How is this helping esport? This is more like greedy business than an esport competition. Just look at EU and KR tournaments. Everything is free. GSL doesn't cost a penny to spectate or participate, and they even have free Coke drink and sometimes pizza. This is just funny. It reminds me of those internet scam where you participate in a survey and at the end they ask for your credit card number. Dude, it's 10 bucks. Anyone good enough to get top 8 in this thing is probably already on a team who's happy to pay this exorbitant fee.

I'm not saying it is necessarily a bad idea, but that doesn't seem to be a reason why they are charging $10. The administrative overhead probably wouldn't be worth it if they had to return it - repaying people requires a whole lot more paperwork than recieving a payment does to satisfy an audit. The $10 being non-refundable also discourages people from joining "just 'cause".

If your concern is paperwork, then no entry fee would be much less paperwork.

common man $10 per entry for 1000 spots and only giving $500 in return? Seems very a bit greedy. I reckon $2k payout seems reasonable

I think it's a good idea to have open qualification for season two, obviously, because inviting players that lose every match convincingly just makes bad TV, but to have an invite into the playoffs this season, how does the player seeded right under 20th who's getting fked by this feel? Also, pretty sure NASL said every week since week 1 how the playoff was structured. Now it's changing? Did someone drop out? Do both the 20th and 21st seeds not have the ability to make the playoffs? Isn't only the quarterfinals live anyway? I don't understand this. It's like getting Code S for winning Raleigh. It just doesn't make sense. I guess it's better than inviting players like Grubby and Painuser to be group punching bags, or Gretorp losing every single set and still getting paid to attend Columbus, but I think any player currently in the top 20-25 (top 50%) deserves to be there, and not get shafted...

Come on... editted: And I understand pro players that weren't invited will be playing in this open, but you don't have to worry about IdrA, SeleCT, Kiwi, Naniwa, any Koreans... You don't have to understand the crazy format of NASL (pretty sure incontrol said on stream that it was weird), to understand that you don't qualify for the Playoffs of a League after not having played in the league. That's like if the Patriots didn't play all season, but beat a bunch of College teams to qualify for the post-season. Explain it. Don't just pretend you know something everyone else doesnt.

Can no one from NASL play? Can only the people outside of the top 20 play? If no one can play, aren't they being done a disservice by being penalized for participating in your league? If everyone can play, are there incentives for the top 20 not to? (do they already get a travel stipend?) If ouside of top 20 can play, was there any reason for them to play, or play their best, in their last 2-3 matches? Once players were eliminated from the playoffs / auto qual for next season, couldn't they have just peaced and waited for this tournament? Were outside the top 20 players informed that they could make playoffs from a single 10-11 round tournament after the league was over? Was anyone informed until now? Do you think players would have accepted their invitations if they knew that there would be arguably worse players fighting for a spot in the playoffs elsewhere? How does an Ro21 work?

Honestly it's ten bucks, that's chump change. Like the guy above said, any pro team would be willing to chip in ten bucks for their competitor and it keeps out chumps who are so bad that they wouldn't even pay ten bucks to compete in the tournament.
