That probably won't be for a while, sadly. It took me 2 months to persuade her to host this one. Maybe I can persuade her to co-host one with me once I have the time to host again (in 3-4 months) but I wouldn't hold your breath that she would host one before then.

Hello other town, good job guys, you were way more active then our thread! I just read through of alot of your game, and you guys really had a nice system going with citizen, a confirmed green.

I'd definitely be up for another game, AS LONG AS everyone is active, our game got completely raped by inactivity.

lol it just made your job as mafia that much easier :p

I am curious: how did you guys choose the roles? Was it random, or were there some other considerations?

Thanks, d3_crescentia. I'm still a total newbie when it comes to hosting, though; Incognito and Qatol had to do a lot of patient explaining, hand-holding and last-minute question-answering throughout this game. They both deserve a lot of the credit for that. Also, the true story of Qatol's "persuasion goes something like this:

+ Show Spoiler +
Incognito: "I'm planning to host a new game soon."
Me: "Cool. Will it have clues in it?"
Qatol: *dark and evil scheming* "Incog, dreamflower would love to help you write clues for your game!"
Incognito: "Uh, okay?"
Me: "What? I am?!"
Qatol: "Yes. Mwahahaha!"

For the Mafia, we made a shortlist of all the players who had some kind of content in their profiles or signature and randomly generated the Mafia members from that list. As a result, most of the Mafia members (such as Hyperbola, DrH, Jayme and Phrujbaz) have profiles that are very rich in content and thus potential clue material.

For the town, we randomly generated the roles. I believe we did switch out kane]deth[ as a vigilante and made him townie, though. Vigilante hits need clues just like Mafia hits and kane]deth['s profile was completely empty at that point. In the long run, I think this decision turned out pretty well for the town.

Interesting. There was a time when we thought this clue pointed to someone with nothing in their profile:

With a few quick punches and kicks, Abenson was left mangled before his attacker left the lynch site as quietly as he had come.

That murder drove me nuts... there was so little there in terms of clues!

In the beginning I was a bit sad not to be mafia, but now I think it would be a lot more boring. Not that much to do, unless you try the path DrH took. This game I guess showed yet again that is not recommended, so most likely the mafia just keeps a low profile and does... nothing!

naw, when you have an active mafia family trying to screw the town in multiple ways it can be fun, even when you lose ^_^

You also get the entertainment of watching the town rip each other to shreds and accuse each other of being Mafia. This can make for many hours of snickering and laughter.

Besides, doing nothing as Mafia is just as bad as being too active. There's always someone who's reading the thread and seeing who's trying to post just enough not to look inactive without actually saying anything of substance in their posts. Zona's clever little script in this game makes that task even easier. In the end, I think there's some middle ground of being regarded as respected yet non-threatening that the Mafia should aim for.

Even though mafia are not very active in the thread, a good mafia will be ridiculously active behind the scenes. It just takes a long time to be sure you aren't leaving a trail behind for the town to follow if you die. Also, gathering information is a lot of work.

The style DrH tried is perfectly fine. Other players (qatol and pyrrhuloxia) have succeeded very well doing it. It does take a lot of time/planning though, but with someone really good that trail is not easy to see at all.

In the higher level game a passive mafia who does nothing and keeps a low profile is going to lose, period. Mafia strategy is suprisingly complex and there are lots of little things you can do to influence the game. But everyone except DrH and maybe Mystlord this game was pretty much far too passive and it made them really obvious later.

I don't get this!!!!! Help me!!!!!

Every game I play people talk about waste posts.. What is a waste post????? This is the toughest mystery I have faced in this game!

My advice: Choose the brown (the middle ground between green and red) until you have an ultimate plan to go blue! Focus not on being logical but illogical. Play on whims and constantly change play. Remember Faith > Logic and Faith > emotion. And remember even though the game is over, you must plan for the next game and start forming the picture you want people to think of you. This game.... Doesn't end when there is victory for soon you will find yourself in another world (town). May the owners of those worlds show favor on you!

Being more active can play out really well for the mafiamen. Just gotta be careful and play it well.

Also clues might make things a little too easy for townies i feel, what do others think?

In this particular game we caught 6/7 mafia yet we misinterpreted clues all the way to the end. Just ask poor Hobbes. + Show Spoiler +

Well I was right about the knife pointing to DrH from killer 2 on the first batch of clues. That's the only one I got right b4 I died though.

That is assuming that the town interprets them correctly. The hosts can always tweak balance by making the clues easier or harder. The real point of the clues is just to get people talking. There are some who can take it further consistently, but they are few and far between. In general, if the town follows clues more often than not, they will lose horribly.

Yes, as I was pointing out during the game, wasn't there at least one past game where the clues were totally impossible to interpret? The lion->hunter->"WoW Hunter" twist that made it totally useless and counterproductive to try interpreting clues at all, among other examples?

In this game I wanted to do some misdirection with the clues, but it was so hard to find other players to convincingly match the clues to. Whenever I could successfully misdirect a clue from who I thought it referred to, to someone else, that other person was Mafia too. I already suspected that the Mafia were chosen for their profiles.

I think you should force all the people to fill their profiles before roles are given out. ^_^ Gives Mafia a lot more opportunity to influence the game.

Yeah, if it's public knowledge that mafia are much more likely to appear among those with more fleshed out profiles, that's a huge disadvantage for them. I'm going to add more stuff to my profile too.

Yep. BC's second game (mafia VII) had clues like Feynman -> ferryman -> putting coins over the eyes (instead of in the mouth).
Pyrr's clues early in his games were generally pretty close to impossible too. I think he had a clue that someone "crossed" a yard, relating to a Christian sig as a clue. However, his clues got easier as the games went along.

Dreamflower actually made a post about this in the signups thread I think (don't have time right now to find it) asking people to fill out their profiles, but it was ignored for the most part. It doesn't always matter if we can think up a clue off the username, but there were some users (specifically kane]deth[) who have a name you can't really get anything out of without google (which is generally frowned upon for getting clues - many of the links just don't make sense) and don't have a profile. So of course the host will shy away from giving that player a role that needs clues because what exactly can you write?
