Thanks to pzea469 to share some insides and possibilities in SC2 to get your own ideas down. Yesterday i found an easy and free way to mod on my own and want to share it. The modding is quite simple with the combination of DXTBmp an Photofiltre. Both are small freeware programs which can be found over google or whatever you prefer. After installing DXTBmp go to options and set Photfiltre as standart editor. From here on just load the *.dds file in DXTBmp and go to image->send to editor. Photofiltre pops up and you can edit from here. After saving the edited pic just go to image-> reload after edit and the new pic will pop up in DXTBmp. Just save it in the Textures folder with the given name (expample baracks.dds) and SC2 will load your textures!
to give you some ideas what the possibilities are: 5 minute work and not in highest quality, dont judge me
- Tanks in dirty sand design - Battlecruiser with grid, looks like carbon from far away - Thor without textures ( better?) - Marauder in black with symbol on his arm - marine shield symbol, sorry not visible
If you have questions how to handle the texture files then take a look at the OP.

the white creep kind of looks like a web texture. although it helps a lot with visibility i think i prefer the look of the old one. zerg buildings just don't have enough color it seems. the yellow on protoss buildings really helps them stand out, and although terran buildings are all grey they don't usually blend into the terrain. zerg, though, sits on creep that is almost the same color.. the orange in sc1 made them stand out a lot more.

Alright, after playing with zerg all night i was forced to stop. Zerg is by far the hardest one to do. Why? well because the race is already done pretty well..... Now you guys might be saying, NO thats not true, you cant tell which building is on your team and stuff. But all that really comes down to team color and how much of it is present with zerg. Extractors for example have almost no team color. So i'm trying to fix that but i have no control over how much team color is present. So then i lower saturation to make team color stand out more, but then zerg become all colorless which people don't like. So its a stress-fest. I have concluded that theres not much i can do about team color presence so yeah....
However, there are some things that i feel i might have improved on and so i wanted to at least show you guys these few things.
Original:
These are the Original Hydras, Roaches, Infestors
Modified:
In this pic everything is modified from when i was experimenting. But anyways, check out the infestor. Don't you think that the modified infestor looks cooler and more interesting? More poisonous looking perhaps? The original one is just brown. idk i guess its a matter of opinion but anyways i thought I'd post that. Also i like the modified hydras better just because the original ones seemed too bright, but maybe thats just me.
Also check this one out
Original:
Modified:
which ovie do you guys think looks better?
thats pretty much it i think, aside from the creep i made that gives you a bit better quality(if you zoom in in-game its totally noticeable.) i might keep working on that a bit, or maybe take some requests, idk.

The OV looks good, infestor is pretty decent too (original was fine), the hydras are too dark (the black lines on their heads are way too thick, it breaks up their outline and makes them hard to see in a mass). Also, roaches are way too dark, I mean they are JET black, it doesn't fit with racial colors and it looks mechanical.

Some friendly criticism for Zerg:
The main thing I'd personally like to see would be an increase in contrast between the darkest and lightest colors. I think you could do this without sacrificing unit detail by keeping the 'core', the majority, of the unit's texture as a lighter tone. Then increase the darkness of little lines and crevice details while lightening the mounds and bump details on that to create an illusion of depth. Simultaneously you could slightly brighten (not too much, just slight) team colors.
Like what you did with the Overlord. That overlord is pretty darn close to what I mean, maybe exactly what I mean. Good job, I like it!
|
Make the other units more like that Overlord. I think you are making 'too much' of the units extremely dark. I think reserve the darkness for the fine details/crevices and the lightness for highlights. That said too extreme of contrast (example: Roach) would probably look bad too, so maybe a blending between the light and dark portions. Basically I'm describing shading. I think you nailed the "shading" on that Ovie.

Does this mean that there will soon be a solution to the team-colorless-ness of sc2? Also, will you be posted the updated zerg textures?

Extractor Before:
Extractor After:
just wanted to show people what i'm up to. I could probably still add more team color to the extractor. Guys give me suggestions to units and or buildings that need this type of fix bad!
|
please make a little guide on how to do this on your own!
|
ooh im loving the team color change on the extractor. Keep it up!

OBSERVERS
completely indistinguishable between teams >.<

Amazing. The team color stood out more on the extractor. I guess it would be best if you just scrap the darker textures since it doesn't appeal everyone anyway and just make brand new ones that aims on making team colors stand out more. I think more people would love you if you do that.

Darker Zerg V2 Released!!! sort of..... READ UPDATED OP
|
how do you extract the original .dds?
|
so is zerg v2 included in pzea's Darker Textures Pack V1? i still think it would be better if this project combined all races into a pack always.
|
If you're going to keep working with adding strength to the player colors I suggest you make a new thread about it. Seems like a lot of people looked at your original work and decided to ignore this thread.
If you can get player colors to be more vibrant it definitely deserves a ton of attention!

No it's not in the v1 pack as I want ppls responses on whether there's enough or not enough team color for Zerg. it's too much trouble putting it into a pack if a better version is comming soon.
