I understand the concern, no one wants to see kids getting hurt(Especially parents) but it's a contact sport, learning at a young age how to proper take/avoid a check as well as how to hit properly and cleanly is an extremely important part of the game to teach young kids.
I know this is slightly off topic from the main point but it's just something that irks me.

I hope the IIHF throws a 1000 games at Nick Ritchie for what he did in the Canada Czech game tonight. The head shot hit is bad enough but at the end of the game he punched a player in the back of the head. It was 100% retaliation because the guy he punched was the guy who threw the hit on Ekblad last game.

Schneider and Luongo top 5 goalies. Carey Price faced almost 7000 shots.

Pretty sure it went down like that since we won.
Well, he was with Gretzky (and Yzerman) putting those gold teams together. Possible trend....I know I'm reaching...

Being completely realistic how many countries could really field more than one competitive hockey team in the Olympics? The US, Canada and maybe Russia and thats about it

Only Canada can field a double team. Russia is a shadow of a shadow now, each new Olympics they fade further and further back. Canada is head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of developing talent, then its Sweden-America then Finland then Russia and then the Czechs and the Slovaks. The end of communism basically broke the heavy sports investment that made Russia and Czechoslovakia powerhouses. The only reason they stay in the top 7 is because no one else really takes hockey seriously. If the Germans were as serious about hockey as they are about soccer they'd be a top 5 team, and surpass Russia within 10 years.

I disagree. I think Russian development of hockey players is as good as its ever been. Politics and that kind of shit is what has been killing them. Rather than just putting together the best line up and putting the best coaches behind the bench, Russia is sitting guys so some KHL players can get top line minutes where they shouldn't. Their coaches also adhere to a very strict rotation of lines that keeps their best players on the bench to often.

Considering what we send to the spangler and World Championships, meh. They might be competitive but the idea of grabbing a few medals is deceptive. Doesn't matter if it's Canada, USA or Russia.

I see it differently, although agree that the ham fisted over promotion of the KHL is hurting too. But more importantly with the collapse of the Soviet system a lot of youth teams and programs in the boonies simply collapsed. We are no longer seeing the same level of youth engagement, so for all intents and purposes they shrank their talent pool significantly. Furthermore, the people who are in charge of the Russian hockey are all hold overs from the Soviet system. And that was fine 30 years ago when coaching was more or less a journeyman type experience in the West as well as the East but in today's world we are seeing higher professionalization, higher emphasis on skill training vs just 'playing' the game and so forth. North America is pulling ahead while Russia isnt just standing still in the way it prepares its coaches and trains its youth but falling back because of a thinner pool of kids who have access. Thats why, for example, there are no genuine NHL caliber young Russian d-men or goalies anymore. We will still see forward talent and so people will always have this fantasy of Russia as a glass cannon but the reality is that even that is going to happen less and less often. Finally, the fact that Russian hockey keeps winning world cups lets the people in charge of Russian hockey tell Putin that all is a-ok and no systematic changes are going to happen. I will guarantee that barring some kind of major disaster -- Russia will not medal in the Olympics for the next 8 years.

Yeah I agree, I think Russian development has totally stagnated outside of forwards,
There are hardly any dmen anymore. http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/nationality/active-russian-nhl-defensemen-career-stats.html The only genuinely good young one is Voynov. Outside of that, it's meh. Goalies are pretty slim too. Top Cop's legit. I'd want another year out of Varly before I think of him as being a good goalie vs another flash in the pan like Anderson. Khudobin might turn into something, but that's literally all that's out there now.
It just seems like there's a whole lot more potential NHLers that just stick in the KHL now.

Ted Kennedy was actually born in 1925, and played for Toronto from 42-57. Canada got its first official flag in 1945, but it had been in use since the 1800s. 3 years of play before we officially had a flag.

its a joke guy.. also, ur facts are wrong.
the leafs already have 6 separate physical shrines to honour players.... this is #7. soon they'll have more of these shrines honouring former greats than the will Cup wins.
in fact, the # of separate physical shrines was so bad that their current top dog Tim Lewieke wanted one of them removed. Funny that .. rather than removing 1 of the 6... he ends up adding #7.
i type this as i walk into the Loblaw's at Carlton and Church and look up at a picture of Ted Kennedy. wtf? LOL

Canadian Flag Canadian Red Ensign was from the 1890s to 1945.. the "Red Ensign" looks nothing like the 1965 Flag. Also, law was not passed until 1965 for the current flag. So, legally it was the union jack until then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Canada
watch the old black and white leafs from before 1965 .. there was not a single modern canadian flag any where ever. the Canadian Red Ensign and the Union Jack are all over teh arena.
Ted Kennedy played zero games with the Leafs when Canada had its current flag.
Purpose Of Leaf's Legends Row
the Leafs are trying to create a buzz for who the "next guy on the bench" of Legend's Row will be. Is it Syl Apps? Dave Keon? Conn Smythe?
Bon Jovi has a banner in the ACC and Dave Keon doesn't? r u kidding me?
Will the Leafs thoroughly fuck up how they treat their alumni for the 100th time? we'll see soon enough.
