Alright before we start the round of 64 a quick recap of the results in the group stage

As expected almost every first seed player won their group, only 2 upset for first place with Nerchio and Puma finishing behind TY and Soulkey. The seeding law stay true for second place finish although 6 players in 4th seed (including 3 wild cards player) managed to qualify for the round of 64.

Korea already dominate the standing with 51 players, but it's a 3 way tied between Canada, US and Sweden for the best foreign nation with 2 players each.

As for race distribution we have 20 Terrans, 21 zerg and 23 protoss, so balance is still almost perfect, but toss as a small lead, lets see if they can't keep it up.

I'm looking forward to Leenock vs Jjakji round 2: GoAT Boogaloo. Finally vengeance for Leenock!
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Very curious about Soulkey/GuMiho.
If you have commentary/complain about the presentation format, feel free to say it.
Also expect some update to be late in the next couples of weeks, a bit busy atm, but when I come back to a more regular schedule I'm probably gonna do 3 update a weeks since most round of 64 match are kinda on sided.

the synopsis for Solar was so spot on, he always killed my fantasy proleague lol, I'm not sure how he was consistently so much worse in proleague than in individual tournaments

I think these set of matches will be one-sided by I voted against the grain by going for Boxer. My justification is that he contributions to SC2 was more than just his tournament accomplishments. He co-founded the Slayers team house which helped find MMA. He brought so much hype for the early SC2 and I think can be seen as a pillar in the early days.

VOTE BOXER!!!

Agreed 100%. Without Boxer, there is also the question of whether SC2 would even exist. He brought so much face and name value to BW, undoubtedly attracted a lot of sponsors and gave success to BW, which in turn stimulated the development of SC2.

It was both funny and sad watching the Samsung crew that kept seeding him as ace, baffle at his mediocrity during that 2014 proleague.

Soulkey imo, Gumiho has been very consistent and a top 4 terran lately, Soulkey was the best Zerg in the world from his GSL win until the rise of soO in 2014.

It's really impressive that this format has given a relatively fair balance this late into the polls, although I expect most of the Protoss to drop off soon.

All pretty simple, torn on Gumigod vs Soulkey

Probably gotta be Gumiho though, on an edge. I think he’s been consistently experimental and developed tons of different styles over the years, and has pushed his race on a bit. That he’s had his best results in the era of mechanical monsters and is still relevant, also bloody impressive.

His battlemech style is also legitimately great to watch and requires the precision and multitasking of the most aggressive bio.

I never really cared for making mech work as an end in itself, especially if it’s avilo style mech. Mech styles that are both strategically good and make for good games too, fuck yeah!

Soulkey was just really, a Zerg, just a crazy good one. Despite the above I probably would have voted SK if Gumigod hadn’t got him a Code S

I mean don’t get me wrong Gumiho isn’t bad mechanically, he’s just not Maru/Innovation/TY either

Like Polt it’s good to see that good strategy and thinking can sometimes win the day vs pure mechanics.

They were objectively wrong to vote him through last round.
I bear this sig to commemorate the loss of the team icon that commemorated Oversky's 2008-2009 Proleague Round 1 performance.

Well we got a bunch of pvp (as the day dictate) so they should be fine for now, but I'm also curious going foward.
.
Protoss players never seemed to have the same legacy as zerg and terran, both in BW and SC2. (hell even Stuchiu list had only 3 toss in the top 15) We rarelly think about Zest, sOs, Classic, Rain or MC when talking about the game greatest but I think the format will beneficiate them, since a lot of toss had objectivly amazing career.

That's true although there is one major difference: Protoss in Brood War is the race that has won, by far, the least while in Starcraft 2 is currently the one with the most Premier tournaments. Unlike Terran whose victories were mostly reached by a few highly accomplished players, Protoss share theirs much more evenly between a larger amount of players.

I can see an argument either way for DRG vs Boxer.

Boxer did do a LOT for SC2. Especially in terms of being the face of Slayers, the best GSTL team of all time IMO.

But DRG was the second zerg Overmind after inheriting the powers of Nestea. His series against MMA at Blizzard Cup 2011 was still one of, if not simply the best, series of all time.

Tough call.

I guess I considered it more as a pure player v player kinda contest.

Boxer has a lot going for him outside of that though, although really a lot of what he was able to do was based on his Brood War legend status too

I think we do under-appreciate sometimes quite how much the non-players bring to the scene though, for sure, especially the people behind the scenes that we don’t even see.

What’s SC2 without Boxer and Slayers? Hell what’s SC2 like without Tastosis

SC2 without those things is essentially worthless.

Edit: What's crazy though is Serral could be gone after the Ro16.
