Hi guys, Blizzard has just announced the Starcraft 2 collector's edition. The price tag is set to $100 USD, and the standard edition is set to $60 USD.
- The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game - An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set - A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director's commentary, and more - The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks - StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series - A World of Warcraft mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account - Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit
Personally I would get it just for the art book, and the behind-the-scees DVD. And because I live in New Zealand, the retail price of a standard edition cost around $70 USD to $85 USD. So I would say, why not!

Well, I'm sold. +1 internets
Anyone want to buy a WoW pet?
ahaha mini thor pet. WoW freaks are gonna jizz in their pants.
Seems reasonable for all the stuff included. Blizzard art books are awesome.
Standard edition $60 is dubious. Obviously I will buy it, but PC games have always been £10 less than console games due to lack of console based licensing and this price (which hopefully does not turn into a trend) is annoying.
Just announced? I pre-booked my copy like 6 or 7 weeks ago

Well, the listing price here in Sweden is 429 SEK for the standard edition, which comes to almost exactly $60.
The collectors edition is listed at 999 SEK, which is closer to $139
Im ashamed to say this.... but the only thing i like about this is...
- Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit
Which I'm very ashamed of.
Preorder'd. I never bothered with a blizz collector's edition until Wrath, and when I did I wondered why I hadn't every time. I heard about this, went straight to Amazon and said "...mine!"
also, +1 on eBaying the pet, lol. All the non-WoW fans selling their pets are gonna dilute the market, methinks.
hopefully these wow thor pets sell well cause I'm not touching that shit
Why's the standard edition $60 instead of $50? The extra 10% markup for games is only typically found on consoles, is the Activision arm of Blizzard trying to bully us for another $10 a'la MW2 or something?
Maybe I'm being paranoid, but Activision turned MW2 into a monetary black hole for anyone that wanted to play it on the PC. I feel a strong wind blowing in the direction that the SC2 expansions will not "be priced as such" and Activision is going to milk us for all we are worth.
Someone please tell me I'm wrong :\
I'll buy it only for the exclusive bNet content. That seems reasonable for me
Unless the special portraits include a nude medic or banshee I don't care for it
Will probably pick up 2 or 3 extra copies and sell them in a year or so for a 200% mark up like I do with been doing with wow CEs

That's exactly what they're doing - milking us for all they can.
You would have thought that WOW (which although it costs $40 million a year to maintain, earned them $2 billion in four years) and the inevitable success of Starcraft 2 would let them leave developers alone *cough* IW *cough*.
100 dollars is roughly the price of 2 normal PC games, considering there are 2 (expansion/sequels) coming out.. man it really sucks when an awesome company like blizzard has Kotick calling the shots, also a WoW pet? really
also 60 for a PC game :/ enough people already don't buy PC games. Just sell it for 50 and get more buyers hooked who will later on get the "expansion/sequels". Personally I think games should be going in the opposite direction of increasing prices or adding $ DLC.
we found the one influence of activsion on blizzard--Modern Warfare 2 was $60, SC2 will be $60
fortunately other pc game devs aren't following that trend so far, but then their games aren't as good, either

Blizzard games and expansions have been about $10 over the standard PC price since about Diablo 2. Most people are happy to pay it because Blizzard has an impeccable brand name and their games always deliver good value.
I went for the Collectors Edition as well. While I'm not completely convinced on it's value, I can change my mind later if necessary.
I'm pretty sure Blizzard games have been $60 for quite a while now. I'm almost 100% positive WC3 had that same price.
- An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
haha, this is cute :~)
- Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit
I hope this doesn't mean there's going to be heaps of different skins and colours for units in game. PLEASE NO!
Especially the awesome game editior that comes with it, your essentially buying more than 1 game.
Well the pre-order in the UK is currently £29.99 on Amazon, which is average triple-A price for a PC title and what I was expecting to pay. That collector's edition is stellar by the looks of it, no word on where it can be pre-ordered in the UK yet though.

I can't seem to find it on UK amazon. I guess we'll be late to the party again.
I recall spending 60 for WC3 as well. That box is the sexiest box I've ever seen.

