Has anyone seen The Last Witch Hunter? Rotten Tomatoes gives it terrible reviews, but I also know it's D&D inspired through Vin Diesel, which makes me want to see it.

Also, Rose Leslie.

I'd want to say it wouldn't be offensive period, but I'm not sure and I do find it a bit dumb (I don't know the "recent" history of its usage in the US/English language, but here if you use nègre most people will first be surprised that you use such an out of fashion word, then maybe they'll find it offensive (I'm not sure whether it's because of the perceived meaning of the word, or because it's perceived as deliberately using an obsolete term to drill a point across)).

There's an extra level of tiptoeing around racism towards black people because of slavery in the US.

As for school stories, there was a programming class I took in highschool(largely basic and visual basic) and I finished the entire semester's work in 2 weeks and then sat on the internet for the rest of the time. Meanwhile people had trouble finishing half of the work in total.

I had a roommate take an "Introduction to Computers" course for the science credit and easy A. He regretted that decision the entire semester.

Imagine a college course designed for people with tech-savvy on the level of a grandmother who still thinks television is miraculous. They would have "labs" where you'd create a folder on the desktop, move the folder, rename the folder, and delete the folder. That was the "lab", but you had to document the whole thing in excruciating detail. My roommate later recounted that he'd never worked so hard for an easy A in his life.

Meanwhile I was giving my CompSCI professors heart attacks because after completing my lab assignment the right way in 5 minutes I did it again the wrong way because we technically hadn't covered loops.

that sounds terrible. I took a basic computer class at the college but fortunately it wasn't that bad. we did some stuff with folders and stuff but it was all in class and most of the class was focused on stuff you could do in office.

Do people seriously have issues with programming? It's seriously the easiest shit and you can learn 90% of what they teach you in school from Google. The are only a few things that I took from college courses that I couldn't look up again on Stack Overflow or w3school.

scrolled faster and faster as i tried to catch up cause the convo got worse and worse.

you probably shouldn't use words that you know that lots of people find offensive unless your an asshole. you probably shouldnt shit your panties when someone does unless your an asshole. you don't owe oppressed/discriminated against people shit but if your not an asshole you should probably sympathize a little. tossing racial slurs around like memes makes you look as edgy as an infinity scarf wearing jeff in a dalas starbucks

I took AP Comp Sci in high school and did incredibly poorly, but that was largely because I just didn't try that hard or really study at all. At this point in my life, I really wish I had focused more on that class.

@Req - some people struggle to make logical connections necessary for programming

some people are bad at syntax and languages so programming is hard

it's the same way that some people have terrible rhythm, are tone deaf while others can have perfect pitch and can easily ply in alternating 6/5 4/5 time (yeah that's a thing)

or in my case, just suck at singing

yeah my main problem with programming was just trying to keep everything consistent and avoid typos.

It also depends on what you actually learn in comp sci.
For example, when doing my undergrad (I think that's it, basically 2 years to be a technician; becoming an engineer takes 3 more years), most people expected to sit behind a computer and do nothing but code most of the day, and it sat fine by them. They were (unpleasantly) surprised to learn that most of the first semester, both in terms of hours and grade coefficients, would be about learning how to design stuff before you start coding it. And the idea that creating software is actually a lot of sitting with the client then designing templates and architectures and stuff, then doing all the testing, with a bit of coding in-between.

That's actually what I find interesting in CS (even when I'm coding, it's basically resolving a puzzle and the satisfaction of seeing stuff working once you're done), so I wasn't bothered at all, but there's also a whole methodology if you're going to be more than a code monkey that you won't find on stack overflow. Same with designing the data structures (DB and all) to go with your software.

I'm seeing funny and I don't know if it's the lack of sleep, the tiredness from doing fitness/cardio earlier, having finally switched glasses today, or all of the above. I added tea not to fall asleep on my chair too.
It's probably a bad idea to try and climb up in LoL now. Which means I'm going to play a game or two either way 'cause end of season is looming near (is that even English?) and I'd rather try to reach Plat before the final rush with everyone, their smurfs, and their friends playing on their accounts trying to get borders. I've got some time today.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

Short answer: Yes, programming (especially good programming) is hard, unintuitive for most, and difficult to teach. If it was easy you and I would be earning minimum wage.

Long answer: Story time.

Freshman year a friend of mine who was also a CS major called me up for some help. I was effectively a year ahead of him due to AP courses and such so we weren't in the same classes, so I saw no issue giving him a little help.

His homework assignment was to take X/Y inputs from a couple of fields on a webpage and draw a rectangle when a button was pressed, and he was having trouble. After a minute or so I realized the problem was that he didn't understand parameters.

I spent 4 hours teaching him what the hell a parameter was.

He simply could not make the connection that the values he was retrieving from the inputs could be saved to variables and/or passed into a function. He kept hard coding numbers into his function for drawing the rectangle.

I tried everything. Explaining the concept failed. Demonstrating the concept failed. Walking him through the solution failed. Metaphors, analogies, examples, and anything else I could think of failed. I don't even remember what eventually did the trick I was too busy being grateful it was over. He simply needed a mental bulldozer to break through one of the simplest and most basic aspects of programming.

Why was someone like that a CS major? He liked computers so he thought it might be nice.

Basically any 101 course for programming is primarily made up of people who like computers and don't realize that programming is way, way different from browsing the web. You also have people like Gahlo who vastly outskill the course and people who will actually learn a lot from it and do well, but most introductory courses are filled with people who think programmers smash their keyboards for a few minutes and then play video games all day.

It's probably easier for those "left-brained" folk :3

But really, the way people process information and make decisions with that information varies. Some people find it natural to spot logical inconsistencies and get pleasure when the logic of a complicated system or equation all adds up.
It is vanity to love what passes quickly and not to look ahead where eternal joy abides. Tiberius77 | Mordek #1881 "I took a mint!"

A proper Developer job posting should look like this:

  • Knows theory of how to design a functional program from start to end
  • Able to talk to a team without sounding like a self-centered prick or moron (or both)
  • Knows programming to a point where they can parse posts and articles to get relevant syntax to match their semantics
  • Can put together a database without creating a pile of garbage
  • Can tell customers exactly what they want to hear without making promises they can't keep (the bullshit clause)
