Ok, couldn't find this in search so thought I'd post:
SC2 is my first RTS so if this is pretty low skill have some sympathy for your noobie kin. What kinda got me into starcraft in the first place was seeing a video of the 2 inch drop with terran in sc1. So I present the sc2 equivalent...
This works with any race but I suspect is most useful for protoss as you can have the warp prism warping at the same time and you tend to have very low numbers of transports, otherwise you need to hold position to stop the transport from moving. Basically this works on the principle that the range at which units load into things is larger than the block created by it being up a cliff.
The same method can be used to retreat, just make sure the transport is just over the edge.
I am 100% positive that people can do this cleaner and faster than I can. Enjoy!
Thats some sick elevator action, i could see that being very effective. When you're retreating, the prism is giving your ranged units sight, too Just make sure to get the ranged expensive units out first!
Damn.. that is really cool. I use warp prisms ALOT in PvT but its hard to find as much use as I would like with them. I am sure I will use this sometime..
Lol maybe you can combine the queue trick. Have the army queue into the warp prism and move. Then queue also the warp prism to spam unload. Will test it. :D
Wow very cool stuff. Will be very interesting to see pros catch on to this and use it, eliminates some of the one-dimensional aspects of having ramps everywhere on ladder maps.

Is it just the hold-position transport over the cliff edge?
Typically you have to move a transport back and forth, using this method you can leave the transport where it is and just manage the units.

What you could do is move all your units into the warp prism at once, select the prism then hold down d. As soon as they enter, they leave. This is something not doable by Z or T, as our dropships would keep on moving.

This doesn't work. As soon as the prism is full, nobody else will ever try to enter it.
It does work for Z/T though, just put the medivac/overlord on hold position, and they won't move to pickup units.
I suspect there's a timing in PvP where an immortal/gateway opening could use this to kill a player that techs straight to collosi counting on forcefields to keep him alive.
Can someone link me to what he mentioned as a 2 inch drop in BW? I've heard of the 6 inch drop but I don't know what these "inch" drops are. Maybe someone can explain? Thanks.

My first post
Welcome to TL!
2 inch = dropping over a very short distance; mostly done with Zerg Overlords before you have speed, e.g. to lift lurkers into your opponent's main at an unforseen timing (earlier than you could have both speed AND drop)
good find sir. I hope they patch this to exaggerate the ease that protoss can execute this. Instant ramps anywhere is very protoss.
edit: hey! does warp prism in phasing mode have a rally point command? if it does, try this: 1) set prism to phasing mode 2) set rally point somewhere other than right underneath itself 3) order all units in 4) select warp prism and hold D.
it would be like blink stalkers blinking up a cliff but you could use it on every unit.
Someone said this earlier in the post but I can also see this being ridiculous on Metalopolis as having an entire Protoss army inside my main + instant reinforcements seems pretty hard to stop. it's basically having blink for your zealots
I'll have to give it a whirl with a friend tonight for sure!

Thanks a lot
Yeah I've heard about it on that show where a singer from SS501 becomes a progamer Now I get it haha thanks
The reason is that terran units on the lower level can support the units that have already been dropped off. In particular, siege tanks can shoot at an incoming enemy army from such a long range, they don't even need to be at the top for any initial battle. Marines and marauders can shoot charging slings/zealots and probably roaches given the range they have. Despite having your army "divided" by the cliff, it still fights together.
Because marauders have a longer range and take up more cargo space, transport marines first, then maruaders, and then tanks.
If the enemy army tries to flank around the bottom to get to the tanks, they are stuck running back the long way around. The marines at the top can still cover with shooting and they have to run all the way back around through the marine fire again. If they run toward the top army, the tanks get free shots at the enemy army, without having to worry about getting rushed.

At first I was gonna be like come on, another obvious post... time to see what's up.
But then I see that it's not what I exactly expected, I didn't know that the pick up/drop range was large enough to cover the "ledge". Thanks for sharing! :D It would be sweet to see someone do it SUPER fast it would look so epic especially in a pro match.
Yet another reason to do immortal harass/drops Warp prism is good for dropping and this... sieging ability? lol
Btw is it just me or does the warp prism's field look bigger than sometime in the past/beta? xD
@tofu
Lol I think he did, he's just adding something rather than discussing exactly what the OP said.

That is exactly what i was trying to say lol and makes a lot of sense for protoss to be able to do this so their zealots and immortals can stay with the stalkers.
