Starcraft Against Diseases presents...
Vancouver S.A.D. SC2 Charity LAN Tournament

*****RESULTS*****

Hey everyone,

I want to thank everybody for showing up yesterday! I think the tournament turned out really well and I want to give SPECIAL THANKS to GoatRope, CheAse, Cedstick, ChToniC and Chris from DNA Cafe for their great support for the tournament; you guys really made the tournament a lot better than I expected.

The tournament went on for a LOT longer than I expected (5+ hours longer....) I can't believe it lol. Rope and CheAse must have crazy soar necks right now; I cant thank you enough for dedicating 15 hours of your time casting games non-stop. Also, big thanks to Chris from DNA for giving us a huge discount on the venue fees.

We only had about 44 players show up (including a few backups) rather than 64, but I think it worked out in the end because if everyone showed up we probably wouldn't have finished by.... 3am? lol. I really want to post the brackets but since the brackets were pretty messed up due to missing players there were quite a few byes I'll just post the top results (I'll try to be more organized next time around.. sorry about this).

Total Pool: $1020
Donation to Charity: $300 + ($5 extra Donation from someone, sorry for forgetting your name!) = $305 (still talking with Stalife where it's going)
Prize Pool: $720
1st Prize: $360 Stalife
2nd Prize: $180 Neans
3rd Prize: $110 KawaiiRice
4th Prize: $70 FireZerg
5th: SCanenome, badguy
7th: AlphaIIOmega, TooFresh
9th: Kira, Ice, BaBy, Chronopolis

I hope you guys enjoyed the stream from Rope and hopefully we have some podcasts of the event soon.

Although I was quite exhausted at the end, I had tons of fun meeting everyone there and really enjoyed all the games that I was watching. I hope you guys had fun as well, and hopefully show up again when we host S.A.D. #2! Thanks everyone for supporting a good cause, the local scene and SC2 in general.

Justin Yu

*****UPDATE4*****
http://challonge.com/tournament/bracket_generator?ref=FDBXRHPBWC

Bracket has been created. I don't know if anyone is still around reading this, but this bracket was generated using ELO for top/bottom 8, and random for the rest. See you guys all tomorrow!

*****UPDATE3***** Bracket has been removed as I am expecting a lot of changes on the day of the tournament. Sorry for making things so confusing but I'm just doing it so that everyone is happy about the whole process and to make it fair as possible. So here is another poll suggested by Stalife:

Poll: Seed top/bottom 8 according to ELO and randomize the rest?

Yes, randomize the rest. (28)

70%

No, seed according to ELO for all. (12)

30%

40 total votes

Your vote: Seed top/bottom 8 according to ELO and randomize the rest?

(Vote): Yes, randomize the rest.
(Vote): No, seed according to ELO for all.

So this poll will run to Oct 8th, and I will generate the actual bracket on the 9th after checking in the players.

JY

*****UPDATE2***** Some people have been suggesting that we seed the brackets according to ELO points. An example of this is found HERE. Basically, the highest ELO would be seeded with lowest ELO, 2nd highest EL with 2nd lowest ELO etc. The other alternative would be to randomize the seeding. Let me know what you guys think by voting below!

****UPDATE**** Venue has changed to DNA internet cafe in Richmond for reasons such as venue fee, space and Time constraints. Prize pool will get bigger as well as the donation amount! Also, the tournament won't be as long since we will have more computers. Also, date is now set to be October 9th, 2010.

WHEN

It is going to be on Oct 9th

Check In: Starts at 10:00AM until 10:45AM at DNA Internet Cafe. Please don't be late! If you have not checked-in by 10:45AM, backup players will take your place and you will be DQed from the tournament. Tournaments will begin at 11:00AM and should be over before 6:00PM (Should be 6~7 hours long)

VS Gaming is open from 12pm to 12am on Saturdays, so the tournament will start ~12pm and hopefully end before 12am! If my calculation is right, it should end by then... lol

Also, what do you guys think of the map pool? Anyone mind the prodiG's maps? I got a few requests that we put in some of prodiG's maps to spice things up a bit lol

well done! I'm up for it. Not sure about how others feel about this, but losing round of 64 then playing loser round of 32 on kulas can be frustrating for some match ups... wouldn't mind seeing this one changed to perhaps a 3rd prodiG map? :D

does that mean, the prize pool is donated to a charity... or the prize pool is $1000 and the rest of the $920 is donated to charity?

