ye rapha only came out in quakelive while cypher was a toptop player alrdy in quake3. but he switched to quake4 in between and rapha didn't. so in the early days of quakelive cypher etc weren't in top form as they were adjusting to quake live when the quake4 scene died

Totally different skill set. Quake's skill cap is up there with SC/BW, its super hard to play at top level.

Yeah I played a lot of quake 3 over the years and it was always one of my favorite games. I was wondering how they never lose track of the opponent.
