Is international bandwidth so expensive to warrant 20 USD for a 500k stream?

i'm not saying it's a good strategy, but i think it has something to do with their rationale behind their decisions.

I guess it more of the hypocritical side than anything people are angry about.

Sorry about your monetary situation Gomtv. Too bad the whole community suffers with it. Why don't you get international sponsors and get ads up and running with 30k+ viewers watching it live with another 100k viewers on vods. Charging that type of money for a live show will get you 100 viewers. This was obviously very hard for a multimillion dollar corporation to think about. /sarcasm.

they are a company afterall... also something that bothers me is that they jack up the price for vods by $10 cause they know DAMN WELL alot of us arn't willing to getup/stay up at 3-6 in the morning.

Edit: The sad thing is that I think there is just enough demand for foreigners to be paying for a stream/vod of this event. I'm certainly not going to be paying for this. I'll just wait for the written summary from a TL writer.

I'd imagine part of Gom's negotiations w/OGN involves a stipulation that alternative coverage should *not* be freely available online. Korea is the prime market here, not us. We are lucky to get English commentary at all, and since advertising is less developed/lucrative for our niche market, it makes sense to have to deal with some PPV costs. If I had to guess, I'd say they are choosing a high price point (at least initially) for a few reasons. A high PPV price will limit the audience, which will avoid high traffic numbers that stress the stream. They probably also are wondering what PPV price point the market will bear...and anyone can tell you it's easier to start high and go down in price over time. Also, they likely expect restreaming, but don't care too much...preferring the people down market use a restream that doesn't hit their servers anyway..

Also isn't this event going to be broadcasted on Korean TV (at least parts of it ... like the round of 8 and beyond)?

So why would they even use 3rd party streaming providers like ustream or livestream. They as a company HAVE to use gomplayer even if it's a terrible player, bad system ( as far as relaying, transferring data, bandwidth needed). Correct me if I'm wrong in this, I'm under the impression this is true. Also I hate using Gom Player in general and installing odd plugins to watch their stream ( octoshape is okay because it's unreasonable that some sites cant pump a lot of bandwidth out to 40,000 users, but gom player, I have no idea how gom plugin/player works.)
