I saw someone talking about rebinding f1-f4 to their number keys which cover control groups, i.e. making f1 cover ctrl group 5, making f2 cover ctrl group 6, f3 ctrl group 7 and f4 ctrl group 8.
While 1-4 cover their normal keys.
This would make selecting keys which are normally pretty far from my hand's reach a lot easier, I mean to select my ctrl group 8 I have to reach all the way across my keyboard, which can be a pain in the ass when I have to reach back to hit another hotkey to drop mules or emp, or whatever.
So has anybody done this? How did they do it? And is this kosher with Blizzard?
@TheMods :: I didn't know what tag to give this, I thought it might be [D] but wasn't really sure, sorry moderators. :c
Thanks for reading.

I use F1-F4 for camera location hotkeys. I don't really find myself using controlgroups 7-9 anyways, so I don't bind them.
And of course rehotkeying your control groups is kosher with Blizzard.

I have F1-F5 bound as camera locations
You could also set the 5,6,7 and 8th control groups as alt + 1, alt + 2, alt + 3, alt + 4, or any variation of that structure

From now on, if you have a simple question, post it here: Simple Questions, Simple Answers Thread
Yeah, this is totally fine. For tournaments you are allowed to use any hotkey setup as long as it doesn't involve 3rd party software (AKA macros for your mouse/keyboard, etc.). I don't particularly like this setup though, as I think camera hotkeys on F1-F4 are far more important.

I've never used the camera hotkeys oddly enough... I'm not even sure what they do.
Alt might work, that requires two keystrokes to complete though, which can be just as bothersome. Any other ideas? Right now I only use 1-4, 5+ is a bit out of my hand's reach, it's less readily available.
Edit :: I just put 5-8 on Alt + 1-4 and this is actually a lot better, thank you.

Ok I will now reveal my secret : I use the F keys to set up the camera location hotkeys, but once they're set I use shift + asdfcv to select them. As long as you keep the pinky close to ctrl and shift (and you should), it's very fast.

I do this! I use 12345 for units/hatchery and evochambers etc, and f1-f5 for queen.
Then I can also use the F1 double tap to jump to that base. Using it to jump between bases isnt as good as when using camera hotkeys, and also sending drones from one base to another is a bit slower. But i dont just play casually anyway so meh

I originally did that but it was qwerty instead. However, eventually I decided that pressing shift every time I needed to get to a base to inject was inefficient as it required an additional key stroke which could be used for something else. I re-programmed myself to use f1-.

Using alt+q/w/e/r/t works pretty well for me, especially since I play using grid; my thumb doesn't really do much else anyways.

As long as you keep the pinky close to ctrl and shift (and you should), it's very fast. I do something similar to this. I have my camera hotkeys bound to Q, W, E, R, capslock and spacebar. Q for my main, w for nat, e third and r fourth . I use capslock for my production facilities or for my 5th if it gets to that point, and I use the spacebar camera hotkey over my forward warping pylon. Makes it very easy to warp in during a fight as i only need to tap space. I never understood why everyone basically only had there camera hotkeys bound to the F keys. They seem out of the way ergonomically, and I feel you have plenty of real estate to work with on your keyboard if you reallocate your binds smartly.

Hey, not a bad idea to use shift+letters for camera hotkeys! I already use shift+r for ramp camera. Maye I will expand to shift+q-e for bases and s for where my depots are being made.
I need to be faster at macro to spend more time with my dear marines, reapers and helions.

Hmm, what if I get a button under my right foot and use it as a modifier instead of shift? That way my pinky won't get hurt anymore.

Just like a piano :D It is possible to bind it like that, however i have never seen a buyable hardware that is 1 big button or a "car brake" like thing. If you have something with your pinky, you can probably bind a different key aswell, or if you own a over 2 button mouse you can do it with that.

I "use" F1-F4 as camera hotkeys.
I say "use" because I haven't actually managed to use them yet, just have them bound :D.
Working on my mechanics. But yeah a lot of people do that. Rebinding your hotkeys is Kosher, as long as you're not using macros you're fine.

I really haven't found any use for camera hotkeys the only thing you can really do with them is set them to your bases, I already have all of my CCs on a control group, not to mention I find clicking to be pretty fast, especially with my sensitivity maxed.
Right now for control groups, I have a bit of a wonky setup.
Ctrl + 1,2,3,4 to create
1,2,3,4 to select
Then from there on
Ctrl + 5,6,7,8
Alt + 1,2,3,4 to select
Does anybody have an idea of an easy key to hit that I can bind like this EasyKey + 1, sets Ctrl Group 5, and is selected by hitting Alt + 1
All I'm trying to do is bind my hotkeys as close to my right hand as possible, without changing them drastically, because I've gotten pretty used to them at this point.
I'm thinking of keeping all my buildings on the Alt 1,2,3,4 combo
And all my units on the standard 1,2,3,4

I hotkey my queens individually and use F1 to F4 for them, spawn larvae is on F5. It may sound kinda strange, but my injects have become way better since I've changed my setup to that. I think it's mainly because my fingers have to move somewhere "special", so it's easier for my brain to remember that there's something important to do. Hotkeying the queens individually has also improved my creep spread and my drop defense, as each queen is basically functioning as a "base cam hotkey". I also use the ^-key for control group 0.
I've also experimented with other hotkey setups (The Core and so on), but even though I tried it for some weeks, I really hated it. I'm happy with my current hotkey setup, as I'm getting quicker and more efficient without having to play too much.

I dont know anyone else who does this, but I use space and my two side mouse buttons for a total of three camera hotkeys. Unlike people who use the F keys, I never have to reposition my hand at all ever and its literally just MORE efficient. Woot.

I have moved 8 9 0 to ` Q W. I use Q and W often, but I can't get into the habit of using `

Have you tried Alt+,A,S,D,F,Z,X,C,V to recall cameras, with Ctrl+(keys stated) to create them? I love the idea of layering the Cameras Locations on the number keys and ` as well, but unless I have it set up so that Ctrl+,A,S,D,F,Z,X,C,V makes the cameras and Alt+`-5 to recall them, I can't actually use army on 1-5 as well because I lose the ability to create and add to groups. I decided on Alt+,A,S,D,F,etc because it wasn't intuitive at all to set cams to one set of keys and recall them from completely different ones.
It sounds like you're going for a similar approach to what I settled on with the Fleet Keys (Alloy) layout, have you looked its arrangement of the CGS and Cameras? It might give you some ideas on how to make your layout work for you. Explained quickly, it takes Grid and compacts it down to a (as much as possible) Q-E, and A-D key range, and then layers important Control Groups under them. So if you used Alt+Q-E for buildings for example, you can cycle through them quickly, and your fingers are ready to pound out unit production commands without really moving them-- it's pretty fast for something that aims to be accessible.
