Analysis of names in gaming (LoL in particular)

1. [alphabets]][numbers] (e.g. smithy99, heartlovesex69)

The worst offender for noob names, appending numbers to a name typically is a lazy naming tool reserved for noobs. As evidence, no pro has numbers in their name. Low skill group.

Exceptions:
All-numbers case (we'll get to this later)
420 (sometimes)
Numbers used as onomatopoeia or as a word/numbersplay (e.g. ihad6lastnight)

2. [numbers] (e.g. 2009, 4875 )

Typically a naming convention adopted by Chinese players. Be wary of these guys, they're usually pretty good.

3. [ALLCAPS]

Highly polarized group, usually having strong personalities. Typically higher variance in skill, being either very good or very ungood.

4. xx[something]xx (e.g. xxYOLOxx, xxSHINOBIxx)

Baddie, no exceptions

5. [insert anime character/reference] (e.g. sasukekiller, Yoruichi)

Popular names for the otaku-types, the skill level can be very different, depending on the anime characters used. A general rule of thumb is, the more obscure the character, the higher the skill (due to higher age typically associated with watching less popular animes). Also, the obscure characters within an anime typically will have higher skill as well. Expect sasukekiller to feed while Lucy tentaclefucks everyone.

6. aLpHaBeTs (e.g. sOnIcBooM)

Typically displays moronic / twit-like behaviour. Low skill group.

7. Propercapitalization (e.g. Excalibur)

Usually related to higher intelligence. High skill group.

8. Foreign language (e.g. 你媽媽好強, 징벌의 전장)

Foreign players in a foreign server (e.g. Chinese / Korean players playing on NA servers) typically are more skilled than the locals, since there's some selection bias in that casuals don't typically make the effort / have a need to play on foreign servers. High skill group.

9. [action or phrase] [champion name/ role] (e.g. Top Only, Nidalee or Feed)

Good at that role and nothing else. High/low skill depending.

KiWiKiD would like to have a word with you.

really? you want to use kiwikid as a counterexample? l0l

I would hardly consider him "low-skill" lol

g0atsebusters falls under 'Numbers in name', but with an exception since the 0 is an o replacement. Also penalized for poor capitalization. Overall, not too high-skill, especially coupled with the reference to goatse which is rather troll-y and immature.

TLers shouldn't be allowed to be in bronze.

We should have a how to not be in bronze seminar.

Step 1: Don't get into bronze in the first place, much less stressful than getting out.

Having played with the entire gambit of silver league, I'd say there's a pretty noticeable skill gap between low silver and high silver. Silver league is a lot of people.

I think Bronze is pretty much the same way, big difference between bronze 5 and bronze 1.

The thing is, any diamond player can and will make a blanket statement about every player gold and below, similar to what you did about bronze players. There comes to a point that you outskill bronze players so much that you really can't tell the difference between them.

Silver feels like a league where players can play 1 role / champion really well but don't always do it so they play really well some games and feed horribly in other games. Another archetype are the players that do pretty well while winning usually(leading to many stomps) but when they / anyone else does poorly they rage hard and flame everyone and feed. Another archetype are players that play well in laning / early game but then have the most awful decisions / dives later on and throw leads that would be easy to keep otherwise.

The actual mediocre skill stable players are actually really rare it seems.

I think the biggest noticeable difference between high silver and low silver is that in high silver you don't see many people anymore who just make really moronic build choices. The people who are playing support but hate supporting still buy wards, people don't start mid/top with dorans items anymore, etc.

You still see junglers who have one predetermined build order they go, which is tuned for a jungler who's fed all to hell, and still try to go it even if they're like 0/4, which bothers me, but in general the build they're trying to go for makes some sense, just not for that particular game.

I think you're right about the decision making though. I'm just starting to feel like I have some semblance of understanding whatever the fuck it is I'm supposed to be doing outside of 20mins into the game. When I watch my friends in silver 5 play they get in these positions where it's 30-40 mins in and they have a clear lead and still just sort of wander around the map not doing anything with their lead.

If they knew how to play from behind, and how not to throw leads, they wouldn't be in Silver.

I'm just bad mechanically. I don't play enough to improve really. ARAM being released was pretty much right up my alley XD I would like to get into Silver for some dignity but once again just a time issue.
