thats about all.

The new Shen splash is pretty cool. Dunno about Wukong's. Trist's is kinda bad.

Ones I like: Shen, Blitz
Dislike: Kayle, trist, veigar.
Rest I'm indifferent.
But how come in almost every single splash released in the last while, you're looking up at them, not even off to the side.

considering they are cropping them for the use of the map icon I think having a somewhat uniform profile is ok

Orianna is the one that I recall least liking. I think its case by case. I preferred old Kog because I associate him with green not metal-grey, for instance. Most of them are generally neutral or improvements for me, but they are generally a minor improvement. However, a few are really bad in the other direction (Ori) which is why they stood out. Sion used to have a really lame splash, and the new one is much better (albeit done in the art style of another major gaming company), but I havent heard much about "man, isn't the Jarvan Splash terrible, better fix that" so it barely moves the needle.

Old Trist art is horrible. The new splash could have been better but it's still a massive upgrade. Also, they are clearly restricted in what perspectives to use because they use cropped versions for the in game icons and they have to be readable.

Higher resolution != better. Could have a splash art of a flailing dildo in 4k resolution for a champion, doesn't make it better than the old one. (unless the old champion was a stationary dildo doing nothing).

Splash art can be weird sometimes.

kogmaw's might be the worst.
But even in things like Akali's which looks somewhat fine, the icon is kind of dumb... But that's not the biggest problem, her pose is completely unrealistic. You can try to attempt to have your right arm forward and slightly to the left, your torso bent slightly towards the right and your left arm to the back like that and see how it goes.
|
Biggest issue I see with the new splashes is the similar orientation (upward perspective, champ looking left) with similar color schemes (dark blue & metal grays) making for a poor transition to headshots. Ori is already a big gray blob on the minimap - that's likely to get compounded when you add Shen, Shaco, Talon, and company to the mix. Even Rumble -- whose new splash is almost entirely engulfed in flames -- somehow has his face obscured in shadow.
I think that particular angle that they keep going back to looks kind of dumb in general, but there's a readability concern to be had as well.

Blitz, Ez, Kayle, Shen and Zilean are pretty clear upgrades over their old splashes, The rest are okay but not really clearcut improvements.

I suppose I tend to evaluate art work based on the technical proficiency required to create more so than the actual contents. The more that I think "damn, I couldn't pull this off myself", the more impressed I am. Kinda pointless arguing over art anyway, it's all subjective. Either you like it or you don't. There's no good art and no bad art, just like there's no good music and no bad music. Just stuff you like and stuff you don't.

They actually managed to make Janna look even skinnier than she already is. I'm impressed.

skimming the article because it popped up when I was playing a game earlier, I skimmed past the kayle faceplate and thought it was Xin

As the resident yordle expert, the yordle splash updates of Trist, Veigar, and Rumble are massive upgrades over the old ones and I like them all. I actually love the explosive glee of the Tristana splash but it seems I'm in the minority in that respect. Which I'm okay with, even if you're all wrong.

New trist splash is way better than old one, but it's still ass. The overall art style of the new splashes just seem a bit off.
Also a ton of the new icons are sort of ass
