This does make sense in hindsight. Koreans are batshitcrazy for starcraft, so you can charge them to watch high quality games. If GOM charges Koreans, then they have to charge the rest of the world or else they would lose massive amounts of money. I have spent $30 on worse things.

So have I... And I will strongly consider spending money on this... It just seems kind of backwards, since the foreign community has had free access to basically every pro BW and SC2 game played to date. Ever.

Sponsers are only worth so much. Eventually a business needs to get paid by its consumers to grow. Unless it's a super massive service like google or facebook.

Intel has no problem giving ESL millions of dollars to run multiple game tournaments with free streams. Why would Intel have a problem doing this for GomTV?

I don't pay to watch NFL, NBA, NCAA, PGA, or even MLG.

Unless I choose to pay extra for a premium service.

I might end up paying for this, just 'cuz I'm really interested and excited about it, but let's be real. This is an obvious step backwards for the foreign fan of professional Starcraft.

The prize is ridicolous - I can buy payTV with that ammount of money and get ad-free entertainment 24/7 on several channels. Furtheremore, there has always been a free option available - ALWAYS. Has it to be pirated now, they are gonna cripple themselve like the whole music, movie and game industry did in the past.

I think most of the TL members are smart and know enough about networks and technology to agree that a HQ-stream for thousands of viewers requires a lot of stuff that costs a good ammount of money - so nobody would mind paying a fee for the HQ stream- no doubt.

But charging everything is just a joke and will throw back the step you - Gom - did forward in the SC2-esports-development. Besides - what is better:

Having a view hundred viewers (regarding the poll I doubt it will pass the 1k mark) paying the fee

Selling advertisement-places for streams that hit 20k live viewers with ease and getting some extra cash for HQ-stream fees?

Gom - if you are seriously reading this, I hope you get the point and reconsider this - work with the community and not against it or you'll have to face piracy on your streams (and that costs even more money)
Team LifeStyle - it's more than a game

But they dont charge the Koreans. Its free in Korea. But, for some reason they believe the western market are more willing to shell out money.

Are you sure that is correct? Are they milking the foreigners or is this an flat rate for the world? The latter is fair.

They aren't charging Koreans, since the event is going to be broadcast live on MBC with standard ad rates for millions of viewers, this is going to make them a hell of a lot more than a few thousand (at the very best) foreigners purchasing 20$-50$ packages.

Why not do stream ads like hulu? If what you say is true then they are making a mistake. I guess there is only so much time in the week to make business decisions.

lol how many people are gonna pay for this seriously...they're gonna have like 500 viewers. 90% of the people here are college kids or younger. Who does GOMTV think their audience is here? They're either seriously overestimating the interest in GSL or just plain ignorant. Add to that we've been watching OSL and MSL for free for years now with way higher quality of players. I can't seriously fathom what they were thinking when they came up with this...I'm actually insulted by it

Surely GOM has to respond to this, right? I mean, every thread in their SC2 Forum is a complaint about their pricing.

lol.

I agree this is a step backwards for the foreign fan. Perhaps GOM needs to make short term money before it makes long term money. They obviously don't regard the foreign market as substantial.

i'd be interested in hearing what tasteless and artosis think about this, but i doubt they're allowed to badmouth their employers even if they don't like what's going on here

Yea, if they stayed tight-lipped about even getting to cast for as long as they did, there's no chance we're going to hear from them on this. =(

In this case having hundreds or a thousand paying customers is best, since advertisers pay exactly 0 dollars per international Internet viewer of the traditional broadcast. 99% of the profits come from live regional television broadcasts, 1% comes from regional Internet viewers.

If GOM doesn't make that much from these streams/vods ... I wonder how long they'll keep Tasteless and Artosis on this SC2 casting gig.

I ain't happy with Gom charging for both live & VODs of GSL (just charging for live would be understandable..)

But for the rest of us who still wants to watch GSL, I am sure there will be uploads of GSL TV feeds (torrent, etc), even though I have a feeling they won't go up on Youtube due to copyright law.

Those torrents aren't tough to find on Korean websites.
If it is okay with TL admins, I would not mind linking them once they come up.
(although they prob wouldn't have the English commentaries..)
Come get some

Hmm... I just realized that there is no one-day VOD pass. So if someone only wants to watch Idra matches, but can't be up for it live, that is impossible.

I was really excited to have the GSL open up big but I don't think I'll be able to purchase their service this time around. It really sucks because TeamLiquid made it into the tournament and I was ready to watch an exciting trip up the brackets. (Goodluck TLO!)
Was kind of hoping for a free stream with ads everywhere, cause honestly I can deal with that. 30$ for VOD's that will no doubt be released elsewhere for free later is just not a good deal for the start of the GSL imho.

I'm kind of worried they're somehow going to misinterpret the foreign dissatisfaction with their pricing as disinterest in the GSL itself and stop catering to us outside Korea. Then again, it'd be flat out ignorance not to see the tons of posts on their site.

I would like to apologize for posting the email I received from a friendly GOM employee with no control over the present situation. I was very frustrated and as such made a very poor decision in posting the email. It was very juvenile and disrespectful behavior and I regret it.

Copyright, no, but very disrespectful to TL, yes. I was angry and made a horrible decision with rational thinking impeded.

Actually, it's very bad that it got out. I know it was quoted a couple of times, but if any mod that sees this could remove any quotes of the body of the email I would really appreciate it.

One of my posts had some quotes of yours in it. I voluntarily removed them because I can imagine that you probably aren't feeling terrific at the moment. Hopefully that helps.

the problem with this is it seems that they made up a random number budget taht is out of this world and now theyre panicing and trying to scramble their way out.
