ASUS ROG announces the full player list and more details about the upcoming $10 000 USD invitational tournament ASUS ROG The GD Invitational held in Stockholm 13-14 October.

Only two weeks to go until the next ASUS ROG Tournament starts in Stockholm, Sweden. As we previously announced, eight European players are invited to battle over the trophy in the two day tournament in a laid back environment provided by the GD Studio crew and their house. Earlier, we revealed three names ( fi (P)ROG.elfi, ua (T)Empire.Kas, nl (Z)TLAF-Liquid.Ret), but now the roster is complete with the remaining five invites going to some of the best names in Europe:
fr EG.(Z)Stephano.RC, se EG.(T)ThorZaIN.RC, mouz.(P)MaNa, es Karont3.(T)LucifroN and [image loading] FnaticRC.(P)NightEnD.

There has been a change in the tournament format since the last announcement. The group stage will be played in a round robin format instead of the GSL style double tournament format. The reason for this is that with only one player dropping out in a group the usual problems in a round robin system are avoided, and also the GSL style group doesn’t leave much suspense for the last match as both of the players are going to advance regardless of the result.

More details such as groups and schedule released closer to the tournament.

Tournament details
  • Location: The GD Studio, Stockholm, Sweden
  • Date: Oct 13-14
  • Prize pool: 10 000 $
  • Players: 8 invited European players
  • Format: Groups + playoffs
  • Casters: Apollo & Semmler + guests
  • Stream: Free HD stream
  • Event type: Studio, no live audience

Full player list
  • fi (P)ROG.elfi
  • ua (T)Empire.Kas
  • nl (Z)TLAF-Liquid.Ret
  • fr EG.Stephano.RC de (Z)TLAF-Liquid.TLO (Stephano cancels)
  • se (T)EG.ThorZaIN.RC
  • [image loading] (P)mouz.MaNa
  • es (T)Karont3.LucifroN
  • [image loading] (P)FnaticRC.NightEnD

Prize distribution
  • 1st: $4000
  • 2nd: $2000
  • 3rd/4th: $1000
  • 5th/6th: $700
  • 7th/8th: $300

Tournament format
  • 2 x 4 player round robin groups
  • Top 3 advances from each group
  • 6 player single-elimination playoffs (group winners advance directly to semi-finals)

Map pool
  • TheGD Daybreak (6x1 middle base)
  • TheGD Antiga Shipyard (No gold bases, forced cross-spawns)
  • TheGD Entombed Valley (Horizontal spawns disabled)
  • TheGD Cloud Kingdom

Roster looks awesome! Not many Zergs so Kas and Lucifron have a shot at going far. I like it a lot, thanks for doing this invitational! Can't wait to see The GD Studio producing a tournament out of their own home.

These little less "formal" tournaments with free HD streams, good production and good foreign players always makes me more excited to watch than say an MLG or IPL. We need more Homestory Cups and Asus ROG's :D

Homestory doesn't have free HD but I get your point, the relaxed atmosphere is a nice change of pace.

That is basically a top7 europe lineup plus elfi, Nerchio is missing though. Very strong and very sick.

It's in the 2GD house so i guess no audience, but it's 'LAN' so i dont really mind if there's no audience on small invitationals like this.

Replace Elfi/NightEnD with Grubby/TitaN and Ret with Nerchio and its as close to top8 europe as you can get IMO, which is pretty damn sick. Rets a big name and really good when in shape ofc and Elfi always upsets somehow and he was rank 1 on ladder not long ago so the shape seems to be there; all in all pretty sick Lineup.

Depending on how the bracket looks I'd expect Stephano vs Kas/Vortix in the finals with Stephano winning 3-1 Kas / 3-2 Vortix..

But honestly, Im just really hoping for a tournament full of 2GD trolling and shenanigans XD,

Awesome tournament, but it's kinda missing Nerchio if you wanted to find the king of europe

Nerchio instead of Ret or Elfi wouldve been cool, but I'm gonna watch it anyway.

There are 3 1v1 maps out of 5, and the best foreigner is playing. I expect to see Stephano get a lot of cheese. xD

Given how Ret usually plays, I'd give him the lowest chance of trouncing Stephano out of all the players attending.

