Leafs got Gardiner, 5yr/20m. Pretty good deal.
Also, Subban's arbitration numbers came out. He's only asking $8.5. The Habs submitted... 5.25. lol. 8.5 is low if it's long term. He's got two years RFA left, so they'd be buying those. 8-8.5 in just 4-5 years is going to be undervalued for a top dman. Montreal is fucking retarded. They don't deserve Subban. I hope he leaves them.

I'm betting Montreal wants to sign him for 7.5 -8 million. Subban will most likely end up with what he wants though at 8.5.

I'm so hype for this. Sharks might not disappoint me like they do all the time this year /sarcasm

Are there any amazing/great defensemen on hella bad defensive teams? My perspective is all fucked with Leafs never having good defense.

Weber on Nashville is the first that comes to mind.

Karlson, Hedman, Kronwall, Shattenkirk when he was in Colorado, Erhoff when he was at the Sabers

That's a good one. Would Bogosian count? I've always like him. John Carlson?
edit: Actually screw that. Neither of those guys are all that shit-tastic-great.

But its always hard to tell how great a defender is on a shit team, if you think about the hours Sutter is logging in the Wild it looks like he was as important to the Preds as Webber is even though prior to the move everyone just assumed he was carried by Webber.

Weber 7.8 Suter 7.5 Letang 7.2 Campbell 7.1 Doughty 7 Phaneuf 7 Chara 6.9 Karlsson 6.5 Pietrangelo 6.5
Subban is crazy for demanding 8.5M. He might be better than Letang, Campbell and maybe Phaneuf, but they are way overpaid, and live on prior accomplishments to some extent. All the other players on that list are without a doubt better players than Subban. Subban's strength is his creativity, and he might be better than some of them in that category, but he's far worse in the other categories.
I guess that's what happens when you win the price as the best defenseman in the league, which was a big joke btw. Subban is barely a top 10 defenseman. 7M per year seems reasonable, and anything above 7.5 is just not worth it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 8M though. Subban is definately not worth 8M, even when comparing him with forwards. Getzlaf and Giroux makes a bit over 8M, and they're pretty much as good as they come (centers). I'd take either of those at 8.2M anytime over Subban at 7.5M.
But salaries seems to get more and more inflated, so it's hard to tell nowadays what a reasonable salary is. It's just sad that the defensive skills of a defenseman seems to have no value whatsoever.

if hes gonna get 8.5 for the next 8 years Im pretty sure he will be underpaid in years 5-6-7-8 because the cap is always rising (until the next lockout).
I think this guy will be worth every penny mtl will pay him unless he gets injured.
He will also get better with time, hes still young.
And you saying that defensive skill has no value whatsoever is kinda overboard...

Kevin_Sorbo reminded me of something, how long till the next lockout bros? 4 years?

Hedman, Campbell and Phaneuf are better than Subban...? What?

Well in 2 years if he goes UFA someone will throw those 8.5 at him, probably more.
I think mtl should and will pay the guy.
