look at how many copies Halo sold. the Super smash bros games (melee and brawl). the medal of honor games, etc etc. there are many games more popular if not as popular as SC2. these are all establishes games aswell.

Like it or not, eventually gaming will become mainstream. It will be the cheaper form of entertainment. Might not be our generation, but its headed there.

im hoping thats the case i really am. its why i had high hopes for G4 when the network first came on. big opportunity and potential for that channel to make competitive gaming mainstream. but G4 is now a failure as a channel with the showing of Cops marathon and startrek shit.
so really i dont see it happening anytime soon. maybe it will one day like u say, but definitely not anytime soon.

im pretty sure sc2 has *already* sold more copies than either of those ssb games, and it's only been out 2 weeks. halo, im sure it hasn't, and it may not ever - but fuck halo lol

If lag is a huge issue on bnet 2.0(I assume it is since the players say so) then why is there such an emphasis on casting these games live?
It seems to me that having casters cast a replay that they don't know the result of would yield exactly the same result. Not only that but the casts would be a lot faster(great for viewers who have to wait for caster to join games) and would be a lot less drama filled.(idra/huk situation)
I think that until lag issues are resolved that casting replays with an overlay as was done with the KOTB - which was run very professionally - would be an acceptable alternative.

I think you highly overestimate the PC market, sc2 will never sell as much as super smash bros, any of the smash bros titles.
ssbb sold nearly 10 million copies.
Let's also not forget CoD series where modern warfare alone sold over 10 millions, and that's just on the Xbox 360.

super smash bros melee alone sold over 7 million copies as of 2008. its 2010 now so im pretty sure the number went up since then. so SC2 isnt anywhere near that right now. also the super smash bros melee scene was extremely competitive.

oh i thought sc2 sold like 7 million copies lol i thought blizz quoted $350 million in sales in the first 24hours. what happened with that? now i read they've only sold like 1.5 million copies? whaaat i guess im way off

Professionalism has to be developed and forced by the organization. Look at any sport. They have to deal with some of the most immature, stupid, spoiled jocks in the world. They can still get them in line though with an established system of rewards and punishments. Their rules are, for the most part, clear and unequivocal.
Why do you think Idra would never ever do any of the shit he does in the foreign scene in Korea? He knows exactly what would happen if he did x or y. In the foreign scene, we have no idea what would happen in case of x or y, and decisions are often reversed and made on the spot. Now I actually like some allowance of BM and casualness in the foreign scene, but if you're trying to develop a professional sport then you're better off following the Korean model.
Basic behaviorism people. Human beings behave like savages until you show them the carrot and the stick, and show that you can apply either one consistently in any given situation. Idra is only human, it's up to the organization to set up and apply an effective system if they want to control his behavior. The organizers here have not done that. shudn't it be a given at this point that any professional who has been professional for say.. more than a year, acts like a professional? T_t Just look at this thread and every other one regarding Idra to see all of the positive reinforcement he gets from his behavior in the foreign scene. Hell even I reinforce his behavior because I find it amusing and makes me care more about his matches (in that I want to see him lose against a random and rage). If you take a professional out of an environment of professionalism, of course it's not gonna last. of course it's entertaining to see him rage, but MOST people really only wants to see him lose to see that lol, people don't cheer for him, they wanna see him lose his mind over a lost game which is sad considering he's our only foreigner in korea for the moment... I'd rather see him being friendly and mannered so we could truly cheer for him... =( You're missing the point. The point is people watch. The point is it's a storyline, there is a story outside of the game, a theme. It doesn't matter if he's infamous or some people love to hate him. View counts matter, an audience matters how they get there is irrelevant, but it's threads like these that get people there, and that word-of-mouth (good or bad) advertising is invaluable. Unless you're one of the company owner that's going to sponsor idra I have no idea why you would support this, you're not gonna make any money from this, some people will, spectators won't
Spectators aren't supposed to make money. They are supposed to buy things with their money that the pros use/sponsor. I don't think you understand how it works. If the best player in the world has 1,000 fans and the worst has 100,000 (for whatever reason), and you're a sponsor looking to spend your marketing dollars where do you think the logical choice lies? It's about reach. Idra has far more reach than any other player. Maybe it won't always be that way, but it is for now.

pretty sure u missread. i think it was something like 350k-500k copies sold in the first 24 hours and 1.5 million in the first 48 hours. they also stated it is the fastest selling PC game. but that doesnt account for any other game thats not on PC.
theres many other non PC games that blast SC2 out of the water in terms of sales. zelda is one of them. mario galaxy is another.

Im a bit confused as to why you dont think sc2 will pick up any big sponsors when there already are big sponsors in the game, and its only been out for 2 weeks. You are seriously saying that Gomleague (open to everyone starting in sept) who is offering $500,000 US for their first year, and probably more for 2011. Or blizzards big tourneys , or the Razer sponsored tourneys? What about nvidia sponsoring gosucup? and Intel sponsoring IEM.
There are already big sponsors in this game, and just adding up all of the prize money for the next 3 months seems pretty damn sick to me.
