"Look at the food differentials, look at how high Dimaga is."
Wasn't paying attention and couldn't help but laugh, sounded to me like you were saying Dimaga's high for eating more food than Painuser.

I thought to myself, "No way that's Sean Plott, he's a diamond leaguer." I look at the profile and there's only 17 ladder games on it. "No way in hell have I played nearly as many ladder games as Day[9]." Then I look at the match history and see a ton of obs matches, and when I looked at the obs matches the players were names like qxc and getorp... So look out day! I'm only 5 ladder positions and ~150 points behind you! ETA: Arrlaari is my backup nick when numerals are forbidden, as in SC2.

Anyways, how is Day[9] going to do a whole week of casting for tournaments if the beta is ending the 19th? The second phase of the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta test is now underway. We're delighted to invite you back to the battlefield and hope that you will join us through July 19 for more terran, protoss, and zerg action.

Well if you think about it there's very few ways this can happen. 1. The games are replays. Most likely option. 2. He is the thoughthammer, and his word is law. Blizzard are forced to keep the beta open. 3. Day[9] hacked the game and he has unlimited LAN and funions for everyone!!

At daily 156 (Dimaga vs Painuser) you didn't like the idea of getting broodlords because it costs a lot of money to get them. However, Dimaga already had spire up (unused for whole game though) which could have been easily morphed into greater spire. His upgrades also were for ranged ground units. Wouldn't it really be better to just get greater spire and not build ultralisk cavern at all, especially with defensive style of play? I feel ultralisks are more offensive I-attack-at-more-places-than-one units because melee range makes them less effective at straight-up battles and defense but they are fast and can demolish bases quickly. Broodlords on the other hand are obviously very good at big battles and they are good siege unit. I especially like them more on left-right divided metalopolis, because there are in fact only 2 big battle fronts (top and bottom) and they can kinda cover both of them at the same time. They are also supply efficient.

Day[9] dropped the following conclusion in #156: A timing attack is just to attack at a specific point and that's all. (e.g. when a upgrade is about to finish) May I misunderstood the term timing attack or just don't get the context of day[9]'s statement. But, people speaking about timing attacks usually not only mean a go at a specific point, but also refer to the hole build order used to reach this point optimally. I mean these dedicated, highly optimized BOs specially invented to counter a single (players) strategy. Therefore it's devaluing to reduce a timing attack to a simple move that can be used in every single game. It literally means that even I could execute a timing attack like that: "Oh i have these two tanks and 8 helians... wherever they come from... lets just wait until the /blue flames/ are researched and then a-move to the not yet scouted enemy". To wrap it up: To say that a timing attack means to move out at point x, is like to argue that starcraft is just a game. All IMHO of course. What do you think? P.S. Since this is my first post here I want to point out that I enjoy TL. Thanks to all users contributing.

timing attack means when u make a certain bo or opening specifically just to build up for an attack that is supposed to happen at a certain time and work against this and that. for example lets say u open fe then start ur ebay and then get +1 upgrade and attack when u have ur +1 done, thats a timing attack but lets say u play a normal game and ur opponent comes in with these mutas, and u have some thors there and lets say u just somehow manages to kill like every muta and then attacks because u can basically just run over him. thats not a timing attack, thats just a way to take advantage of a situation so its basically just an attack ^^ u can say, this gives him a timing window to attack, but u cant say ok now hes gonna timing attack because his buildup was not meant to say ok he gotta die with all his mutas and thats how my strategy works. timing attacks is only something u can reach by alot of practice and preparation, not something that u improvise i really get annoyed when ppl just watch like a guy make a huge blunder with some units and then other unit just attack and they say its a brilliant timing push because its so wrong imo :p

But SC2 is quite far of beeing refined so throughly, so yeah, a timing attack is just a "good time to attack". When your first Banshee finishes. When blue flames finish. When Stim is done. When Storm finishes etc. because then it's most likely to make the biggest impact on the fight / adds the power of surprise to your attack.

