I don't like it when people directly compare contracts as if timing and term don't matter. "Larry Robinson made like 50 dollars and worked on the docks in like nineteen-fucking-zero so eff this Subban guy lol." Sure, he may not be the best defenseman in the league, but you can guarantee if any of the guys above him were to sign today with the Rogers money on the horizon, they'd be getting paid. Like 9-10M paid.

I can't fucking believe that Montreal actually let this get to arbitration. There's zero benefit for them. He is either getting a one or two year deal, so he's either going again the following season, or getting 2 and going UFA. Then his price will skyrocket even higher. Their chances of getting a favorable non-arbitration deal just got worse after dragging him through the mud all day.

This really is one of the most baffling decisions in hockey in some time.

This was probably Montreal's last chance to lock up Subban long term before he becomes UFA and the Rogers money is on the table, inflating contracts by some 20%. Like Hawk said, it's absolutely baffling. In two years, assuming it's a two-year deal, he will cost the Canadiens so much damned money. Holy shit. This is insane. I thought the whole point of his bridge deal was to be all "ok, let's make sure you're good then we'll pay you" but instead it's "ok, turns out you're really good but we still aren't going to pay you."

Just trade him to my team and call it a fucking day, god.

I would be shocked if the arb number is under $7m. He's clearly the best skater on the team, won a Norris, and is a legit top flight dman who constantly drives possesion and puts up good numbers. Virtually all of the top flight dmen are in the 7+ range

e: I am thinking 7.5 too. That's close to right in the middle. 8.5 per still would be entirely worth it. you're getting a top dman at a price that will be a bargain for the latter half of the deal.

He's worth 8.5 for sure. I will not argue that. I just think that the arbitrator will award somewhere in between the two numbers offered by both teams. 6m to 6.5m being my betting money guess.

8-8.5M is fair for his RFA years if were assuming that the cap is going up to the speculated ~80M next season (which seems to be the case as shown by the Toews/Kane signings)

imo hes worth 7.5 (RFA year) + 7.5 (RFA year) + 9.5-10M x6 (UFA years) = 8 years ~9.2M AAV

you have to compare his numbers with other players according to how much % of the cap hes gonna take up, Weber got 7.5M as an RFA 4 years ago and he didnt have a Norris to his name

Erik Karlsson makes 6.5million right now, and as an offensive defenseman like Subban that also has a Norris trophy I doubt the arbitrator could award much more than that. 6.5m 2 years ago was a much larger percentage of the cap though so I guess its really up in the air.

It's an overall average of 9 million, I don't think it is exactly 9 million every year. Most likely very back end heavy with him making 8 Million the first few years and closer to 10-11 at the end of the contract or something along those lines. Either way I'm just happy we have him locked up for 8 years and don't have t odeal with this shit. With the salary continually going up by the 5th-6th year 9 million for him will be considered a steal imo.
