lot of things you need to do that will net you a high APM for more than just a few seconds. i'm just saying that i don't think you'll ever be at 350 apm for like 30 seconds and have anywhere close to even 75% efficiency.

I haven't played any leagues yet, only against the computer (practicing builds, getting to know the tech) and a few in the placement league, and I have around 60-70 with no spamming.

Honestly, I have NO idea how I rank skill-wise compared to other people yet, I'm kinda nervous haha. I only played some sc1, no iccup, (while watching a lot of pro games for the past 2 years) but mainly i've been a warcraft3 player.

i wonder how many copper leagues there are, if there are 64+ plat leagues...

i like how the top league has 6400 players X), in wc3 the entire ladder was only 1000.

I average around 200 in sc2 according to the in-game counter (and that's based on fast rather than faster right?), and yeah I spam at the beginning. I usually don't spam mid/lategame tho unless I do it without even thinking about it.