Thanks for the kind words! Updated with players that registered.

The prodiG maps are on B.net. Go to Custom Games, Create, then search iCCup; you should be able to find his maps there.

I would come, problem is I live in Victoria. If i were to come, I would need to know the exact date, and some form of housing for that night. Great idea though! If it was organized sooner i definitely would make the trip over with a friend.

You can win and pay for your housing that night! :D
For the exact date, I will decide after a few days of poll and see which date most people prefer. Hope it's a day you and your friend can make!

Thanks for your input. Changing venue won't be that hard, so I will go check out those venues today and see if it fits better for the tournament and update you guys on that. Thanks!

Updated. The date is now set to be Oct 9th. Sorry for any inconvenience to people that cannot make it! Also, the venue has also changed as I thought it fit the tournament better; shorter length, cheaper venue fee, parking, higher prizepool / donations etc.

Sorry Drewbie =[

Also, regarding charity amount, it is a charity event after all! $10 is not much for us, but it can definitely make a big difference to others that are in need. And to be specific, it is closer to $7~8 per person out of $30 because it is calculated after the venue fees.

Registration fees will be collected at the door!

I come to mainly have fun, see the local scene and support a good cause. I mean seriously, can it be any better than that?

Thanks again JY!

*EDIT* Hahahaha, thanks, Drewbie. Now we can have a different winner for once. I really wanted to bug you for an interview though

Also, if I forget / miss to add you onto the registered players list even though you posted on this thread, please PM me! I might have skipped you by accident (I hope I didn't miss any so far)
Thanks

Hey rope,

Nope, no stream lined up for this event yet. I'm not sure how the whole stream thing works (maybe only the later games? semis finals etc?) so let me know how that will work. I'd love for this to get streamed.

Too bad kimchi! You should still come out; it will only take 6~7 hours of your day lol. I have school too, 4th year at UBC, but this is gonna be fun. Thanks for the props : )

Hey JY, another question:

If we are eliminated, can we still play in the cafe? Like I plan to bring my friends and make them join and just have a fun time while tourneying + leisure gaming.

Hmm, it really depends.
We are getting 40 computers for the tournament so in the beginning of the tournament all the computers will be used for the tourney. However, as it progresses there might be free computers available. We are booking the comps until 6pm so if there are free computers some of the eliminated players might be able to use them til 6pm. If you want, you can pay yourself after 6pm it will cost ~$2.50 an hour if I recall.

Hey guys,

Registration is going great; we have 38 players already!
Anyways, there are some players that are bolded/italicized which show they haven't confirmed for sure yet. If you are one of these players please PM me when you are sure you can make it.

@Magrath, I'm not too sure about the webcams. Do you mean webcamming inside the venue or the games being played? I can ask Chris from DnA later about this.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of adding a bounty to the most "feared" player by votes of registered players. Don't worry, it will be out of my pocket and won't affect the prize pool or the donations : )

I would like an opportunity to do some casting for the match, I could make you a practice video I have some top level matches I haven't watched yet I could cast as a demo? I have never been the viewing caster and feel that I will excel at catching all the action as I watch the mini map extensively throughout matches.

As for the format of putting people into brackets, will it be random? Or seeded according to sc2 ELO rankings? I really liked the abbotsford lan's choice of seeding players according to ELO points. I think someone could make a customized division of all the players on sc2ranks.com :D

This sounds like it will be amazing, if not for those playing, but also certainly for those watching. I had no idea so many people lived around here.