This is true. RRP In North America was $59.99 for Warcraft 3 back in 2002.
Man, when they finally bundle together SC2 and the two expansions into one mega-ultra battle-chest-collector's-limited-super-awesome-pack, it's going to cost well over $200.
(...) - The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks (...) This caught my eye, 14 tracks at release (ATM at beta we have like 6 tracks?), it's gonna be quite huge
I'm gonna get this btw
Usually I never bother with these limited edition things, but this actually sounds pretty cool. But yeah, doesn't seem to be available on the UK amazon yet. Hope this will be available to us too. :/
Awesome stuff! Instant buy for me, I have no qualms with the price
Art books are usally 30-40 bucks on there own and this one is pretty big.
And you get a ton of other stuff o.0
The 60 dollar thing is cute, bout time PC games caught up - I've been paying 60 bucks for all my console games for a few years now big deal -.-.
With stuff like a movie tickets costing almost 20 bucks a pop I find it hard to complain about sc2 being 60 common people!
Its certainly worth it
I'm definitely getting the collectors edition for the soundtrack and the special portrait, hehe. Although I probably won't use the portrait when I get something that I actually earn through achievements. =/ Special unit decals also sounds fun.
Hey man, Raynor here. I heard they be givin' flash drive replica of the dog tag, alright? Anyway, that 60 dollars for a pc game is a shame, alright?
Because I'm studying animation and I'd really like to see that DVD with the behind-the-scenes stuff I might actually buy this
hopefully they don't go overboard on special decals/skins and shit like some other games do

where in the US do you live paying $20 for a movie?!

Oh man by the way, why only special unit model for Terran?

OMFG this is such a great CE package and is really an incredible deal considering everything that's included! Wonder what Blizzard's profit margins on this are. o.O As longtime SC fanatic, this is a must buy!!

That may be true, but their largest source of revenue for WoW is from the subscription cost and not the lump sum when you buy the game.
Where in the US do you live paying $20 for a movie?!
Around 20$ Its 10-11 bucks plus tax per person at the theater at the mall here in VA o.0 Granted thats 9 bucks away... so I guess 15$ instead? lol Edit: I just checked again and apparently its only 11ish and not 14 like I thought Either way the point is its expensive as hell to go to the movies and god help you if you want food
Damn reading the info again Im kinda sad that I just bought the sc1 battle chest recently haha
hmm, it's gonna be released in the coming weeks?
bleh if the regular edition is gonna be $60, might as well just go for the $100 version. The resell value should be pretty good, too
im gonna get the collectors edition :O mostly for the exclusive b.net DL content ;o

Well, in my country PC games have always been 70$-80$ and console games 90$-100$
Recently the price of PC games have fallen to 60$-70$ (I don't know about consoles), but I hope they won't rise StarCraft's price to make it's price above others.
I'm still thinking 'bout buying CE or normal because the difference is not that much in my country 60-70$ normal and 100$ CE compared to your prices (50$ to 100$)
I'm in for five!
fucking awesome!! i hope i can get one. theres going to be crazy lines for this :[
$60 is still pretty steep for me but I guess it's a must have game. I bought Hl2 for $60 back in the day.
If I get the special edition, it'd just be for the soundtrack and artbook, but I honestly am unsure of how much I'll care about those items once I'm really into the game =S

Meh, nothing too outstanding to me in the collector's edition. I wish they included something cool like the neural interface thing
On April 09 2010 02:58 Jimmy Raynor wrote: Oh man by the way, why only special unit model for Terran?
Because this is the "terran" game. There will be "protoss" and "zerg" one being released not long after where you will see something like this i'd bet.
The stuff you get in the package seem really interesting. Shame I don't play WoW anymore... a thor pet would be amazing.
the USB drive is gonna be so nice, i just hope it doesnt become 100 GBP or just ... EDIT will there be 3 x collector's edition since of the expansions? will cost alot
RAGE! I already preordered....
you know guys some times games back in the day were even more expensive the $60. When I bought Super Mario RPG when it was first released it was $75. the original phantasy star games sold for $70.
and this was 80's-90's.
I really don't find anything f that usefull..only for the protraits i could take it.
will there be lurkers or muta stacking in the CE?
Does this mean that the thor is going to have a different look in multiplayer, depending on which version you have?
i bought a war3 battlechest less than a year ago and it was 40 dollars at gamestop (for vanilla and TFT), and this was like 7 years after release
In before theres a special edition of of each of the three games. Also, Id like the tag more if it weren't Raynor's. I don't like him much.
Nice! I'm totally down for grabbing this. Just need to decide where from... Does Amazon have a good track record for getting pre-orders out to you on launch day?

