Perhaps I am not black nor I have been raped...
Come on.
You don't have to be black, or a victim of rape, to find words like "nigger" or trivialising rape offensive.
I don't mind people using "faggot" if they understand gay people are still discriminated against.
-5x as many gay teenagers commit suicide than straight.
-I live in a state that's its legal to fire me just based off my sexual orientation.
-I can't have any legal rights that can't be overridden by their parents, regarding my partners health, property, money, rights, that would be part of a normal marriage.
-Gay bashings do happen, they are constantly being told they will burn in hell.
-I went to a high school where a transgen kid couldn't even use the mens room without being harassed and could only use the nurses office restroom. And I went to a nice well educated upper middle class high school.
-There's a lot places that I'm afraid to show the littlest affection towards my partner in public.
Gays/faggots are thrown around too much in gamer culture, I don't mind people that use that words as long as they support my rights and fight for my freedom when it comes time to vote.
yea people get offended when i say retard and a lot of stuff it's hard to please everyone I want to be like destiny but i dont want to turn away the masses its really hard to remove retard, rape fucking from my vocabulary and fuck too its really hard ;(
I have been a fan in the community for the past year or so. I love the content you produce. Please limit your association with people like 'Destiny'. His comments and arrogance about the use of those words were -not good-.
I appreciate the discussion you all had, but surely you can tell the difference between InControl doing a stereotype impersonation and someone using the 'N' word and then trying to defend it like 'Destiny' did.
I realize that everyone says what they have to say in order to create entertaining content.. but to justify it the way he did is pretty offensive.. Please don't have Destiny on anymore of your shows !!
Dear language police,
Please provide us with a list of words that are guaranteed to not offended any minority in the world. Once provided, we will immediately cease all use of such dialect until further notice.
Yeah, uh, no.
You're an adult, you should know the word you used would generate some flak, and now you're getting it.
I also agree with him, I don't want you on the show. I wanted to hear about starcraft, thats why I watched a starcraft related thing, not to hear you horribly try to defend one of your crazy view points like you've done on your stream nearly every time i've turned it on.
Destiny said on his stream once that Americans have the lowest self esteem because they can't joke about anything. And that you should be able to joke about anything whether is your dead mom or not. If you can't joke about it then you have issues.
Something to that extent. So this doesn't surprise me much. He's a character.

obviously practical measures are more important but to deny the impact of symbolic things like language is to fall into the lazy libertarian trap that gamers like Steven seem to apply to their online interactions.
Its weird how upset Americans can get over the word nigger. Here in the Netherlands it does not how this 'load'. Even though we perhaps we an even worse history with blacks due to slavery.
On May 30 2011 03:32 Steven.Bonnell.II wrote: So, what you're saying is that if I draw a swastika for any reason, I automatically support nazism? "ok"
The key is just understanding. You can have your swastika tattoo or carry a placard with the word nigger on it, but you have to understand that just because you don't want it to be offensive doesn't mean others wont take it to be. It might be completely irrational and illogical for people to be offended by words from any random person, but they can and do.
Now, you're not naive enough to actually think you're going to change everybody's mind on the subject who disagrees with you. So all you have to do is be prepared and understand that there might be ramifications for your word choice. You claim you accept that, then that's the end of that.

systemic bigotry against african americans was only dismantled 50ish years ago, there are still a large number of people alive today who were involved in that struggle. Of course it is a much bigger deal in American culture
It's all good. People gonna say what they wanna say. Some people get mad cause we eat cows, and other cultures consider them sacred. Some people don't like me cause I have a blue bandannas hanging from my jean pocket. some people don't like me for sayin BIOOOOTCH, or Bitch be trippin BALLZ!
The world is full of diverse people with different beliefs and morals. For us to try and enforce what a person can or can't saying goes against basic rights as a person.