Hmmm. I haven't thought about seeding according to ELO points; I was thinking of seeding randomly. What would be the advantage of seeding according to ELO? This will also be difficult because once you lose 1 game, you are in the loser group and it will be hard to seed them again into similar ELO groups, but let me know the details! Thanks Stalife

seeding according to points is a good idea. i recently played a tournament (hon sc2 pros tourny) where all the top players in sc2 were in the upper bracket. the bottom half of the bracket consisted of lower calibre players and one (obviously) made it to the finals and got the 2nd place prize pool...

what does this do tho? you have to seed people so that not all the 'high elo' players get stuck in the first 1-3 rounds and eliminate each other.

you dont want the ro1 games to be better than the finals

edit: a part from the added bounty for knocking one of these high elo players out

I see where you are coming from. But I think the bracket for this tournament works a little differently (at least I think?). So in order to get eliminated, you lose twice. Let's say all top players are seeded together by chance. One will come out on top, and the loser will be re-seeded into the loser group. Since now he is in the loser group, he won't need to face the other top caliber player and reach the finals of the loser group, then ultimately to the Grand Finals where they will face again (if the other player reached the Grand Final as well). Am I missing something here? I'm not too sure so please let me know if I'm wrong on anything! I'm a noob at hosting tournaments, but I sure enjoy it haha thanks!

I meant seeding according to ELO points as in like this... If it were just a 4 player tournament, it would be seeded so that it's 1st vs 4th, and 2nd vs 3rd. (in rankings). The basic idea is like the following image I found online
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=215662&tclass=Double Elimination - 8 teams
If we just expand this to 32 or 64 men tournament, it basically means that the top x number of players will not likely meet until x amount of players are left.

Having a customized division that shows you all the ELO points of the players attending this tournament helps seeding players and you can input the players into challonge accordingly.

Thanks for the explanation stalife.
By seeding according to ELO points, it seems fair and unfair at the same time to me.
So let's say our lowest ELO point player in the tournament is a Mid Gold level player. He will be seeded with Stalife or KawaiiRice? :S
Anyways, how about I post a Poll section and see what people think?

Wow, we have 60 players registered!
I'm gonna be adding a Backup Player section so don't hesitate to register! Players with bold names are not 100% sure they can make it, so if they cannot confirm soon we will replace them with backup players on a first come first serve basis. Also, if a player fails to check-in by 10:45 am then we will start checking in backup players to take their spot so you might have a chance to play.

I'm surprised how well this is turning out, greatttttt

We got 64 players!

As more registrations come in, we will first put you adjacent to the bolded players, then into the backup players area.

No, not necessarily. Depends if a registered player shows up before 10:45AM or not. If there are players that have not showed up until 10:45 AM and there are backup players on the spot, we will start checking in backup players in their place. Thanks for registering!

I know the last lan in BC ended up having no where near as many players showing up as they said.

Not sure how, but it would be a good idea to email the players or personally contact them to get a better understanding of who will be coming for sure.

I really disagree with the "play with the race you registered rule". Honestly this should be removed from all tournament play.

I would of like to switch to Zerg in some cases. This should also apply to tourneys that don't support random. That is an old rule that should be rid of.

this rule is to prevent people from exploiting others' bad matchups, and also to disallow players from avoiding bad matchups of their own.

random should be allowed, however.

If CheAse cannot confirm by Oct 1st his attendance, you will take his spot. If he does confirm, you will be moved into the backup player list ( You are #3 on backup list). If Tellit and Trancez cannot confirm either, Errol and SyN will take their place before you. Basically, you are #3 on backup list and the bolded players havent confirmed for sure they can make it so you have a higher chance to get in to the tournament. Hope that clears things up a little bit!

I want to remind the bolded players (Tellit, Trancez, CheAse, and Renoir please confirm for sure if you are attending by the Oct 1st through PM! Thanks!)

thats the point. so that stalife and kawaiirice dont play in ro64, ro32 or even ro8. like i said in my earlier post, you dont want a ro64 game being higher calibre than a semi or finals game when money is on the line.

