HOCKEY'S BACK!!! And that means, MORE TL FANTASY HOCKEY!! Welcome to the 9TH!! season. Here's to another great season.

New to Liquid Hockey and interested in joining?

What is fantasy sports?
You draft good players from different teams and you manage them. Simple enough? Well it probably isn't so I will explain a little more in depth.
YEAH! One of my players got a lot of points!
Different players play on different days. If a player gets a hat trick on Tuesday but you left him on the bench on that day. I would call you an idiot. Why? You wouldn't get the stats for that player!
So what do I do?
Everyday the players who are playing need to NOT be on the bench. There are 2 Center, 2 Left Wings, 2 Right Wings, 4 Defensemen, and 2 Goalie positions. Those positions MUST be filled by the respective category. A C Pos must be filled by a player of yours who actually plays center. There are 2 utility spots. These are much easier because they can be filled by anyone except goalies. So say you have 4 centermen playing one night. Dang it, you only have 2 center spots available each night. AHHH 2 utility spots are available! 2 centers playing in the 2 C Pos and 2 centers playing in the 2 utility spots.
Note: Sometimes you will have very few players playing one day and nearly your whole team playing another. This happens. You will have to muster up your amazing manager skills to decide who gets benched and who gets to play. (Sometimes you might make the wrong call and a benched player has an awesome night.)
The draft is tentatively scheduled for MONDAY, October 5th @ 19:30 EST. The season begins October 8th.

Does anyone else find this format to be really boring? It just feels like it doesn't matter until the final two weeks, and then depending on how lucky you get over those two weeks, you win or lose. Other than setting my line up for the week, I rarely even look at the pool.

Eh, it's fair. I tried making trades earlier but no one accepted or replied so I stopped. I'm 4th and I get a chance to get into the top 3 if I do great this week, versus not having any chance at all, but I can't actually pass 1st. The last time I was vs 1st it ended 8-2 as well, so the only reason I'm still in this is from being very solid the last while. Plus a lot of picking up from FA.

iunno, i think you really could've screwed yourself over if you didn't pay attention 100% of the time, I've lost a couple of points because I played the wrong person and missed getting 2 hits or something, those points would've helped a lot right now. 1st place was wayyyy ahead at some point but everyone else clawed back, even 5th place has a chance if 5th 10-0s and me and #3 tanks hard. It's more fair.

Wow, I thought 6 teams made it into playoffs, not 4. I would have actually done something over the past few months if I'd realised. This format is just so boring.

6 out of 8 teams is a bit much...It would've helped if we had more sign ups. Suggestions on making it more exciting for next year?
In any event, first round of the championship is all rematches.

Yeah, I forgot that there are only 8 people this year instead of 10. Personally, I'd prefer a points or even a rotisserie pool. I just don't like how you can have an amazing team and be doing the best all year, but then all that matters in the end is how you do in the final two weeks. Just makes so it's way too luck-based.

It's not like the actual playoffs at all though. When you're playing in the playoffs, everybody tries their hardest, they play through injuries, etc. In this, it's just a week of regular season games that for some reason decide who wins the pool, and there are a TON of factors that make it enormously luck-based:
- How many games your players happen to have in that final week
- Which teams your players play in the final week
- Every injury is now hugely magnified
- One player getting a misconduct will often make you win or lose the PIM category
- If a team's a lock for their position, the players will generally not try as hard or even be given the game off
- If a couple of players just happen to have a couple of off games, you now lose the pool, regardless of how well you did for the rest of the season
Like, I get that people want to emulate the playoffs, but it makes zero practical sense. A pool should be about how well you draft and what players you pick up/trade. Not about if you have good or bad luck in a week of regular season games.

I really enjoy rotisserie leagues and would be willing to switch it to that next season and hopefully we'll be able to hit 10.
Re: your point against the 2 round playoff. That's an issue not just for the playoffs but the entire head to head match-up, if that's the case. A person can have the 2nd best week in the league but just because he went against the best team, he may end up losing 8-2 when he would have crushed anyone else.

That's true, which is why I prefer pools that aren't head to head. But the larger the sample size, the less luck becomes a factor. Anything can happen in any given week. But over the course of 24 weeks, things will balance out much more.
That being said, I don't think there's much of a case for head to head being a good format for a serious pool. It feels more like a just for fun thing where people like the concept of being able to match up against their friends each week and beat them. But since people just don't pay much attention to that here, I don't see the appeal of it.

Yeah I don't think I will continue if it keeps being a head to head format. I didn't pay much attention to it all year long. Just did my line each weeks and subbed when I had injuries.
And still, I got first. But there is a huge chance I go down in the first round. What I don't like about this format is that we put money on the line, you build the best team possible and even if you dominate you still can hit a bad week, And if that bad week is in the playoff too bad you're out.
If the interest is there, we should look into another format for next year

To be fair, the top 5-6 did fluctuate quite a bit throughout the season. You just had the perfect storm in me having a really shitty week and dropping from 2 to 4 so don't get too cocky ; ]
I love and prefer roto; I actually thought it wouldn't go over too well here. Plus, tradition from way back when jkilla started it. It adds so much more strategy, especially at the end, when you're trying to bump yourself up a few positions per categories. Plus, we can consider having game limits per position though that's something I've only done for fantasy baseball so I don't know how well it translates to hockey.

I'm not a fan of game limits per position because it ruins the point of trying to super stack on one category to make up a deficiency.
I'm okay with the heads-up format because I've been crawling back from 5th place for the last month which gave me a chance to beat #1 who I've been doing great against all season. 4-6 right now but today's still young.. I probably won't win but I got a fighting chance after leaping onto Hammond and I got rewarded fairly..

I don't think there's a need for game limits, but there should be a limit on moves.

I was supposed to have his goalies but he took Rask making me take Rinne. Jerk. Dubynsk saved my season though. What a beast he's been on Minnesota.
Like I said, I've only done roto for baseball (so we capped innings pitched [IP], for example), so I'll take a backseat to those who have done this for hockey.
Yeah Blisse; both were on tie breakers which I think goes first to head to head in the regular season than higher seed. Better than it used to be: whoever had more goals.

Holy crap both my goalies got shutouts today and I got 10 goals O_O one more week to play I think, but jeez I'm playing a lot better than I thought I was going to... this is going to come down to the wire...

Nah, it's over. Last week in real sports aren't typically used in fantasy sports given the various strategies teams use to rest and/or tank. Will send out everything when i get home from work tonight.

honestly i got super lucky this week otherwise i would've lost, hammond/bishop/halak all played out of their minds (all three >= .950 sv%) and price misplayed just one* game, while foligno's hattrick saved me because steen and tarasenko were injured the whole week. otherwise i would've lost the goalie and goal points. good game guys :p