Probably because everyone in the Netherlands is a on a level of chill comparable to Tyler. Rest of the world really should start adopting that attitude.
I liked todays show - escpecially for its controversary. Both (incontrol and destiny) positions are understandable and you can find reasons for each of them. For me the big thing isn`t the topic itself but the fact "we" talked about such things.
Regarding the topic: words are just words AND words are more than just words. It totally depends on your point of view and on what aspect of the discussion your focus lies. for example: the n-word was used years ago (and even today by some) to disrespectfully talk down on black people. But to be honest today all kinds of people (black, white, hispanic, asian) use it to talk to each other to make a cool impression (as weird as this may seem - it is a fact) and therefore the word got another meaning (in addition to the original one). The same applies for "gay". In earlier days it was used like the word "happy", but today everyone immediatly thinks of homosexual people.
What I am trying to say is this: Language evolves and you have to be aware of it. Often it isn`t even difficult to get what the person using these words wants to say, because the context is clear. As for the gaming scene I find "rape" has become so popular and by now is common knowledge. Everybody gets it that you overwhelmingly beat a guy when you say "I raped him". You cant unlearn what you have already learned.
Destiny just spoke for himself and till now he just streams his own games and if people are offended by his vocabulary they should just turn off. Incontrol is a caster for a major tournament and with 400k prizemoney this better becomes a finacial succes. We all know sponsors are really sensitive when it comes to "hot" topics like violence, nudity and so on. So it is wise to try to step on as few toes as possible and promote a really "clean" image. Though I`m not saying Incontrol is faking anything.

Anyone?
Destiny?
Surely using Destiny's logic, it's just a word describing something that happened ~70 years ago.
That's exactly what it is. A word. Not an act of murder.
And yes, I would be totally fine with that description. Now, looking at my country, you will probably draw the conclusion that I'm a dirty Nazi. But I'm not. I'm just some guy who thinks it's much more offensive to try and censor everything that appears to be only slightly politically incorrect, than to just speak your mind and say whatever the hell you want.
I can understand casters in a huge tournament avoiding words such as rape and the like, but this is someone's personal stream we're talking about. I just don't see the need to tread that carefully in this kind of setting. If you are offended by Destiny's use of language (which apparently is part of his personality, which he is showcasing on his stream), mute the sound or don't watch at all.

QFT, I think the suicide rated alone shows how unaccepted and looked down upon it still is in our culture.

I agrree, I don't mind this topic being covered, but it was basically the entire show when IMO alot of really interesting stuff is getting under way... hello, MLG is next weekend? NASL playoff spots are basically being earned, etc etc...
Either way it was entertaining, but it felt like a SOTG when everyone thinks what they think, and just keeps saying it again and again and again...

However, in other contexts, like casting for a tourney that's trying to be professional, of course it's not appropriate.
"Rape" should not be trivialized to mean beat in a video game. That said, sexist jokes have been made, can be made, and will be continued to be made. It's not a problem unique to the Starcraft community by any means.
So yeah, sexist jokes have their place in the SC society like any other society, but they should be kept out of places where were trying to be professional.
Very valid point... God it's so hard to please everyone but then again if you go to a comedy show, you're going to be shocked/laugh at jokes and to make good jokes, you need swear words or some of em :S:S:S:S:S

Omg yes! If everyone would just chill the fuck out I swear 90%+ of all problems in the world today would be pretty much nonexistent.

I don't want people who get offended by me using a word out of context watching my stream.
I'd love you to answer this Destiny, i have some sympathy to your viewpoint but i think it doesn't take account of the context in a lot of these cases.
IE why is it that amongst a community which is primarily young, straight males the reflex insult of choices is a homosexual slur?
Because it is on all of the internet, and RL too?
Widespread cultural homophobia is hardly an excuse for the SC2 community making the same mistakes. The more people learn that words like that can have negative repercussions and that it's better not to use them in that way the closer we'll get to eliminating these sorts of issues.
calling someone a fag isnt homophobia though. words always have and always will change meaning over time as they get used in different contexts. holding on to words like fag as homophobia just comes across as people looking to get pissed off so they can start drama.
you're blind or stupid if you don't think that young straight guys mean gay when they call someone a faggot at least 80% of the time. There's a reason a homosexual slur has supposedly morphed into a word that generally describes feminine/annoying/flamboyant behavior and it's not because of our societies mature acceptance of different sexualities.
i actually say gay when i mean gay. when i called someone a fag, it maeans they are annoying. id ask where that 80% statistic came from but i wouldnt want to be homophobic if it came out your ass ;/
