... I suggest following (loosely in your case perhaps) TheStaircase...
but I guess I wasn't very clear about it

A modified version such as something like what you suggested would be ideal.

I'm interested in switching to TheCore, however, I primarily play HotS - is there a hotkey file/system established for this? I read in the OP that they plan to continue updating it for HotS throughout, but I'm not sure if that is actually done. Also, if anyone wants to help me switch or has any tips other than the OP, it would be much appreciated! I apologize if these questions have been answered before - a 115 page thread is quite intimidating, but I'm glad so much work has gone into this! (I'm a right handed terran with either small or medium hands - not sure). Also... unsure if I'm supposed to be using TLM or TRM - it says in the OP that it's named by your dominant hand, but all the keys in TRM seem to be on the right side of the keyboard. Is that normal? edit: never mind, seems like it is. Carry on! Welcome to the fold, Poke! It is indeed rough going for the first few days, but after I was used to it, my APM went up and (almost more importantly) the hand aches / fatigue I got from longer play sessions all but disappeared. If you have a couple months until your next major tournament I definitely recommend sticking it out and switching.

You cannot do this without 3rd party programs or hardware modification on your keyboard (as far as I know). Also, I don't think its tournament legal in most situations.

However, i think it is well worth the painful first couple weeks. I recommend using the hotkey trainer map to train your muscle memory for building units and buildings, and using a unit tester map to practice your army movement / unit ability control. When I learned TheCore, I actually did give up after the first few days. I slept on it a couple nights, did a bit of practice with the hotkey trainer maps, and then decided to give it another go. All I can say is you have to accept that you will temporarily suck, but it will be worth it
