Sure, if all you're interested in is entertaining games. A competitive RTS is more about entertainment, there is supposed to be a developed strategic skillset involved. That's what keeps it interesting in the long run anyway. Mindlessly doing the exact same cookie cutter build every single game on every single map is not a developed strategic skillset. Here we see those who prepare for a map, come up with their own strategies, actually adapt and play smart are those who do well. Playing the metagame is nothing like doing the exact same old cookie cutter build... You have no idea what you're talking about. These days it is. Sure it's important to have some degree of consistency to allow a metagame to develop. But what we see in SC2 now is not a developing metagame, it's stagnation. Every game plays out the same, every map plays out the same. It's boring as shit. You need to keep things fresh and reward innovation. Some crazy new maps to shake things up a bit are a very welcome addition and long overdue. The overwhelmingly favorable response should be proof enough of that. I don't think we ought to conflate his point on the metagame with the fact that the current metagame is stale. These are separate issues. I don't think his point was ever that there should never be new maps, it's that really odd maps can be gimmicky, which is something that COULD happen to Arkanoid. Some clever player might just figure out the map, and then it'll be a never-ending litany of mirror matchups with the same build. This is just as bad of a metagame. If that happens then you scrap the map. You should constantly be introducing new ones anyway. Often maps can produce incredible games at first until it's flaws are figured out and when that happens you just move on to something else. Daybreak is a prime example of this. Universally loved at first that map should have been retired long ago because these days it produces the most boring PvZ games possible. I agree that the current map pool is stale, and new maps should be introduced more often. Preferably not too many large maps either. But introducing maps such as arkanoid is not the solution. Also, don't confuse 'playing the metagame' with playing standard. There are hundreds of different builds and strategies for every race in sc2 right now, there is a ton of potential for different and interesting games. Yeah we do see a lot of variation in PvZ especially in the current map pool don't we? Still, the problems with the maps when a matchup becomes stale are subtle. A slightly less defensible third, a slightly larger choke to the natural, and small stuff like that is all it takes to make a difference. The reason for PvZ being stale is that we only see PvZ on the same old maps over and over. But new maps does bring out new stuff despite not being retarded such as arkanoid. You can't play PvZ on abyssal city like you do on daybreak. You just fucking hate the map because of the rocks. all games i saw on this map. besides the thorzain trash game were fucking nice so mb get the rock out of your ass and mb someday you will like rocks. BW also had "rocks" and it was perfectly fine. they even had "rocks" stacked on each other. jaehoon's game was pretty bad

You can't play PvZ on abyssal city like you do on daybreak. Entombed Valley has an easier to defend 3rd and is the archetypal Protoss turtle map. Abyssal and Dual Sight are terrible maps for taking a third, so we see a ton of 2 base allins from Protoss. Neither is particularly interesting, but yeah point taken.