I’m not that stoked about some of the players invited but in general this is a nice step towards appearance fees. I’d love this model to be used even in the big tournaments so that even the lower placed players get paid some amount of money. Anyway, let’s hope this will be as entertaining as the last one!

Absolutely insane line-up, this is pretty much the best Europe has to offer, I'm very excited to see the outcome! Wouldn't be surprised if stephano wins without dropping a single game.

Honestly? I'd give LucifroN the best chance at killing Stephano. Ret hasn't been known to be all that good ZvZ...

I do, because I wanted to go to Stockholm and watch games live

I have decided to compile a quick Power Rank for this tournament based off my own opinions:

8. elfi - Best known for being rhe runner up at IEM Guangzhou last year, losing 1 - 3 to an on-form Gracken. Elfi is Finland's representative in this tournament and sadly hasn't gotten any big results since. He missed out narrowly by one game on qualifying for WCS Europe to Naama. Blame the exhaustive double elimination format favouring whoever emerges from the Winners Bracket but I don't see Elfi getting very far.

7. MaNa - As shown by his debut in GSL, MaNa's PvT at least against Koreans has been terrible. However, Mana should not be counted out just yet. Poland's Protoss mastermind just might recover from his recent GSL catastrophe but don't count on it.

6. Kas - Kas has lacked results as of late, not surviving for long in many of the major tournaments he's entered. But he ladders to ridiculous extents and may be ready to hit top form again. Watch out for him. He can be a force to be reckoned with.

Kas clearly has a strong work ethic to back up his skill. He is a workaholic and this will augment his play nicely.

5. ThorZaIN - Showing three very brief levels of dominance, ThorZaIN won TSL3 then Dreamhack Open: Stockholm and finally WCS Sweden. Has the EG Curse crippled his ability to win games? I think not. My theory is that ThorZaIN in general is cursed with inconsistency. He was quite inconsistent in major and premier tournaments on Mousesports as well.

But who knows? ThorZaIN might strike gold. He already stole the "King in the North" crown that was originally intended for Naniwa for his rare success in Code S, just by winning a Dreamhack.

4. Nightend - Romania's angel-voiced Protoss is one of those "ex-WC3 players" that people never thought would do so well transitioning over to StarCraft II yet here he is. Nightend is one of the players who has the benefit of a Korean teamhouse environment (Yes, FnaticRC actually owns a team house in Korea) and this will in time make him a top contender.

3. THE LIQUID'RET LINE - Seeing as Grubby was not invited to this tournament, I have decided to use another well known Dutch player to fill in his place. Introducing.... Liquid'Ret. Whereas Grubby is well known for his repetoire of 4th place finishes (SHOUTCraft Invitational 4, ESWC 2011, The Gathering 2012, Lone Star Clash etc) Liquid's drone obsessed madman lacks such near-successes, only recently managing to place 4th in NASL Season 3, the first NASL that PuMa hasn't steamrolled.

Nevertheless, don't count Ret out. Aside from droning to extremes, he can win games. Lots of games. He is probably Liquid's best and most consistent Zerg player, outshadowing the likes of TLO, Sheth and Zenio by a long shot.

And this entry would not be complete without a plea to follow @LiquidRet on Twitter.

2. Lucifron - Best known for beating ThorZaIN 4 - 0 in the SCAN Invitational 5, 2-0ing his patchzerg brother in WCS Spain and 4-1ing Brat_OK in The Gathering 2012, Lucifron is a beast that should never be underestimated. But unfortunately... he has a big thorn that will undoubtedly stop him from winning the tournament, and that is...

1. Stephano - He requires no explanation. The Michael Scheumacher of the European StarCraft II scene, he is on a destruction path that will lead him to winning tournament after tournament. Well.... if the EG curse doesn't catch up to him that is. Will Stephano predictably win yet another European tournament and make the European scene stale in his path?

Not hating on Stephano but I legitimately think he is the only foreigner actually skilled enough to cleave through even KeSPA Koreans. Mark my words. Stephano will dominate. That is unless Ret punts him out of the tournament in his weakest (but still strong) matchup.

If ThorZain doesn't win it's because of the EG curse. If Stephano doesn't win it's because of the EG curse. Will the curse strike twice? That's the real question...

