His early early game is meh, but once he gets a tear+cata, he's literally even with every other AP mid out there. With blue buff, he can afford to hit anyone with QWEQ which trades evenly with every other mage out there. Where the hell do you get the idea that ryze is a poor mage until lategame?

You only need to ward lane bush + river if your mid has just one ward (and everyone is going to have 5 million wards now)

uhhhhhhhhh not sure if you're trolling but ryze has been one of the STRONGEST ap mids since his remake if you give him an inch he takes a mile, builds pure tank and still out bursts and out-dps's every other mage in the game ryze is silly strong, just not played very frequently

Remember that these are all some-what experimental. One of the problems with the internal testing at Riot is that there's not enough people to fully "stress-test" everything. There are going to be abuse cases that get out. That being said however, testing does reveal some very interesting things about whether where power levels lie in a practical sense rather than in theorycraft land.

Well new items are always hit-or-miss. Morello's Evil Tome, Cloak and Dagger, Athene's Unholy Grail (which may need a small nerf).

Simple math on spirit stone, it's about 300 gold under cost - in other words, you pay as much for the gold generation as with the gp/10s - and treating wards as 75 gold each it generates about 60% more value.
So... yeah. On the other hand, generating wards definitely isn't as good as generating an equivalent value of gold, simply because you can spend the gold on wards or anything else you like.

His winrate in soloQ seem to suggest that he is kind of trash-tier for soloQ play.

I can apply pretty much every thing you said (outside of the poke) to Karthus. That doesn't stop him from being arguably the strongest team-fighting mage in the game come mid-game to late-game. Him and Ryze are the exact same type of mage, except Ryze does what he does to people one at a time.
