When you have HP/armor stack advantage, you can deny spawning HP bubbles/Armors. Players use the ingame clock to time spawns on items.

They know the timers and the map layout, so they can force the other player to a sertain area and then take the mega or armor etc

It depends on the health / armor / weapons you have
If you're ahead you can bully the opponent away from item and weapon spawns so they can't fight you

You listen/know where the other player is, therefore you know where they can go. So you get yourself into positions where he can't go after the bigger items, mega health/red armor etc. without taking damage or risking death all together.

Some positions are better than others, and items play a huge role in quake. If you have more item pickups, I.E. more weapons, health and armor, then you have the advantage => map control.

you spawn randomly and if the spawns are bad far away from powerups or weapons the player in the lead can be in such a big advantage,

quick glossary of QL abbreviations and terms:

YA - Yellow Armor (gives you 50 armor, the 2nd best armor item)

PG- (pros like to spam this to be annoying. hard to hit players with, yet deals good amage. non-hit scan)
RG-Rail Gun (one of the 3 best weapons. the best weapon to use at long distances (infinite range). deals great damage but very slow reload time. Hitscan)
GL- Grenade Launcher (Shoots grenades that blow up after a period of time. If you hit a person with a grenade, it blows up instantly. damage is effectively same as rockets. non-hitscan)

note on health and armor: Health's "soft" cap is 100, normal health items can only give you a max of 100. however Mega Health and health bubbles can give you up to 200 health

Armor's max is 200

both health and armor gradually fall down to 100 if you have over 100. You start with 0 Armor and about 125 health
for the bottom HUD: first number is Health, then Armor, and Ammo.

This game is awesome, free at http://www.quakelive.com , and is probably the best spectator esport possible. It really just needs players, as it feels really lonely playing there nowadays

Rapha is the most successful player in QuakeLive in terms of winning tournaments. Cypher has won a lot too and has the best all-round-skill imo (Rapha has kinda weak aim for example). Best aimer is strenx

They didn't for SF3 either. I don't think it's needed so much in these kind of games.

In SC2, a huge crowd cheer can let a player know their opponent know something's up (Such as the "Don't worry, that's Halo" Mothership thing). Not really the case here.

A map can favour someone based on their playstyle or if they are good with a specific weapon.
