NV happened to turn out well because Bethesda's biggest development flaw is Obsidian's greatest strength. So NV ends up being a game with mediocre gameplay but story/characters/world compelling enough to draw you into the game and play it through. Fallout 3 lacks that and is therefore just a game with mediocre gameplay and no good story elements to fall back on.

Imagine for me, if you will: Two individuals, of different backgrounds but similar convictions, with the desire is to make the world a better place. Their talents may lie in different fields - the arcane, perhaps, or the subtlety of a concealed blade - but they are united in their cause. Together, they decide to venture out from humble beginnings into a world more vast and terrifying than they can imagine, with only one another and their weapons to separate them from what is trying to kill them. They travel across the land side by side. Through forests, over seas, into the very depths of the world itself, to seek out corruption and evil where it lies and snuff it out before it can threaten those that they love and hold dear. A shield against the dark. A blade against the wicked. A helping hand for those in need. That could be us. Don't hate, just join.

It's really quite impressive, but also a little disheartening how many man-hours have been spent making mediocre/poor games into decent ones, rather than making good ones into great ones.

They all think I'm barking mad because 3 was more "dark" and "real to the Fallout theme". Hogwash. Walking around the desert with a peashooter is a post apocalyptic paradise. A lot of people I talk to that liked Fallout all say NV is a better game. Odd your friends feel otherwise.

I want to thank everyone who conspired on this and especially LT who had the misfortune of having to deal with me, which is hazardous to mental health and not recommended I'll ceremoniously open it tonight on stream

In general, a lot of the Bioware and Bethesda titles that are derided by hardcore CRPG communities receive praise by many of their fans for these intangibles (e.g. the "atmosphere" or how "interesting the world feels"). While detractors will be able to expound on many, many instances of downright bad writing, or dissect elements of how the story does not make an ounce of sense, it's this "atmosphere" that people always seem to come back to that gives them an attachment to this world they're exploring. On the one thing, it has to be said that Bethesda is *good* at making these intangibles work. It is something they should be praised for, and something that other developers should learn from. On the other hand, it's lamentable how little the other things actually matter to most people despite the fact that they ostensibly should affect how people view the game. The glaring flaws in the dialogue just get completely ignored because the average player is just glossing the dialogue for basic meaning, rather than actually reading the dialogue and thinking about whether what's being said is in any way consistent with the character or the context.

I disagree partially with this sentiment. At least they spent the effort to make their games highly moddable. That requires a lot of effort by itself and deserves praises.

No, I just hate giving people bad news and having them be disappointed in me. I want to make everyone happy but this new job is just the right move. How is your finger?
