From comments on Blizzard post:
Cloaken @Goblinoid: There are no requirements. However, you can only make, or be in, a single clan at any given time. The names are first-come-first-serve so you'll definitely want to be ready to reserve whatever name you're looking for when the content goes live at launch.
And about reserving clan names:
Kaivax @HungShark: We're on it. More coming soon on that.

There is no point in having a clan with like 300 people Well that's all well and good, but clans should be deciding that not Blizzard. If it's a functional issue, then cap it. But make it a considerably higher cap. I'd think at bare minimum 150. Sure 90% are probably going to be 50 or less. But 50 is much too low because it is Blizzard that is doing the capping more often than clan leaders are capping.

50 peOple in a Starcraft clan?! That's huge, why would you guys complain if a 50 max people limit, it's not like the pros ever have more than 20 people per team why would you?

haha its funny cause people where like "omg blizz no clans yet" (blizzard makes clans) "omg blizz its taken long enough" some people are never happy
|
they should have done that before...
and now let's say nobody from ROOT would log on as soon as the feature comes out, someone could "steal" the team name from us? (or any know team for that matter)

LOL at the conversation going in the Psy Raiders chat window.

Anyone have any idea if there will be some sort of organized function for clan battles? I'm excited for HotS either way, but something like than and/or automated tournaments a la WC3 would get me playing more games than anything else.

Hey Rockers, I just wanted to post a brief update here to let you know that the beta environment will be coming down tomorrow around 10:00 AM PDT for a major update. We anticipate the downtime to be around 8 hours. There will be a 3.38 GB download for this patch as a result of the significant changes being made to the beta build, so be prepared. If you're looking for information on some of the features being implemented in tomorrow's patch please take a look at some of our recent blog posts regarding UI changes, Leveling, and Clans. More extensive patch notes will be provided in the 'morrow. Thanks for all the great help you've provided in testing Swarm and giving us your feedback. We are excited about where we're headed and look forward to hearing your thoughts on these new features. Talk to you soon!

Just a quick note that the numbers currently associated with the beta are not necessarily final (i.e. 50 people in a clan). However, as others are mentioning, it's quite possible you will find that groups will support the kind of needs you are looking for. We will obviously be talking in greater detail about those in the future.

About time...? This should have been in the game at launch and we are FINALLY getting it.
|
Finally ... this removes the need to have your "clan" (team) name in your actual name and makes a lot of name changes for pros unnecessary.

Why are so many people commenting on the 50 player limit? I sincerely doubt anyone even knows 50 people personally who play SC2..... and it's not like any pro teams have that many people. Why would you want to pack a clan with 50+ clowns that you don't even know when you could get 10-15 that are your friends? I don't understand. Someone drop some knowledge on me here.

Some people need to overwhelm chatrooms with their clan tag. "Hey, we dont know eachother, but we have the same tag, peace, bro'!"
Some people like to be part of a swarm.
I don't, but it's not that hard to understand.

Don't understand the "50 debate". I hoped a clan because i wanted to have link with players to train and have fun together during month and maybe become friends. But if you are 150 (or even 50) it's really difficult to have a clan solidarity/mentality, and you don't know 70% of the clan...

Yes but some people like to be in a 750 members clan. What do blizzard need to put a limit ?

I'm sure, or at least I'm hoping, that Blizzard has some sort of contigency plan for this, especially when the brand of a team such as ROOT's benefits e-sports, thus Blizzard, on the whole. We'll see though....

more then 2 years later... whats the story....

very good , now we just need custom games with names on a list like wc3 & maybe lan :D! Definately positive news though )

There is nothing wrong with the idea, it just wouldn't work due to the amount of hours they will need to put into monitoring so people doesn't upload: penis pictures, swastika etc
