Looks like machine and drewbie won't be in the brackets next time. There are still several people competing for the bottom few spots though, so tomorrow should be exciting.

Did they lose against other really good players? Yes. Does that reflect how they would do against less proven players? Not necessarily. Take drewbie as an example, he lost all of his matches, but took games off of a number of good players. I personally feel like Drewbie is a bit of a different example, the guy is generally very consistent, but the sudden burst of skill at MLG has really put him on the back-foot, he still manages to stay competitive but can't close out a series. At Dallas he was 3-0 in his group, there's even an interview with Josh Suth where they joke about the possibility that the player from the open bracket could come through and ruin his day, little did they know... that was Naniwa, who swept the group 4-0. Then at Columbus he went 1-2 in almost all his matches. inControl doesn't really show strong performances in most tournaments these days, I don't even see him play in most online events either because he doesn't qualify or doesn't want to. I just don't see him belonging in the championship pool. Few people do, and it's ridiculous that such poor performers will be seeded into the next tournament. I feel like it really changes at the start of each season, where the points only count for the first event and for the second they go purely by placing from the first event.
Before Koreans came it was "easier" to get seeded into MLG. All you had to do was make it in, then consistently win a couple of games and hold your top 16 seed. Completely unfair. Like someone else said, someone from the open bracket at this point would need to finish 7th or better to be seeded into the next MLG. While someone going 0-5 may still have enough points for next MLG.

I'd say just wait til next season for a more telling Top 16.

Yeah, it resets every year and people do drop out. It's just that there are examples of people who really just claw themselves towards a respectable placement and are set for so fucking long afterwards. inControl got out of a group that was basically anyone's game with like 1 game, that guaranteed him top 6, then TLO did the heavy lifting only to go full retard once again upon hitting inControl.
Now, despite his poor performances, he's basically set for the rest of the tournament season.
One strong finish should leave you in the clear for another 2 events, let's see how it goes. Maybe he'll drop out next event.

Machine and Drewbie both have a good chance of staying in pool play next time, but they are on the cusp. Tyler has a chance to fight back into top 16.

Totally agree. They should cut down on pool play to just 4 people at the start. The fifth player is just terrible in each group.

What it comes down to, for me as a fan, is seeing good games. Just because someone is top 16, doesn't mean it will be a good game. All this fake hype and fake rivalries, really just overdo it. "Incontrol has always had to battle against Machine" .. too bad huh? Maybe that way one of them would win. Not such a bad thing considering they went 0-5.
The GSL does a so-so job at weeding out the players who don't belong. But it's still 10x better than MLG.
|
I think it's ultimately a result of the pool format. If you're a mediocre seeded player then your performance relies very heavily on how the pools are allocated. Get a group with another mediocre player or two and you can place well-enough to get enough points to keep your seed into the next tournament. Get an easy group, like for example iNcontroL at Dallas, and you can ride that into an extremely high placing without beating anyone outside your group. It's going to work out in the long run as good players slowly climb into those seeded positions, but it's not very optimal.

Alot of those EG players are relying more on their personalities than their gameplay to get a fanbase/living.

and these guys have to beat MVP? DongraeGu?
There's playing to win, and playing to last. Just like in Poker. these guys are simply playing to last.

Umm machine dropped out of GM cause he went to Europe. He was like around 50ish before dropping out.
