Still, if Montreal wanted long term and Subban wanted long term getting to these dollar figures shouldn't have taken so long. Unless I miss read Subban wanting long term weeks ago. Just seems odd that there was a 3million+ gap in salary talks between the two a few days ago to a contact 500k over the players asking price

Outside of the post lock out year where it dropped due to the settlement it has gone up every year. I have no idea why you'd expect something different esp w the new Rodgers deal

Salaries are inflated as is. That trend won't continue for long especially when you have half a dozen teams getting ready to fold. It's not self-sustaining.

The cap is tied to league revenue, which has gone up every single year since the cap era began. There aren't half a dozen teams ready to fold. It's been proven time and time again that there is always tricky accounting in play by the owners claiming poverty. See: Melnyk claiming the team doesn't make money despite owning the arena and offering dirt cheap tickets.

long story short, yes, there is every reason to expect the cap to continue to rise each year as it has.

League Revenue is bullshit and there are a few other things in play. Pittsburgh are lucky Crosby and Malkin came in the fold when they did. There are still several teams seeing the red and if I were an owner I wouldn't be drinking the Kool Aid Mr. Bettman has them drinking in growing the game. If I were an owner of a profitable team like the Rangers, Habs or Leafs I wouldn't be so eager to share my profits. At the end of the day only the strong survive and the product becomes that much formidable. As for your ghastly prices for Sens tickets and the like. Why you think I can take so many trips to places like Florida and get nice seats, food and drink for next to nothing? I have a very hard time seeing how some of these teams make money with what they're charging. Eventually that bubble is going to burst. We've already seen enough close calls. People wonder why a place like Ottawa cannot house a CFL team. Well, I got a long list as to why certain business endeavors don't work and good luck trying to make money on sporting franchises with the way some of them run. It's just ludicrous. The business of breaking even or losing money unless you have an established market.

Perhaps we should just host every game outside at a baseball/football stadium, no? ;o

Would you guys be annoyed if any team decided to tank for McDavid next season?

I think the teams need to find some other way to appeal to the audiences, a lot of people show up for soccer games now. Hockey needs a boost like the world cup did for MLS.

Soccer is accessible and what do you know? More people register for soccer than other sports in Canada. They already have world championships and all that jazz. Take it for what it is. Subban's charity has helped over 5,000 kids get more involved and in reality stuff like that is all you can really ask for. We see more noise coming from Cali and people playing it there. Hard sell when you don't have Winter. I don't think you can ask for a bigger boost than having all those gimmick outdoor games, which bring in the monies.

The Winter Olympics does that for hockey, and it happens the same year as the World Cup.

So now that Subban is signed and most teams are pretty much set for the season we are going to have a long layoff between anything relevant happening. I hate August...
