[Q] Any use to unsieged Siege Tanks?

Pretty simple question, but has anyone ever found any merit to using unsieged tanks opposed to sieged tanks? For example, marine and SCV rush, that uses less SCV's and a single unsieged tank. The siege tank could be used for a little extra DPS but mainly as something to soak up damage that the SCV's could repair.

Or is there anyway to make use of the fast DPS of an unsieged tank?

Is there any reason to not get the siege upgrade, for Siege Tanks?

There is zero reason not to get the siege tank upgrade.

However, using tanks unsieged can be good if you have flat out superior numbers. You see it a lot when some guy only has one or two sieged tanks + marines versus about 7-8 unsieged + marines, you just bust the lower number of tanks.

Otherwise, it's not going to work that well.

Always get the siege upgrade.

Keep them unsieged if you don't intend to make a strong full push, but to just do a bad run-by or poke.

The only real usage I've found for them is if you have a lot more tanks than your opponent in TvT, or using unsieged tanks to survive early pressure and transition into mech in tvp. A tank is roughly equivalent to 1.5 stimmed marauders. They're also decent for fending off marine drops in tvt but usually you want them sieged.

A few uses:

- If your opponent roach drops on you, you're better off unsieging, killing roaches as they drop and letting their high dps go to town instead of splashing all over your own units.
- Very strong against stalkers
- Often times better than sieged tanks for a-moving an opponent's tank line, as the siege time takes too long and unsieged tanks are very good against sieged tanks

You should always get the siege tank upgrade, however sometimes it's better to be unsieged. Such as vs broodlords so your tanks dont kill all your marines because they're attacking the broodlings.

There are situations in battle that you don't want to siege your tanks. Basically any situation where if you siege your tanks they won't fire any shots. Either the other guy's army is killed by your army or the other guy's army is so massive that he'll clean up your army in an instant.

Unsieged tanks have greater DPS then sieged ones do, the only difference being that they dont do the splash damage
So in Tank VS Tank situation, an unsieged tank will win.

tvz factory timing rushes don't really need siege until you get to the guy's natural to take out sunken colonies. there are also 1-1-1 TvP timing rushes that dont need siege mode, you just use it to do DPS against stalkers.

Dont get the upgrade if you don't intend on making a lot of tanks past the first couple youre using for your rush. In high numbers getting the upgrade is really beneficial, otherwise marauders are more cost efficient.

I use them in a TvP 9min timing push with 6 tanks and 16 marines. Tanks do very well against stalkers and marines will deal w/ any immortals and zealots.

To clarify what's being said above:

A siege tank, unsieged, will deal higher DPS against an armored target than an tank in siege mode. So, if a tank won't be dealing splash damage, it will deal more damage unsieged. Also, against ultralisks, it's better to be unsieged, and against buildings, unsieged. (The large ones)

against ultralisks i find the best method is to let the tanks shoot once from max range, then unsiege and start shoot-n-scooting.

this basically sums it up. although for static defense (cannons, bunkers, spines, PFs), the range is helpful - although it'll take longer to kill the building, you can hit it without taking damage in return.

Don't forget that unsieged tanks are much better than sieged ones when breaking rocks. I always chuckle a bit when players siege to take down large buildings XD

Siege Tank has a range of 7, unupgraded PF's have only 6 range.

sjow used to do non-siege timed attacks against protoss... maybe 6 weeks ago? I would imagine it had to do with timing, but I havent seen it enough to study it.

When Zerg has tier 3 units out on the field its generally a bad idea to keep tanks in siege mode. It is also good for keeping a mobile army, base sniping new expos while his army is engaged elsewhere, and overrunning Terran tank lines

well sometimes if its literally one tank vs one tank and one person goes in to siege you can drive up to him before he sieges and he can't actually shoot you. Also they're good at killing hellions.

Unsieged tank dps is higher vs. single targets than it is sieged. This can be very useful if you're using the tanks to take down important structures quickly, or important units. Tanks also can kite a good amount of units while unsieged with micro, which is hilarious.

Use them to kill destructible rocks faster.

But yeah there isn't any SC2 equivalent of the Fake Double that I've seen...
