It's like getting lings but without speed. Siege is a necessary upgrade for tanks unless you're going for some early attack, regardless of the fact that they are sometimes useful in unsieged mode

I think iEchoic has the best explanation. Specifically i remember doing a push with marines raven + tank without siegemode vs toss back in beta when i played terran. It was quite strong and i honestly dont know why no one is using it. But i guess it was early beta and every1 was just doing 1base pushes. IDK but they are suprisingly strong against stalkers and roaches.

well, combat wise the only thing I can think of is that unsieged tanks > sieged tanks when facing an army composed of 100% ultralisks, but that never happens.

as for if there is a point in not getting siege tech, there is just about as much of a point in not getting it as there is in not getting zergling speed, collossi range, hydra range, ultra armor and to a lesser extent roach speed.
i.e. those upgrades are (in the current metagame) practically essential to get, even if you only get a mere handful of the associated unit, and those few times that you don't get it, you better have damn good reason. (example: you don't get zergling speed when 6-pooling, even if your main army is composed of zerglings: the damn good reason: you cant afford it)

i thought the range would still make seiged tanks better than unseiged tanks against ultralisks. Plus, by the time u see them, if u try to unseige they are going to be on top of you by the time you're done transforming.

siege tanks have higher DPS when unsieged, but marauders have even higher DPS cost-for-cost (and HP)

You need the unsieged tanks to defend early pushes and it isn't really worth it to get the siege mode for only 1 tank. Maybe even for your first 2 tanks. I dunno

There are a few reasons I would unsiege my tanks.

1. Broodlords
2. Units being dropped on top of my army.

Now, if the question was why you wouldn't even research siege mode? I have no idea, it makes tanks so much more threatening 99% of the time.

I use unsieged tanks all the time. They move at same speed as infantry, and when pushing towards a base you can use hellions to scout ahead, and just roll the rest in to gain as much ground as possible before sieging.

Lots of 1 base pushes vs P involved 4-5 tanks unsieged with raven + banshee and marines. Very polt timing push like.

I use a TvT build sometimes, or used to before hellion gayness, where I push with 15 marines 3 unsiege tanks and 1 medic to quick elevator and work on their base.

In short -- they aren't at ALL useless without siege

Very true. To break siege lines you pre spread into a nice big concave. stim 3-5 marines seperate and run them in, then send the rest in and manually pick off tanks with your tanks and stim hop the marines (at least what I do)

Of course theres a limit depending on the tank count, but unsieged tanks can be vicious because of the high DPS and mobility.

Another good use for unsieged tanks is if you go mech in TvP, and you kill his army in a big confrontation but lose all your hellions. You want to unsiege the rest of your tanks to be able to kill his warp in round of zealots.