Well there's only been one WoW game and as an MMO, it's never a good idea to overcharge for the initial box as well as a subscription.
This CE looks pretty sweet actually. I might think about getting it :O
even the box is legendary
I might buy it because I need a new flash drive...my current one hold like >500mb
Sc2 supports decals for the units and a unique visual thor if you buy extended? Ugh, the units should look the same, I only would like it if it was a tiny decal that left the unit pretty much the same. Hope they don't totally alter the thor for collected people...
if they dont bust it up to 100€ here ill def get it

Thors looking different? That's worth the $100 to me.
I want it :D

no, they don't. if you want it on launch day, pre-order from a "real-life" store like gamestop. amazon only offers launch-day delivery on certain items (windows 7 was one) and it will be clearly stated on the product page if it's available

Release date will be announced "in the coming weeks", according to that press release from Blizzard. It's the last sentence before the "about Blizzard" thing: http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/press/pressreleases.html?100408

i smell collector's edition BS for all three sc2 games....each being 100$ and a final collector's edition being released a couple of years after like a battlechest and charging us even more money...
I'd get this but from what I know from friends that pre-order games it usually takes 2 days for the game to come to you. I'd much rather just buy it the day it comes out and now have to wait for mail.

If you don't mind, then $60 is the appropriate price.
The appropriate price is the price that makes the most money. People will spend $60 on a game, as proven by the PS3, 360, and select PC games such as Warcraft III. I don't know if they'd spend more than that for just a regular game.
$100 USD, and the standard edition is set to $60 USD.

question though, Preordering usually means that you won't get it ASAP (like 12 midnight the day it comes out) right? So will I be able to pick these up at Fry's or Gamestop or whatever?

The artbook alone is well worth the money.
Only way I'm going to buy this is is if I can still get the digital copy to play day one. Otherwise no sale.
Why does blizzard insist upon sucking all of my money out of my wallet every time they release a game. This is a love hate relationship.
Guys? There is no way in hell I'm not buying this. Sounds fucking epic.
Chances are they'll probably suck me in for another 60-80$ each on expansion set collectors. Sounds like my family will be spending nearly 500$ on SC2, assuming we have to get 3 copies of every game... (although only one of each collectors).
Looks fucking amazing. Jim Raynor Dog Tag USB = SC Battle Chest. Behind-the-scenes DVD. Art book. Not really sold on the DLC and definitely not using the thor pet because I don't play WoW. I had a pre-order of SC2 already for $40 so I'm still debating whether I wanna upgrade to Collector's Edition, but it is VERY enticing.
The USB dogtag is what sold it for me. Can't wait to get my hands on this, although I'm kinda reluctant to buy the Zerg/Protoss ones. That's gonna hurt my wallet.
... guess i "have" to buy it! the usb-dog tags is just awesome...

I usualy don't see the point in collectors editions, but this is Starcraft 2 and an awesome package. I think I might get this.
not looking forward to this in australia... we get totally ripped off with video games... even with the conversion being $1 AUD = $0.9 USD our prices are ridiculous...
the usual price for computer games over here are $100 ($90 US), with console games being $110 ($100 US)
the big fancy version of MW2 was $200 ($180 US)
currently ebgames has SC2 standard version for $100 AU, but it wouldnt surprise me if that changed....
i love blizzard, but when i can import the game from playasia for ~2/3 the price for buying it in aus... it's hard to see how i can justify buying it on launch day...
As long as you buy a legit copy of the game I don't think blizzard cares how you get it.
Says the original Starcraft will be preloaded on the usb. Is that with the beta key or just the game but you still have to get a cd key?
I'll be there at midnight to pick up my SCII CE. In Canada, Diablo II and Warcraft III were $74.99 for the regular editions at launch, and expansions were $49.99 at launch, and I paid that without a second thought. Blizzard games are in their own tier of quality, looking down at the puny competition with their mediocre-by-comparison games.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't put a USB Battle.net Account Authenticator into the CE. I really want one but it's always sold out.
Standard edition going for $60 makes me cringe a bit, so I'm more than willing to pony up the extra $40 for an item that should hopefully sell for around that.
Mmmmmm collectors editions....
Oh man, putting a wow pet with this game is brilliant, gonna pull in so many more sales on the wow pet alone.

Then you don't get it on date of release.
I'll be standing in line at midnight with all the other nerds, because it's worth it to me. I was just answering the question of why some one might prefer a digital download. Me personally, I like to have the physical media to set my drinks on, as well as the book and little flippy charts to read on the toilet.

yea, this is disgraceful. blizzard had to meld sc2, which could have been the gentleman's RTS of the 21st century, with all the other age of accounts mmorpg micro-transaction bullshit.

The shop I had SC2 pre-ordered at (since 2007!!) just called me as I was reading this thread and asked if I'd like to move my deposit over to a reserved copy of the collector's edition, now that's cool!
I accepted of course
WoW pet selling time!

