For me, absolutely. It doesn't matter that I don't understand them, I know the game well enough to follow on my own. But they are just so fucking hyped it makes me more excited.

Or other people have different opinions. Damn people. I like to listen to these two. I must be wrong!

Damn... But as someone who's never played SC 2 and exclusively watches, casters typically still point out a lot of things that I would not notice/understand.

These days it is. Sure it's important to have some degree of consistency to allow a metagame to develop. But what we see in SC2 now is not a developing metagame, it's stagnation. Every game plays out the same, every map plays out the same. It's boring as shit. You need to keep things fresh and reward innovation.

Some crazy new maps to shake things up a bit are a very welcome addition and long overdue. The overwhelmingly favorable response should be proof enough of that.


I don't think we ought to conflate his point on the metagame with the fact that the current metagame is stale. These are separate issues. I don't think his point was ever that there should never be new maps, it's that really odd maps can be gimmicky, which is something that COULD happen to Arkanoid. Some clever player might just figure out the map, and then it'll be a never-ending litany of mirror matchups with the same build. This is just as bad of a metagame.


If that happens then you scrap the map. You should constantly be introducing new ones anyway. Often maps can produce incredible games at first until it's flaws are figured out and when that happens you just move on to something else. Daybreak is a prime example of this. Universally loved at first that map should have been retired long ago because these days it produces the most boring PvZ games possible.


I agree that the current map pool is stale, and new maps should be introduced more often. Preferably not too many large maps either. But introducing maps such as arkanoid is not the solution.

Also, don't confuse 'playing the metagame' with playing standard. There are hundreds of different builds and strategies for every race in sc2 right now, there is a ton of potential for different and interesting games.

Still, the problems with the maps when a matchup becomes stale are subtle. A slightly less defensible third, a slightly larger choke to the natural, and small stuff like that is all it takes to make a difference. The reason for PvZ being stale is that we only see PvZ on the same old maps over and over. But new maps does bring out new stuff despite not being retarded such as arkanoid. You can't play PvZ on abyssal city like you do on daybreak.

Entombed Valley has an easier to defend 3rd and is the archetypal Protoss turtle map. Abyssal and Dual Sight are terrible maps for taking a third, so we see a ton of 2 base allins from Protoss. Neither is particularly interesting, but yeah point taken.



IMO this is the last amazing 4player map i played on the ladder, better than antiga and entombed which have very lame problems (antiga hard to take 4th, entombed too easy to take third)

wish map creators tried hard to create a great 4player map (where all 4 spawn locations are allowed and balanced) im sure its possible


imo a great 4player map is so amazing to watch with the early scouting needed to do
