it's funny the argument I'm going for is that having kids requires a bit of an altruistic mindset in that providing for someone else and raising them is almost a 'higher calling.' It forces many people into a different mindset than only thinking about themselves (of course this is not true for everyone).
I had a professor in grad school who believed the complete opposite and there is scientific evidence that he is right---having kids is extremely selfish from a genetics point of view.

I'm pretty lazy about series names, but everything is pretty good.
Demon Cycle (Painted Man, Desert Spear, etc.) is pretty dark-- basically mankind has been almost wiped out by demons and hide in a few villages and fortified towns but are basically dying out. A few religious overtones.
Lies of Locke Lamora is great. Characters are hilarious and witty, think Artemis Fowl for adults x10. The third book just came out, and things are getting pretty real.
Abhorsen is amazing. Read it in middle school, still think its one of the best series ever
Night Angel... a bit similar to the Lies of Lamora, a little implausible at times but I loved it overall.

All Miyazaki/Ghibli films are worth a fair shake. I grew up on My Neighbor Totoro so it holds a special place in my heart, but I really liked Spirited Away and Mononoke as well.
There's a lot of other good stand-alone anime films out there as well, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal for instance is a fucking work of art that you don't need to see Samurai X/Kenshin to appreciate.

If you value your kids that highly, and are willing to go through all the shit that goes with it for that happiness, how is that not just as hedonistic as some guy who's willing to do the same for his drug of choice? (this applies to anything, not just vices.)
If there's one things humans are good at, it's making themselves happy, even if it makes them miserable.

Here comes probably the segway into a very bad conversation:
Marijuana is considered an illegal drug. But what makes this drug illegal and not something like cigarettes? Cigarettes are harmful to both yourself and the society and have little to no benefits known to mankind. Marijuana has many medicinal uses and is less harmful as well as not addicting. In fact, what makes it worse than something like caffeine, a highly addicting drug that plagues many people over the age of 22.
Drugs are good.