If Blizzard wanted to milk us for money, we would be playing Starcraft 7 by now.
Come now people, you have odd standards for what counts as ripping people off.
Average Price for new PC games in Germany is 43.99€ which equals to 59$ So 60$ for a new PC game is standard in Germany since almost forever
SC2 however is set to be sold for 54€ which equals 72$
T_T
This is gonna be epic, a new pet, new books en the best game ever in one edition
the thors will sell on ebay for well over $40 eventually i bet, ofsetting the cost difference.
I generally get these things just to have the nice box and display it.
They updated with images of the pet, disks, artbook cover and I guess the alternate thor.

preorder the SC2: CE on gamestop.com with code ENT20 to bring the cost from $100 to $80. Coupon expires 4/10

T_T amazon.de has it for 59.99€. 1:1 dollar euro conversion. Now thats what I call a rip-off. Gonna buy the UK version anyways, since German interface and unit sounds always suck ass compared to the original.

Can someone explain this part? What are "decals" to customize my in-game units? Is it something like additional skins for units? And will the units change be visible to everyone who plays with me or just for me? Same question for the new visually unique Thor. I am confused...

If 10 dollars more is too much for you to pay. Then don't buy the game, the rest of us will enjoy it. I will pick up this collector's edition, because think of it this way. Even if the wow pet sells for a relatively low ebay price of 30 dollars, that brings the cost of the game down to 70 bucks, so in the end you'll pay 10 dollars more over standard for a bunch of extra items. I don't buy collector's editions unless I've been waiting a long time for a game, and suffice it say, I've been waiting for SC2 for half my life (literally since I was only 12 in 1998).
Edit: People can say all they want that 'breaking the game into three is milking us' but the fact of the matter is it is One game and two expansions. There is no chance at all that the two subsequent SC2 releases will be $60 dollars. $60 dollars is the standard price for video games these days, I will never for the life of me understand why people take every opportunity to complain about every product every company releases these days. Its too much money, its too long in development, and a myriad of other things, how about this - If you don't like the product boycott it..... It's an option widely available to everyone. Otherwise buy the game and play it.
$60 seems a bit up there....
wtf, I cant believe people are complaining about $60. In the early 90s I use to pay $80 for console games. A night out on the town can easily cost $60 if not much more. $60 for thousands of hours of entertainment sounds like a fucking great deal to me.
Collectors edition sounds pretty good too. I think I will get it.
$60 is going to be the new standard for games. It sucks, but with the budgets of games getting bigger and bigger I think it is reasonable.
You aren't just paying for game, but endless entertainment. Think about it. You spend 10 dollars a person on the low end to go out to a restaurant for 2 hours at most. You spend 10 dollars to go see a 2 hour movie. I bet Starcraft 2 is going to provide a lot more than 12 hours of entertainment (i.e. 2 hours per 10 dollars). I bet people have got there moneys worth of entertainment in this beta by far, without even paying a dime yet. Quit complaining. Blizzard is awesome and worth your money.

No. That's a 20% markup over $50.00. ($50 * 20% = $10)
Man, I remember the time when PC games were selling at around $70, then dropped to $40, then the prices crawled back up to $60... Prices aren't constant. Activision is just pricing according to the market.

I've got dozens of video game boxes sitting in my basement which I will never use. I think the earliest is Mantis. I don't care for the boxes or the manuals. I just want the game. IMO the box is just additional clutter.

Stop complaining. Australia cops price gouging the worst. For example, a game selling for $60 in USA will cost $110 in Australia even with an exchange rate of 0.92 USD to 1 AUD. It's like exchange rate doesn't even come into it.
is the CE going to be limited supply?

I'm sure there will be a digital download available on the Blizz Store, no reason for them not to do it.

The decal part has been known since the very first Battle.net presentation, and is a feature that everyone will be able to use, whether they bought the collector's edition or not; decals will mainly be gained through achievements, just like player portraits, and you'll be able to customize at will via your Battle.net profile. The collector's edition just adds a few "exclusive" ones that only people who bought it can use.
As for the decals themselves, take a look at these pictures:
![[image loading]](http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/images2/5/5a/Building_cannon_far.png)
![[image loading]](http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/images2/f/f2/Marauder.png) The little symbol in the middle of the photon cannon, and the symbol on the Marauder's shoulder-pads, are the decals in question. A symbol like this even now appears in some form or other on all units and buildings in the game. However, in the Beta currently, there's only symbol per race, and you can't change it. In the full game, however, you'll be able to choose from a bunch of decals, most unlocked via achievements, and picked the same way you pick your profile picture currently. Once you've picked a symbol, it will appear on all your units and buildings in-game in the same way as in the pictures above.
As you can see, it's not a particularly intrusive addition...but it does provide a pretty cool way to personalize your army and "stand out." And inevitably, certain decals will become associated with certain top players...which I think will make for a cool additional level of personality in the game. Imagine being able to see the Death's Head symbol in a pro-game, and immediately thinking "OMG! FLASH!" It's these kinds of little details that really add a lot to the game in my opinion.
Got it now?
I was all pumped when Gamestop left a message on my machine saying they had "Important information regarding my Starcraft 2 reservation"
But I thought it was going to be a release date, slightly disappointed...

