SC2 surely isn't going to develop and grow much by charging people $30-$50 even to be able to check it out. What kind of retarded people do you employ at your company that could actually think this is a good idea?

As if they have some unholy power, they are hired to commentate. Business professionals are hired to do business. I think the entirety of their viewer's holds more weight than 2 casters.

I am very disappointed with this decision to (over)charge for a new tournament of a relatively new game. Don't assume that your viewer demographic is going to be able to afford to pay that amount for both VODs and the stream.

Is international bandwidth so expensive to warrant 20 USD for a 500k stream?

Everyone who is disappointed by this should be posting in the GOMtv.net forums. If enough negitive feedback hits them right at their doorstep then even clueless marketing/sales/mangers/etc might take more notice then here on TL.

But for the love of god please please please please please post in a polite manner. Droping f bombs etc does us no good.

one thing about community "hate" though... it goes away with time. So if you're a big company, all you really need to do is wait for the hate to abate (haha rhyming!). At the same time, Gretech has the option to shut down all broodwar related media if they so desired (of course, there'll be a nasty fight, but I'm just saying they can initiate it). Which means Gretech not only has the power to charge people to watch its league, but also to eliminate its competitors since it technically owns the competition. So in effect, they could try and force you to pay simply by banking on your demand to watch some sort of starcraft.

i'm not saying it's a good strategy, but i think it has something to do with their rationale behind their decisions.

If they were charging something like $10 I wouldn't be so annoyed, but if I wanted to be able to watch live AND VoDs I would be paying $50 a month to WATCH a videogame. I'm sorry but GOMtv has gone completely insane.

The notion of any company "doing it for the fans" is ludicrous. They are capitalist companies. Their job is to make as much money as possible. I don't know why anyone thought otherwise at any time.

Maybe because they constantly say it? Use that line as their number one reason to do anything? I guess it more of the hypocritical side than anything people are angry about.

Thank you Blizzard/activision. You have outdone your self in destroying what you made amazing.
Sorry about your monetary situation Gomtv. Too bad the whole community suffers with it.
Why don't you get international sponsors and get ads up and running with 30k+ viewers watching it live with another 100k viewers on vods. Charging that type of money for a live show will get you 100 viewers.
This was obviously very hard for a multimillion dollar corporation to think about. /sarcasm.

what if blizzard were to cease all outside tournaments. and forced people that wanted to watch high competition have to go through gom ~.~
they are a company afterall... also something that bothers me is that they jack up the price for vods by $10 cause they know DAMN WELL alot of us arn't willing to getup/stay up at 3-6 in the morning.

What ever happened to traditional advertising of sponsors? Make it a free low quality stream and a paid high quality stream ... and let the sponsors advertise the shit out of the event/stream.

Edit: The sad thing is that I think there is just enough demand for foreigners to be paying for a stream/vod of this event. I'm certainly not going to be paying for this. I'll just wait for the written summary from a TL writer.

It would cripple SCII as an esport overnight.

Oh hey TL. Long time lurker...

I'd imagine part of Gom's negotiations w/OGN involves a stipulation that alternative coverage should *not* be freely available online. Korea is the prime market here, not us. We are lucky to get English commentary at all, and since advertising is less developed/lucrative for our niche market, it makes sense to have to deal with some PPV costs.

If I had to guess, I'd say they are choosing a high price point (at least initially) for a few reasons. A high PPV price will limit the audience, which will avoid high traffic numbers that stress the stream. They probably also are wondering what PPV price point the market will bear...and anyone can tell you it's easier to start high and go down in price over time. Also, they likely expect restreaming, but don't care too much...preferring the people down market use a restream that doesn't hit their servers anyway..
It is just a game

If GOM doesn't change this I guarantee you more people will be watching the HDH2 than will be watching the GSL... which is quite sad.

I wonder how much GOM is banking on foreigners to make a profit since the popularity of SC2 in Korea hasn't been as big as they probably predicted before the release of SC2. I guess that makes sense sorta for them to jack up the price and be so aggressive about reaching out to us ... if they don't feel like they will be making much money within their own country.

Also isn't this event going to be broadcasted on Korean TV (at least parts of it ... like the round of 8 and beyond)?

I think everyone keeps forgetting GomTV uses Gom Player and they are owned by the same people.?

So why would they even use 3rd party streaming providers like ustream or livestream. They as a company HAVE to use gomplayer even if it's a terrible player, bad system ( as far as relaying, transferring data, bandwidth needed).

Correct me if I'm wrong in this, I'm under the impression this is true.

Also I hate using Gom Player in general and installing odd plugins to watch their stream ( octoshape is okay because it's unreasonable that some sites cant pump a lot of bandwidth out to 40,000 users, but gom player, I have no idea how gom plugin/player works.)