It goes both way. I'd be sacrificing my main race to play an off race. I don't really see the difference. You could argue map imbalance but in the end its the same.

I finally finished all the work I wanted to do related to the podcast, so I can finally debut this episode, in which we shout-out this tournament right at the start. I'll be posting this in more places than just TL, so hopefully people in the area who find the podcast outside of TeamLiquid.net will come down and support http://esportscanada.net/podcast/Meta-Game_ep1.mp3

Is anyone else concerned that ELO based brackets is going to result in a TON of cheese in the first round?

I think ELO based bracket seeding should be done for like... top 8 players or so (assuming that it's 64 players) and just randomize everything else....

Sorry if I acted too fast about this, but I wanted to post the brackets asap because i said it will be up by today. I will reseed you if you want adrenalinG

Just to give some suggestions, you should wait to generate the brackets on the day of the tournament as there will be lots of people who don't show up. The brackets will get messed up, people will get confused, etc. etc.

In the meantime, I think a new poll with a third option to have top 4 or top8 players seeded with rest randomly generated could be added. I know you must have put a lot of effort with generating the current brackets though :D

Hey Stalife,

Yeah, you are definitely right. Many players might not show up, and there might be people pulling out of the tournament before the 9th, so doing the brackets again sounds like a good idea.
Also, I just checked the players' ELO points and seeding the top8 according to ELO and the rest randomly seems like a good idea; I think that is how I will be doing it on the day of.

Hey Contraud, thanks for letting me know in advance!

Yea, it's kind of a dick move -- or at least seems like it -- specifically putting Neans, the highest on the Blizzard ladder, against the dude who is the lowest on the ladder.

I noticed that the brackets are generated already but there's a new poll as well? Is the current bracket based on the 8 seed randomize everything else or pure ELO?

No there wouldn't be a entrance fee for spectators, but the venture we hosting this event at has other customers and space to move around will be limited. So we might have to implement some rule if there are too many spectators.

We will regenerate a new bracket on a closer date, or probably on the day of the event. We are still waiting for the new vote to end before deciding on the final seeding arrangement.

Haha ya JY is a dick... jking... =P

Well if we were to seed by ELO the highest rank will play the lowest rank and will trickle down in that fashion, so if the dude is the lowest in rank he will be put up against the highest in the first match anyway.

But it was our bad for not confirming, we will confirm everyone's rank and generate a new bracket in the arrangement according to the out come of the new vote.

Hey Cedstick,

Yeah, that is what I thought at first so I wanted to seed randomly, but since the poll showed around 65% of the people wanted to seed according to ELO, that is what we are going to do lol.

JZ is my friend I asked him to help me out during the event; I think he signed up on TL as that name LOL.

Hey neans,

When I seeded the bracket a few days ago you had the highest ELO points (I just checked and you dropped a bit). I will do the bracket again on the 9th as people check in to the tournament.

Yeah CheAse, I want to confirm as I am predicting some people might not show up. But I want to believe whoever hasn't messaged me yet about not showing up will, and hopefully some backups also show up so that they can take some spots in case some people decide to not show.

Hey guys,

I'm currently at DNA cafe and it seems that we will be short on the number of headsets (we will have a limited number provided by DNA). Please bring your own headset if you have one (iPod headsets will work) and if you can't bring 1 please PM me and I'll try to work something out. Thanks

I've got a suggestion.

When players have their downtime, would it be possible to create pseudo-areas organized by school so that schoolmates can meet each other? This way, a lot of local practice partnerships, interest in Starcraft and stronger CSL teams can form. It can further snowball into larger, more competetive LANs as well as other things.

P.S don't make it so exclusive so that those who don't go to a school feel left out.

This generally happens organically. At our Tourney players spent most their off time conversing and exchanging information. This wont be like the GSL where we are playing in PODs.

Yo,
I will be going to Vancouver tomorrow, more than likely I'll go to the cafe for a little bit of practice, since the place I'm staying at doesn't have a comp that can run SC2. Can I get info on rates and such?

