Roach-hydra can often die to a pure roach attack, as the hydras die very quickly if they are not positioned well. Positioning them well is very difficult because you need enough roaches in front of them to prevent the opponent from shooting over your roaches, and you need enough roaches around the sides to prevent a flank.

Roaches on their own are very effective since they can both take and deal damage reasonably well. Hydras are better at dealing damage, but are very fragile and thus an expensive risk.

People usually go Roach vs Roach to begin with. If the game doesn't end in the stage where you use pure roach then once you've got a good enough of an economy people build either Infestation Pit or Hydralisk den. Most go for Hydralisk den as it adds a ton of damage and they have longer range than Roaches meaning you can have them behind your roaches safe from any roaches you face dealing tons of extra damage.

Did you actually give any kind of answer to his question? I feel like you answered with exactly nothing, just a description of what he implies he knows about the benefit of adding hydras.
btw soo vs true in GSL was generally just pure roach for a long time, even on strong econ. and on alterzim, true even went for spore cancel to get even more roaches. usually what seems to happen is a switch to hive tech after massive roach trades, but even then you need a core army of roaches to not die to a followup roach push.

The biggest dynamic that separates pure roach play from roach/hydra is the amount of aggression you're putting on. Roach/hydra is a very sit-back-and-macro composition that relies on getting a huge scary army and deflecting any kind of harassment or zoning out attacks. On the contrary, mass roach styles rely more on constant attacking from every direction and every side with burrowed roach tactics and runarounds because they can't win against a roach/hydra ball once it gets up and running. When both players decide to play aggressively, that's when you run into this mass roach vs. mass roach dynamic; the game never settles down, and so both player stick on roaches to try and gain a momentum advantage. Very commonly, if a player invests really heavily into a pure roach mid game, they'll transition to infestors first instead of hydras because infestors better support that type of army. (Eventually, of course, you do add on hydras and vipers for your late game comp).

There is also the fact that a lot of ppl are lazy to have more than 1 control group while having roach and hydra. Which is sad because it's so easy to put the hydra behind and do massive damage. When the roach count get lower you just have to let them fight while retreating your hydra and regroup them with another roach's army.

What do I do against this? http://drop.sc/383329
Once Terran gets a bunch of tanks and thors so I can't get to him, he transitions into mass Viking/BC. I can't figure out how to prevent this from happening. Brood Lords just seem to get sniped by the Vikings, and Swarm Hosts die before they can do any damage.

Swarm Hosts die before they can do any damage.

Giant red flag right there. Losing swarm hosts is a bad sign. ...do you mean locusts? You don't really lose swarm hosts in the replay.

Anyway, after watching the replay, I'd say you were so ridiculously behind on econ that it was a lost game. You were behind on econ from around 8 minutes onward. Get 16 drones on minerals on each of three bases, then you can spend time spreading creep.

As for actually playing against mech, I'm just going to direct you to a certain blue poster's descriptions of SH/muta play against mech (soulkey style):

The general approach:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/sc2-strategy/402752-the-hots-zerg-help-me-thread?page=164#3269
more on muta vs viking/raven:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/sc2-strategy/402752-the-hots-zerg-help-me-thread?page=177#3530

Replay notes (lots of annoyed reactions from me; I didn't censor my thoughts at all):
+ Show Spoiler +

6ish min: he's hiding his 3 cc, odd. sure, build lings in case, but you should've scouted with overlords at 5:30-6:00 to really see for sure what's going on. what if it was 2port banshee? or pure hellbat? you have no idea, all you see is one rax worth of marines.

9 min: you morph 12 banes... why? I understand 4-6 for safety, but you're cutting into your muta count for no reason. use those lings to spot the front to see when he moves out, wait until he moves out to morph banes.

10 min: your third finishes, so you... produce lings. You needed drones, you're already down 6 drones from 2-base mineral saturation when you know he's taken his natural ages ago, not to mention you spotted his 3rd cc with your overlord scout.
At this point you're so far behind economically you might as well call it lost. Down 37 drones to 54 scvs, no macro hatch, no upgrades, no roach warren and you haven't identified mech yet.

11-15 min: still economically behind, no 3-base saturation, losing mutas to turrets.

17-18 min: your first 7 swarm hosts sit idle for a full minute. you should always be rallying locusts towards him to keep him sieged and stuck. instead, he has a free fourth, which is usually enough gas to make the game tough on a large map with lots of expos like alterzim. here, you won't have the option of safely taking far bases to out-econ him.

20 min: he is maxed on mech, you are at 167 supply. If that isn't a warning sign, I don't know what is. It should be the other way around. Or you should have vipers and all muta/SH army.

