Yeah Phoenix beat mutas with amove 5 : 9.

So 20 Phoenix for instance beat 36 mutas with just amove, with micro it's even better for phoenix. I guess he didn't make enough of them. He stopped making Phoenix for a long time while massing Colossus, I think that wasn't good. He had like 8 Phoenix back then, had more than enough time to build up the numbers.

The thing with phoenix vs. a large ball of mutas, is that the muta ball one shots your phoenix, and badly hurts a couple others every time they attack. Which means if you move in to engage, and they move forward too, you lose phoenix. Then you back out, they back out, and you do it again. You have to be extremely cautious, and meanwhile, the mutas are blowing up buildings.

he also through away a lot of phoenixes while failing to harass the zerg's 3rd i think (or 4th) ..

Spine crawlers are the best mineral sink for zerg in mid-to-late game, period. Don't bother building zerglings to defend expansions, just build spine crawlers. Ret would have a good chance of winning if he had build 4 spine crawlers in front of his morphing brood wars.

I actually play random, and my go-to strategy for zvp and zvt is to make as many mutalisks as possible no matter what my opponent is making.
