There are a lot of question marks in both the front seven and the secondary. The D line is pretty banged up. None of our starters from last year even played in the first preseason game because of injuries that they're nursing. Word is that most of them (other than Dorsey who tore his biceps) should be good to go come week 1, but one wonders. I think that the news guys are going to have to step up and fill in some holes. Dial and Carradine have looked very good so far, so the D line may be better than thought. The linebacking corps is a different matter. Bowman will be out most of the season. Aldon Smith is probably going to be suspended several games. The rookie and backup linebackers looked VERY green against the Ravens. They'll probably get better, but I'm not expecting the Niners D to shut down the middle of the field like they have in previous seasons. Lastly, there's the secondary, which could be a big problem. While the safeties are very good, the corners are suspect. With the injuries up front, I wouldn't expect the pass rush to be as good, which means that the corners are more likely to get exposed.
Long story short, I do not expect the Niners to win games with defense like they have before. Their offense is going to have to be much better. Fortunately, I think it will be given how loaded the Niners receiving corps is now and how good Carlos Hyde is looking. My only worry about offense is how thin the O-line is starting to look with various injuries and the Boone holdout. They seemed quite middle of the pack in FFB last year, but who knows how much of that is randomness due to defensive touchdowns etc. that the Chiefs rode to the first slot. Yeah, they underperformed last year relative to how good they actually were. Still, my point is that they are not going to be as good this year, so people should be cautious about picking them.

Unrelated, who do you think are the top NFC and AFC candidates for the Super Bowl?
I chose the Carolina Panthers vs the New England Patriots

I chose the Carolina Panthers vs the New England Patriots New England is a good bet from the AFC. You're smoking something if you think that the Panthers are going to be contenders this year. Have you seen what happened to their roster this summer? They are in salary cap hell. They lost tons of depth.

I must have played too much Madden 25, still have that roster in my head. Cam Newton is screwed this year.

Cam is going to have to throw to himself this year.

eagles vs broncos.
eagles win.

Giants vs Patriots again.
Eli always takes a 2-3 year break between remembering he has to win a Super Bowl.

I want to say Niners v. Patriots, but it's more likely to be Seahawks v. Patriots.

edit: also, would it be better to pick up K/DEF on draft day or just get players and pick up K/DEF after draft day but before game day? I can't think of much reason to pick 2 of either although I've seen it occasionally. I suppose in leagues with lots of teams you might consider it.
It's certainly the safer play to just pick K/DEF on draft day. What you're hoping for with your strat is that your player picked then does enough in preseason to justify a roster spot and then has some value for you during the season. Meanwhile you could be -5points a week or something due to your weaker K/DEF. And there's a fair chance the player you pick up would have been available through free agency anyway. It's a strat that improves with a small league (and I suppose a long time until first matchup so that you have time to evaluate the player) but it's not one I'd recommend.

I can't imagine a league with settings that would induce me to select more than 1 of either K or Def on draft day. It would have to be some ridiculously unorthodox scoring beyond what's reasonable for that to happen.
In fact, I'd go on to say that there is a higher likelihood of me selecting 0 K or 0 Def than have more than 1 of either.

I know it's always safe to pick the Pats, but why not Denver and Seattle again? Seattle should still be neigh unbeatable at home, which makes them a shoe in, and Denver seems to have improved a bit with the addition of Clady (sort of), Ware and I think Von Miller (didn't he blow out his knee?). Losing DRC hurts but they got that Ward guy from Cleveland. I could easily see them winning 13 games, getting the one seed, and forcing New England to beat them in the thin air.
I'm personally never going to bet against Belichick and Brady, but we have to start thinking the magic is going to run out eventually, right?

Additionally, I think that the Patriots may be uniquely built to frustrate the Broncos' offense. Doesn't really matter though. I tend to think that either the Seahawks or Niners will flatten whichever AFC makes the Super Bowl. The disparity between the two conferences is pretty big.

I like the Eagles, Packers and Saints to go deep in the NFC this year.
AFC is pretty open, every contender has big questions at important spots on their roster. Denver, Cincinnati, New England and San Diego are probably the biggest players.
I'll take New Orleans over San Diego in the big one.

As much as it pains me to say, I do not see San Diego trumping the Broncos or the Patriots come playoff time (especially the Patriots who we NEVER beat).

The Patriots have consistently fucked up their cornerback situation for around 10 years running already. It looks good on paper but it feels like something can and will go wrong (injuries, underperformance, playcalling, freak shit). They still have a reputation based on their multiple Super Bowl runs but it feels like Peyton Manning actually has their number since their last Super Bowl win.

Saints, who dat nation! They be cookin' up a storm.

Cowboys are like the Panthers, except Jerry Jones isn't going to fire himself. I have to admit I'm not quite sure how far into the future their cap is hilariously fucked.

None of those teams can touch the West right now in the NFC. The Niners and Seahawks are more complete than any of those teams.

to be fair, it wasn't gettleman's fault that the panthers are fucked in regards to the salary cap. i'm sure jerry richardson will give him ample time to rectify the situation. the cowboys on the other hands... lol. they will never win another super bowl again as long as jerry jones remains in charge.