With Stephano's new ZvZ Ret stands very little chance at taking a game off him. The only player with a chance is Lucifron imo as Stephano seems to be pretty weak vs mech (compared to his usual level) and Lucifron is so good at it.

To be fair, after going 2-0 against Kas at the Absolute legends tournament on the way to winning it, I can see Elfi taking possible sets off anyone here, (he ended Stephano's 30+ game PvZ win streak in the past before losing the set 2-1 at a previous tournament, and he's showed the ability to beat Life 2 games in a row, his PvZ is scary in its unpredictability). His PvP really doesn't need any speaking for, he said for a while it was his worst matchup, but that he's finally figured it out again and you can count on him being an anomaly when it comes to PvP.

So much talent and skill lmao.
No wonder Stephano declined the MvP invite, he wants to play against the best...

I'm sure elfi will challenge Stephano more than Flash, Bisu, Last, or Jaedong.
So tuning into this EPIC tournament. lol

WOW I can't believe you couldn't read the sarcasm.

I guess if you think elfi is even remotely close to Flash, Bisu, Last, or Jaedong in skill you must have a great understanding of the game. lmao.

Stephano knows he wouldn't make it past 2nd round of an OSL or GSL Code S so he stays in Europe.

Have fun whooping on players that wouldn't even make the B-team of a Korean team.

Hah, not even that. James will make sure Stephano drinks his share, considering what happened last time those two were together :D.

No wonder Stephano declined the MvP invite, he wants to play against the best...

I'm sure elfi will challenge Stephano more than Flash, Bisu, Last, or Jaedong.
So tuning into this EPIC tournament. lol

Agree, this is so true! :D

He don't wanna play in us crappy tournament and have free wins.

GOGO ELFI!

Rofl, he he has beaten mma mvp taeja hero mc parting squirtle violet drg curious and 100 more top tier koreans all in the past, he has won 4 major lans now. He is atleast top 10 in skilled players atm, stop talking down on stephano. he would easily get top 8 in GSL if he gave all his time to it like all these korean guys.

wat.

Elfi won't even win this tournament, and these guys are just Europeans. You really think Elfi's as good as the better Koreans (even the top-tier Kespa players)? o.O

He was referring to Stephano, in case you missed that.

Loving these invite tournaments where there are no 50 players battling it out with two group stages and enormous brackets. It would be cool if a foreign terran could win, I can't stand the stephano fanboys announcing that he "has this"

Ok, it was a bit of an exaggeration. Stephano is extremely talented and have great mechanics.
My main point is the competition in this tournament is non existent compared to the MvP invite that he declined and he runs away from every chance to go play in Korea.
It makes a lot of sense financially because he would be placing first in most of them due to the competition, but man up and prove you're the best by winning a GSL or OSL.

"if he gave all his time to it like all these korean guys" lol
I'm sure this is every european pro's excuse for being so inferior.

Flash and Last, maybe, but I don't think any of those players could successfully carry a series against top European pros atm. Sure, they might get past one or two, but seriously? Thorzain? Lucifron? Stephano? I could understand if you were talking Gumiho or MVP or Parting but the only player really pulling his weight for KeSPA at the moment is Rain. The rest are like, mid tier code A and the last time Thorzain played GSL without being incredibly ill, he gave us a ridiculously epic and capable performance against a Code S class terran.

It's not easy money. Stephano's a hell of a player but he's more than capable of losing to half the names on that list, especially if they bring their A game. Lucifron and Thorzain are more than capable of taking him down.

I did. What is the best way to answer sarcasm? Make more sarcasm :D

I guess my game understanding must be awful because I think that Elfi is probably close in skill to Bisu. Obviously JaeDong, Flash, and Last are capable of Code S quality games, and are at least Code A quality (I still believe JaeDong is Code A quality despite his quick departure from Code A)l, but Bisu has shown good games against some NA players, but I haven't yet seen the "next level" you'd expect from him, though admittedly I haven't seen all his games. I think Elfi's recent EU performances show he can play on a better level than most people give him credit for.

EDIT: Your larger point stands, but I don't think comparing Elfi to Bisu is the best way to make your point.

The American players are far more inferior compared to the Europeans players and the us tournaments have like 20 Koreans at every event. at least our top players can compete with the Koreans in some degree.