Thanks

edit: also I won't have problems in plugging my own gear will I? I assumed not

If I remember correctly, its $7 from 9am to 6pm. Starting from 6pm, it is $1.75 an hour.
And I'm sure they don't care if you do use your own gear, just mention you are participating in the tournament on Saturday. Good luck Kawaii.

It's $2.75 an hour You can bring your own gear and you just plug them in on the front of the computer. Very easy. The monitors are like 22 or 23 inches. They have awesome chairs.

I had to lend my laptop to some guy so I didn't have a computer to play sc2 since Sunday :/ I went to the DNA lan cafe yesterday and today...and yeah.. not enough practice work > me

Hey CalvinStorm, unfortunately, you can only choose one race and that has to be used throughout the tournament (it seems like all tournaments do this, so we will do this too). Which race did you want to put down as your final race? Let me know

Take me off the list (Cedstick.) Between school and work I've had barely any time to practice, so I'm going to focus on event coverage solely.

We're thinking of doing a live podcast there assuming my new netbook can handle it Would you be cool with that? We'd like to get interviews of players between sets and after wins/losses, etcetera.

Hey did you ever upload the footage from L2SC? I have a blue snowball microphone you can use for the interviews its the same one Day9 uses and its super good, its omni directional so its great for 3 or more people too.

Hey guys,
All preparation is pretty much done, and JY is going to record all your ELO's one last time, then we going to seed you guys after everyone have signed in.

Don't be late, be sure you be there before 10:45AM

Good luck to everyone and hope to see you all there tomorrow. =)

Midterms have caught up with me and I really can't afford to throw away a whole day. I won't be showing up.

Sorry for being so last minute with my notice.

Would love for updated brackets posted in this thread after each round (or match!)

Hopefully the next one isn't scheduled in the middle of midterms. Best of luck to all participating.

I'll ask jzismvp at the tournament tomorrow, but would anyone be adverse to me saving replays from all the games in the tournament for a replaypack/anyone who'd want to cast them?

I was thinking about it today, and we have quite a few people and a number of big names. Should be some really interesting stuff to rewatch.

Bracket posted!

Also, since everyone except top/bottom 8 is randomized, we will just put in backups into spaces that is empty when we are checking in; unless that player has a very high/low ELO then we will replace him for the spot and the other player will move up/down.

See you guys all tomorrow!

We are planning to save the replay, but probably not for every single game. We will try to save the replay of the most interesting games. We are planning to launch a website where we'll post the pictures, some reply and some other information. Hopefully I can get one up soon, but because I'm pretty busy with school and other stuff, is kind a hard to wedge this project in at the moment. Depends on the turn out of this tournament, we might host another tournament in the future and I'll be sure to have our website up by then.

you can just re-generate the brackets tomorrow once the check ins are final, otherwise people will get upset from being shuffled around if high/low ELO players drop out or high/low ELO backup players check in, or if we dont have enough backup players for the no shows

Hum, I'm not sure if we can just put you into a spot, since there are back up players waiting. But I have a feeling we could use you tomorrow. I consider you as a back up at the moment. I hope you come tomorrow anyway, it will still be fun to watch and chat with other players if you couldn't play.

PS: You posted just in time, so I printed a name tag for you also, just in case you come.

Challonge is a live system. So once it is updated all you need to do it refresh the page and you can see the current standings.

Hahah. I've only played like 4 games in the past 2 weeks. Just been busy with work and other work and Civ5 LOL. Good luck to everyone and you're welcome AlphaOmega. Pretty much a bye, but don't reaper rush me or it may be a fun game.

PS. I'll bring a camera to take some cool pics. Maybe even write up an article is no one else can.

Oh, man, I had to leave early for work. Thankfully I managed to get a net connection at work to check-in on the tourney results. Firezerg fighteeeeeeeeeeng! (I hope)

Thanks a ton, once again, to Justin and the guys hosting. They've graced me with an interview which should be up sometime within the week in video format (as well as event coverage, player talk and an interview with KawaiiRice, who is the most apathetic dude I've ever met. In a chill way, though.)

