I strongly suggest against playing actual games before you are ready. Working with hotkey trainers and running drills for specific series of actions is best IMO. If you put yourself into actual games you are in a situation where you know exactly what you have to do, but cannot do it, which can be very frustrating.

Whats the key to remove a unit from a control group?

The 5 Stages of TheCore.

  1. Curiosity.
What is this hundred page thread on hotkeys? Hmm, looks interesting. I'll give this a try.

  2. Back to School.
So it turns out you have no natural talent. You don't naturally remember dozens of hotkeys. Your fingers don't naturally press the right thing. Your brain doesn't naturally remember the right thing in the first place. It turns out what got you to where you are now is practise. TheCore has robbed you of that practise, worse, it has robbed you of your illusion of natural talent.

  3. Don Music.
This is the muppet who would scream "I'll never get it" while banging his head repeatedly on the piano. The less said about this stage the better. You need know only the following: It will happen to you.

  4. Inflection Point.
You have been promised a carrot. Either you are the victim of a horrible practical joke or this will get better. And it does. You build your first few structures and units faster. Then your next few. Then the learning curve decreases. The button for Stim is the button for Siege Mode, and your fingers remember. The buttons for building Zealots and Stalkers are the buttons for researching Charge and Blink and your fingers remember.

  5. Faster. Closer. Better.
Cycle through 4 bases calling down a MULE at each. Cycle through 5 bases injecting each hatchery. Press one button to see how many units are queued at all production facilities. Sure you could have done all this before, but not without your hand dancing from one end of the keyboard to the other and back again.

I know only this way:
1. select your cg
2. shift + click the unit you want to remove from the cg (in unit tab or main screen)
3. re-create the cg

I'm trying this out for my second go at learning SC2. So far it's made macroing and using cameras much more comfortable. I actually quit the first time out of frustration at mechanics, and how bad the default keybinds were, so this is a big help.

But I'm having trouble with H for stutter-step micro; it feels really sloppy to me, especially with Stim on I. (I'm using the JIOP layout.) Right now I'm just doing Blizzard's micro trainer map, but there's micro I can do by moving my hand and using the index & middle finger, that I can't do the "correct" way with my ring finger & pinky. Especially Stop on H. Pressing the pinky keys in a combo with control groups feels fine, but pressing the same pinky key over and over again in stutter-step feels wrong.

Does anyone using The Core move their whole hand for some things? Or maybe I can just swap Stop and Build Structure.

Try using 'M', Hold Position, for stutter step. It's higher on the priorities and easier to get to.

It should be easier to keep your index floating above 'I', stim, while alternating Right Click and M.

Hi there,

Going to give it a try. Was going for the StairCase to improve my mechanics, and guess i might do this as well in combination with the TheCore to get the maximum out of it.

Made my first try, and I feel completely lost on the keyboard, but will continue ;-). First trying for a while against computer and custom maps to at least get the main keys and get my brain/hands used to the new lay-out. CTRL and SHIFT are a bit close, maybe a problem, or maybe just something I will get used to. Will start some more practice and time will tell ;-)

Keep up the good work with both theCore and theStairCase !!

Thanks, that's working a bit better. It still feels a bit weird, but maybe I can get used to it this way. Reaching left for H was really distracting from hitting other keys.

Hi,

Where can I find the recommended control groups & camera keys for the Protoss Right-handed Small profile ? It looks like the core document (TheCore 0.6.1) only mentions for Medium ? I chose the Small profile because my SHIFT and CTRL keys are close, so I have to use the right-hand side of the SHIFT key which makes it difficult to reach a lot to the left.

If i use the recommended Control Group keys mentioned in the Main page cells I16-I25 in theCore document, then it includes the O which is already mapped to other things in the Small profile..

Thanks for the help,

Thanks for the help,

the small right hand layouts are shifted one key to the right.
so if you read the document you have to shift the keys in your head one to the right (exeption: alt, shift, ctrl ...).

Thanks. I just figured that out as well, the only thing is that I have only 9 control groups with the small lay-out :-( I think I will remove a harass, so I have a control group for the obs.

In the end this is already a lot more than I can use right now with the grid lay-out, so it all looks great, but I am still a bit hesitant to spent a lot of time and effort on this. I am afraid things will change and then I will need to put in a lot of effort again later on to re-learn everything. For the moment I will continue playing with it a bit, and then make the big decision after a few days of experimenting

At this point TheCore is pretty stable. Minor things might change here or there, and if there are any HotS patches that change abilities/upgrades/etc. then obviously TheCore will change to add support for them, but I don't think you should be too worried about any drastic changes to TheCore from here on out.

Besides, if there are drastic changes, there is nothing stopping you from sticking with TheCore 0.6.1 if you don't like the updates. Most people make their own tweaks to TheCore as well.

I'm a Diamond Level Zerg and I was looking to switch to this because I'm starting to notice that I am modifying the blizzard hotkey setup more and more each week. Is there a spread sheet or something to determine which file to get? I have gone through the the OP like 5 times and the SkyDrive folder for USAQwerty as well and seen nothing that looks like a spreadsheet or a flow chart. I use my left hand on the keyboard and have medium fingers if you want to just tell me which to get .

Ok, anyone here willing on taking TheCore on Merc Stealth Keyboard challenge?

+ Show Spoiler +

On the left side there are 34 fully programmable keys, which can be actually used with left hand. Anyone with some ideas how to put TheCore into that? (f.e. Medium layout uses 35 keys, so one key less shouldn't be a mayor problem).

Ok im feeling like an old man right about now, I can't for the life of me get the camera keys to work. I'm using the right hand medium with no mouse keys. I've watched all the videos and have been stuck on this part for the past 2 hours /pullhairout. I've got the queen/hatchery groups worked out, with the ctrl+shift p for queens and just ctrl+p for hatcheries, ready to practice injects and cant get the camera hotkeys to work.

Ive tried selecting a hatchery before typing alt+9 or 0 or - or l or ; or ' and none of them work. After I press the alt + key command, the shift + corresponding command does nothing. In fact if I have a ctrl group assigned to one of those keys it just selects the unite. HELP ME PLEASEEEEEEEE

shift+p to select queens, not ctrl+shift+p

and i have no idea why this wouldn't be working for you...

So, basically your issue is that setting cameras doesn't work for you? You are on a US-QWERTY keyboard?

Sorry for the incorrect information, and i meant ctrl+shift+p to group the queens, not select them (i think 0_O)

Anyway, problem was my firmware for razer blackwidow keyboard. Took me two hours to realize my right alt key just wasnt responding, after firmware reinstall it is now working just fine. Sorry and thank you! I've been a high diamond zerg for 2 years now, and have only broken into masters once. Hoping that switching to a more efficient lay out will get me over the hump.
