Even 2-3 years ago, Calvin wasn't worth his contract on the field. It's like QB and TE are the only two positions that are worth a max. QB because they're indispensable and hard to find, and TE because they're even more artificially capped than other positions. I guess NFL teams have a lot more power to shake off bad contracts/make bad deals.

I know the shelf life of an NFL player is the shortest, but it seems like the only sport where paying a player in the prime of their career is a bad thing. I guess NFL teams have a lot more power to shake off bad contracts/make bad deals. NBA is simple: Max contacts mean Lebron, etc can't get paid what they are worth. If you look at David Lee, Joe Johnson, etc you see that you can't build a competitive team in the NBA paying players "what they are worth". In MLB they have no cap, so you can win paying players what they are worth, but even for the Dodgers and Yankees this is now prohibitively expensive, so having great players on rookie deals is necessary to be good.

Then there are positions like rb where teams should really want only players on rookie contracts or veterans' minimums.

As we discussed above they are the only position in the league that gives you 20+ million in value a year. Even if you only think he is going to be Dalton/Matt Ryan its probably worth it. The issue is if you don't think you have a comparative advantage in drafting QBs over drafting Defense then your strategy is correct because a lot of QBs don't perform that well on their rookie deals. I agree. I just don't think that Goff is a guy that the Niners brass is going to love that much.