On that note, sick to see Adrian (Kawaii) and Eric (CthoniC ?) make it up from Seattle

This was a great tournament ! My gf and I had a lot of fun today !! I give all the credits to my gf giving me all the power to luck out of this tournament !

Thank you to the organizers Justin, Jz, and the other guy I forget the name, but remember bnet name protocol haha You guys did an awesome job. I'm sure it lasted a lot longer than you guys expected, but I guess that's how things are at times.

Also, many thanks to Chease, goatrope, and scanemone for casting the games for 12+ hours ! I think you guys were having the toughest time there haha Thank you so much for sticking through it and making livestream of the event possible !

Thanks all ! I am 100% sure that there will be more in the near future :D Vancouver's sc community is awesome :D

Hey everyone, the turn out was amazing. I am so grateful to see so much enthusiasm from our local sc2 community. Once again thank you all for coming and help make this event such a success. We look forward to hosting another one in the future. But due to our busy schedules I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to plan another one until probably spring of next year.

I apologize for not being able to update any information during the tournament, as we had our hands full the whole time.

I want to thank all the local sc2 players for coming out to support our local tournament and help raise money for charity.
I want to thank all the people that came in from outside of Vancouver to support the sc2 community.
I want to thank all the web casters for streaming our tournament in such a entertaining fashion, haha.
Lastly I want to thank DNA for lending their place for us and giving us such a awesome rate.

Here are some updates, I believe JY will provide a more detail bracket tomorrow. (Sorry we're pretty exhausted, haha)

Top Four:
1st: Stalife 925 T 1990 D (Won: $360)
2nd: neans 693 T 1931 D (Won: $180)
3rd: KawaiiRice 954 T 1898 D (Won: $110)
4th: FireZerg 882 Z 1725 D (Won:$70)

Financial Break Down:
Revenue: $30X44 = $1320 + ($5 Donation from *I'm sorry I forgot to mark you down* =P)
Supplies: $70 (-$20 Donation from us) = $50
Venue Cost: $250 (For 40 computer for the whole day and our tournament last till 12AM)
I want to thanks DNA again for giving us this awesome deal.

Total Pool: $1020
Donation to Charity: $300 + ($5 Donation) = $350
Prize Pool: $720
1st Prize: $360
2nd Prize: $180
3rd Prize: $110
4th Prize: $70

Congratulation to the winners and thank you all for your charitable donation.
(Donation information will be updated later, after Stalife choose a charitable organization)

Best wish to all the players in the future, and I hope everyone have fun and enjoyed the event.

PS: JY will be providing more detail soon.
PSS: Hopefully I can complete our website soon, so we can place pictures and video of the event.

Thank you all for attending,
JZ

Just wanna shout-out that Colin (Chronopolis) has been getting pretty good. Just watching him, he's noticeably faster, and he's got some pretty decent results as of late, taking 9th at this tournament and making the Round-of-16 in the North American TLOpen -- which FireZerg got to the Round-of-8 in, as a side note

Did Sungmin choose a charity, or is it just going to the default one?

Also, I finally sat down and organized all the clips, and have the first video being finished up right now. Going to be uploading the footage in parts, the first part just being a kind of intro to the event followed by an interview with the organizers. The second video will be longer, containing a bit of a storyboard of the event and having some player interaction. The third video will be awesome bullshit and funny stuff I caught on tape... so, mostly SCanemone being a shit-talker :D

Will update when the first vid is online

*EDIT* DONE! http://esportscanada.net/ for the first video of three, one posted each day for the next three. Podcast will be out tomorrow as well

FINAL UPDATE

Hey guys,
Just got back from meeting with Stalife and received the donation information.
He has kindly donated extra $195 (to a total of $500) from his paycheck to United Way.
Thank you guys again for making this possible, and hopefully we can have another one soon!