22+ min: stalemate/standoff definitely in full swing here, but you aren't mining gases at your 5th and 6th bases. you aren't respreading creep, you delayed upgrades after 1-2 upgrades (somewhere around 12 minutes i think) while he is at 3-2. why do you have corruptors and not vipers or infestors (or both)? you also need to respread creep and be more active with your swarm hosts, try to break the rocks behind his natural. if he felt like it, he would just take all the bases on his side and beat you with pure mech gas efficiency.

26 min: you throw away mutas into PDD and seekers. then you give up and sac your corruptors for one or two ravens. he is at double your gas bank and will have 3-3 mech.

29 min: why do you try to micro mutas against vikings? he's firing THE ENTIRE TIME you do your cute micro. you should be managing your swarm hosts instead of just letting them send locusts into tanks.

32+ min: he is at 14k/7k bank, against your no-gas situation. You are dead, he's just really bad at killing you.

hi,

Lately, I ve been moving up the ladder to the point where I faced mid-diamond level players (EU). And it appears my engagement are always critically bad (or at least one super bad each game). This is a big weakness I need to address.
Is there any custom maps than you know of that could help me? (ZvZ is ok, but vs P or BioMines I act as a bronze player (no offense meant)).
Thanks in advance!

baal,
i would recommend just finding a friend or someone to play with rather than using custom maps to practice ur engagements.

Hi

Pretty new to zerg still. Is it possible to rally Queens? So they go to army rally rather than just sit there at the hatch... being fat and all.

no, but if you start producing them all at the same time (which you usually are if you want to rally queens) then when they all pop there will be an icon on the left of your screen which you can click (might need to ctrl click, i don't remember) to select the queens that just spawned

Ew, alerts so bad trollololol.

In honesty, though, if you're using camera hotkeys or base camera method of injection, you shouldn't ever have a problem finding your queens and putting them into a control group after they're produced.

Still trying to learn to use camera hotkeys. I've set them for half a year now (as P), but when shit gets real I never actually use them. Usually end up using minimap.

There's nothing wrong with alerts.

Guise, sorry for being stupid again, but can someone tell me timings of the normal gas for Protoss? So that I can know something's coming when I get with my overlord and see no gas/some amount of gas.

@SC2John - thank you!

i know a lot of people don't like alerts, but i don't even notice them unless i'm looking (i have a large monitor), and the queen thing is literally all i use them for. to be honest i really prefer using the alert method any time i'm producing army queens. it just saves a lot of screen jumping, which i find helpful during crisis management if i'm losing queens or facing mutas/banshees

but yeah it's not like it's insanely hard to just pick them up normally

Probably why i'm still stuck in kr plat is because i'm too lazy to use cam hotkeys. I got used to pressing 55 for my main and 66 for my nat then 77 for the 3rd. I am aware that i get fucked for a few seconds when one of the queens haven't been rplaced yet tho.

What do you guys bind your cam keys to as zerg?

F1 to F5 are bases 1 to 5 for me. F6 and F7 are creep spread (really helpful thing I started doing recently to boost my creep spread). I'd definitely incorporate the cam keys, it doesn't take that long to get used to and instantly switching from base to base just feels so smooth and clean, you'll never want to go back.
I think esports is pretty nice.

I'm assuming you're talking about 2 bases.

In general before 6:00, you want to be poking around a bit and making sure there's more than one gas. If it's only one gas @6:00, a lot of brutal early all-ins can hit you like the MANtrain, 7-gate all-ins, etc. Other than that, if you don't see natural gases down by 7:00, something is definitely up (either 2 gas 2-base all-in or very early 3rd base); most tech related builds have the gases up by 5:00-6:00.

How do you tell the new queen from your inject queen?

In my case I guess the new one is the one that doesn't have 100+ energy, but apart from that?

Probably because for most players they have their queens positioned somewhere else near the hatch rather than below. But yeah other than alerts i dont see what you can do. This could be really useful for this situation only but it' also has a big drawback especially on ling banes fights.

The new queen is usually facing south, and sittin a small distance away from the hatch, regardless of where it managed to spawn. The inject queen is usually still facing the hatch, at the inject distance (i.e., right next to hatch).
Yeah not a reliable method, but other than checking which queen you have hotkeyed (I hotkey all my inject queens together) and checking energy (not reliable either), this is the only other thing I've noticed.

I think we're making a bigger deal out of this than is necessary. Does it really even matter which one you pull? You don't lose any time on injects. In any case, I feel like if you just do it 100 times with camera hotkeys, it's not like you'll ever lose track of where your queens are.....

Side note: If your injecting queen is sitting at 100+ energy, then you should probably pull that one instead (as it really can't use it's energy quickly by injecting and would be more suited for transfuses/creep spread).
