Isn't the whole lack of consistency due to the fact that there are a lot of different people voting, that some of these are swapped from year to year, and that they just tend to vote in whichever fashion they deem most reasonable? So you'll have some who think 'well the world cup is the most important' and some who think 'overall best player matters most' and some who think 'most trophies' and some who have world cup as #1 trait and most trophies as second most important and some who have world cup as #1 and 'overall best player' as #2. Consequently you'll see different elements valued the most in different years.

Ronaldo won one in a season his team didn’t actually win anything, but he was individually incredible. If you use the same criteria for this recent award, it wouldn’t be Messi. But if the criteria is ‘who grabbed the World Cup by the balls?’ I mean it’s him. The problem is shifting the criteria continuously, just pick one and stick with it. Cannavaro had an incredible World Cup and won it, he wasn’t out of this world amazing that year at club level. Wesley Sneijder takes Inter to a treble, the Dutch to a World Cup final and doesn’t win it. Modric wins it by taking Croatia to the World Cup final but with a less impressive club season. Decide what the award is meant to actually be, and run with it. Is it the best footballer, or is it the footballer who achieved the most as part of a unit while providing clutch moments at critical times? Until these bodies can actually decide, complaining about inconsistency in an inherently inconsistent award seems redundant to me. I mean, this award is well defined: it's who do footballers think is the best player in the world. Voters are other football players, and that's that. It's a very subjective award and deserves 0 attention. So stop giving it attention ![]()

Plus I mean he’s no Xavi style technician but damn is Henderson a good leader of men, so having such a character in a dysfunctional setup not exactly lacking in innate talent seems a good fit. As someone who was incredibly disappointed in Henderson for moving to Saudi in the first place, like to see it.

He probably didn't have much choice if he really wanted to leave Saudi Arabia as soon as possible. Apparently Juventus was also interested but only for a loan and Henderson's club did not want that. I agree that Henderson seems like a very good fit for current Ajax.

Plus he signed for small money. Everyone is bailing on Saudi already it seems. Saudi i think might bail as well as they already have the world cup now.

Thing is these guys were already earning such figures that it’s not life-changing due to diminishing returns, and the negatives of such a move remain just as negative Offer a poor person, or even merely earning decent money multiple times their salary, yeah that’s a much different proposition as that can make a big difference in their lives

I really don’t begrudge any of them bar Henderson. Wouldn’t be my call if I was in their position, but it was only he who made principled stances on social issues only for him to go to a place with a terrible record on said same issues

I just hate the hypocrites who pretend like they're actually doing something to help other people. Like, no, you went there to take the money. Stop lying. It's the same with the LIV golfers who jumped ship and pretend like they're "growing the game." No, you went to make a boat load of money. I respect the guys who went to take the money and admit as much (Harold Varner III, Abraham Ancer, DJ). Also how does the Japanese national team always end up doing something like this? Favorites in the Asia Cup, lose to Iraq. Severe underdogs in WC, beat Spain and Germany. They need to be perpetual underdogs to win.

Japan's team is far too good to be losing to Iraq.
