I was in Diamond league back in 2012, stopped playing for awhile while my kids were young & busy with work, and after getting a new computer I decided to download SC2 again and now I'm hooked again. I did a placement match and got cheesed to death and was so out of practice, I ended up in Silver for now lol but am learning quick and can stop most cheese again now.
Anyway-- my question is this. I used to keep my buildings on the right, and units on the left. In the past, I macro'd with 0 - Nexuses, 9 - GatewaYS, 8 Robo, 7 Stargate, 6 Upgrades -- and 1 - Sentries-Zealots/Archons/Immortals/Observer 2- Stalkers 3- Spellcasters, 4 - Flank, 5-Misc. However, I've noticed that the keys on the left are much faster to hit and it's probably hurting my macro.
So, I came up with this for my new control group, What do you guys think about this setup? Having my nexus and a builder probe always ctrl grouped on the left has helped my macro already, but I'm still getting used to new keys. I try to keep everything I commonly use ont he left side now.
I don't know if I should keep Sentry with Spellcasters or not-- one time I tried it on the ladder, and I was fumbling around trying to get guardian shield & force field & psi storm with hitting tab and I'm thinking if I put it with my main army I can just hit guardian shield and micro them behind the army manually. What do you guys think?
F1 Nexus, F2 Gateways, F3 Production (robo, stargate), F4 Upgrades
1 Scout/Harass/Active Micro 2 Main Army 3 Stalkers 4 Spellcasters 5 Dedicated builder probe 6 Scout Observer 7 - 0 Second armies / MISC

Personal preference, if you notice something is holding you back, tweak it. I’ve made a lot over the years!
I am also a player who has units to the left and production to the right, and did some rebinding Q - Scout probe/observer/oracle or some kind of reconnaissance. If the game gets weird and comps get weird I’ll swap it out to have another army group. 1 - Main Army 2 - Another group, sometimes overlaps with 1. For example I’d hotkey my stalkers here even if they’re in my main army group so I could swap and forward blink quicker than tabbing 3 - Specialists, often Templar, could be another unit like 4 - Robo 5 - Gateways. I hotkey them specifically so I can double tap 5 and chrono them without using a camera hotkey. I also usually stick a Stargate here to save hotkeys 6 - Nexus 6-E for probes is pretty darn ergonomic 7 - Forges so I can double tap and chrono them easily 8 - Warp prism, although I’ve rebound that to a bunch of different keys over the years so it’s not really on 8.
F1-F4 I use for bases in that order
I remapped space to be a camera hotkey. I found this more useful for Zerg or Terran as I used it for the furthest advanced creep tumours/rally point respectively. For Toss I’ll use it for different things. If I’m relying on a proxy pylon it’s that, or I might use it for the choke in my main to swap to that quickly and try to block a runby or whatever
If your setup works for you it works for you. That said, I don’t think you need camera hotkeys hovering over production, at least not the main 4, and you probably don’t need a dedicated worker hotkey either.
You free up hotkeys by just double-tapping to clusters of buildings and using the F keys to just grab the optimal worker to build something rather than having one set aside