This shows that I'm not totally wrong. I posted about, because a lot of people who are not so familiar with the game consume the d9d's. And they may adapt the simpler definition what would be somewhat disappointing.P.S. congrats for winning go4sc2 on wednesday On July 17 2010 04:03 pilsken wrote Ofc you can refine the definition of timing attack [...] You have plenty of these examples in SCBW. [...] I understand your thoughts, and I guess that day9 look at it the same way, but I slightly disagree. There are already a few 'timing attacks' in SC2, like the four gate push, or the fast concussive shells play. Well, I have to admit that these are may more rushes than timing attacks, but even then, they are close in concept. With the game evolving, we will see all sorts of timing attacks. But, the meaning of the term should not change according to the game state. Thanks for your opinions.

I was barely scrabbling out of Bronze at the end of phase 1 now im pushing for a place in Plat on the EU servers. Scary thing is I have been playing a lot more of the other two races as well now which I wasnt before so its not like ive been dedicating all my time to my main race. I was just wondering what specific casts you are referring to (I'm also a Protoss player, but in the Silver league)? I haven't had the chance to watch too many of them, but was checking out "White-ra Part 3: PvZ Getting Creative with 2 Gate Opening" and noticed a lot of little things that he was mentioning that I had no idea about. Things like being able to rally a Gateway to a unit. And in my play I was also building my Gateway wall at the top of my ramp which now seems to be looked down upon if you can instead do it at the larger choke of your expansion if it is possible (I've always been worried about zerglings breaking through to get to my minerals). What I'm trying to get at is, since there are so many Day[9] Dailies to choose from, could you guys recommend the best ones to start from that you've found most helpful, in particular Protoss because that is my main race but really all of the races since I like to play them all? I struggle with basic things like when I select a group of Zealots and hit 'A' and select a unit (in a group of units) to attack, I'd expect all of my zealots to just start attacking everything along the way but what I find is that they just run around the whole group trying to get to the guy I clicked on and in the process get shredded. So now I just try to click on an individual area (and not unit) and go that way but I know there has to be a better way of doing it. So trying to find Dailies to start with that would help me with basic things that many here might take for granted would be very helpful and much appreciated. Of course preference is Protoss but I'd like to know these things for the other races as well. Thanks!!

I was just watching your game against Socke on LT from the Day[9] Daily #153. Really like your play am planning to copy it in some of my own TvP. Quick question: I notice you didn't get an engineering bay in that game even though you had I think 7 barracks at the end and no factory. Can you comment on this decision ? It would feel natural to me to try to sneak in a little +1 upgrade before making a decisive push in the same way as you described in your post on this thread about timing attacks. Thank you !

A real timing attack, to me, is when you scout your enemy going X tech and you build to push with strength right before he is ready. He is right that SC2 is young so these things aren't well-defined. But still, a true timing attack does exist in theory and in some cases, already in practice.

Do you recommend the use of a clock (or chronometer) while playing SC2, as suggested by a recent TL article ? [SC2B] Under the Microscope: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=135462 I made a tread about it and I am surprised so few people do. I do not use a chronometer yet, but I am thinking of starting to do so. It would help, as I am not only using one build so I cannot really base myself on food instead of time. I can only rely on my sense of timing. Here is my tread about it: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=136956 If you choose to answer my question I'll be really happy ! PS: I am a platinum level player and I know that I will never be a pro gamer, so it's ok if this isn't legal in KeSpA matches. DarthLeader

Thank you ! well as day9 also says, try to trim down ur bos and plays as simple as possible. if i get an economical lead like that and then i can use it to add a ton of marauders which are really all-round unit awesome in the early midgame i can just walk over him. been doing this tons of games through the beta it im literally winning over 95% of my games where i just get a lead then mass rauder and attack at a nice timing. there is no need to sneak in an upgrade if i know i got something that will win, if we were lets say cross position and he did immortal instead of colosus and i wasnt ahead so much then yes something like this would probably not work and i could choose to tech to upgrades and ravens and all that good stuff and prepare for a macrogame. its pretty much all about finding a weakness in ur opponents current position and take it to ur advantage and make a decision how u want to use the advantage whether its a timing attack or get even more ahead in econ or go harass or tech up, its ur choose. but i really felt like this is gonna work so i just go do it and it most of times goes exactly as planned when i enter these situations