- An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor's dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion set
could use a new flash drive and thats like 10-20 bucks proabbly more like 10 bucks cuz its most likely a shitty one lol but an extra copy of bw is always cool

wait wait, sc and bw on a flash drive? so i can play at school on the library?

game development costs are rising, gotta increase the price of games too WoW profits go towards salaries, maint., basically all throughout blizzard - you cant rely on that to also cover all the costs for SC2

i can see blizzard announcing the release date within 2 weeks probably announce it right after they release the next big patch with the map editor

Quick but important question.
How are you guys getting the Collectors edition?
Are you preordering them? When/where are you preordering them? Do you think they will sell out before the game ships?

but honestly, if you factor in the USB with SC on it it's pretty worth the price. The SC and BW expansion is usually priced around $20 USD so you're basically paying: $60 for SC2 + $20 for SC & BW + $20 for all the extra stuff.
Not a bad deal if you ask me. Although $100 is kinda pricey...and I'm just a poor college student T^T. Maybe if I can convince some WoW freak to buy that Thor pet off me for like 30 bucks or something :D

Aussie price for standard edition would be ~100, Collector edition ~ 150.

Holy shit, this delivers.
Gonna get it! (Even if it's $AU150)

I hope for Soviet Russia they will set different prices. 60$ for a PC game is unheard of in Eastern Europe. For reference, WC3 was around $10 in Russia.

Someone needs to tell Blizzard many of us don't play WoW. I know I don't want to get sucked in.

I must have bought at least 2 copies of Brood War and the Warcraft 3 Battle Chest. Spending 60 plus expansion packs for a game I will play for 100+ hours doesn't sound too bad to me.

Dang $150??? That's quite a bit of chump change ;-) Kinda disappointed with what you are getting for that but just like the hundreds of thousands of others that started SC from the day it came out and have loved every minute of both games it just has to be purchased ;-D
Anyway I'm hoping this means it will come out soon!

i like the customizable decals and icons.. but 40 dollars? hmmm it's tempting.. but i must refrain. i'll be really jealous when i see people wearing their unique avatars though.
my question is: do the custom decals show for other players too? or just for you? if it's the former, than that's pretty damn sweet

Time for revenger to those WOW players that put their beta key on Ebay. Thor pet for sale FTW!!! I am not sure atm though, maybe If my connection is good enough, I will just buy the US/EU version online to play on the US/EU server. But if they include Realm in the final product I will consider buy a boxed version of Chinese SC2 :D

I just found this and wanted to let everyone here know about this, but I not sure if this should be in its own thread. Gamestop is apparently having a special discount on the collector's edition going on right now.
On their website, type in coupon code "ENT20" to get it for $79.99 or type in "25OFF" and add a $0.99 item to get it for $75.73. ENT20 offer expires today, April 10, and the 25OFF coupon expires April 30.
After scanning through the thread on it, it seems that tax + "handling fees" bump it up close to $90. However ENT20 also works on all other games. Don't know if there will be better deals for it later, so up to you whether or not you want to take advantage of this!

You have to take into account tariffs and taxes that governments place on exports and imports. Although I agree it's unfair for us as Australian consumers to pay so much money for a game. Regardless of what our Australian dollar is worth, we are always going to have to pay extra on imports.

Does anyone know if Heart of the Swarm is going to have a Collector's edition w/ a different Zerg unit look? Cause I'm thinking it would be silly to get the collector's edition for Wings of Liberty, as I rarely play Terran and wouldn't even get to see the Thor as often.

My girlfriend is a video game artist so she loves looking at artwork and stuff, so the art book and comic might be interesting to read through with her. Other random goodies makes the CE appealing to me, and I have a steady job so its not an issue.
Plus with a 25% off code used on gamestop preordering, and selling the beta key that came with it, I'm getting the CE for under 40 bucks now lol
