With Melee, I felt like I could get incrementally better by just playing the game all the time, but other games have always left me feeling like I need to spend a ton of time in the lab which doesn't do it for me. Still really like watching SF4AE and UMvC3 right now, even if I enjoyed watching third strike and MvC2 more.
And idk what to say about the community. The Melee community I grew up with was cool as hell, but it varies from region to region and game to game so I got nothing.

Hey, fuck it, just put on a VOD of a Curleh Mustache while watching LoL. It's not like the commentary mashup could provide less relevant commentary than the normal LoL play by play. Gimme dat Yipes and ChrisMatrix hotness.
Or, let's get a kickstarter to pay Team Rushhour to become LoL commentators.

I like Rivington because he doesn't try to pretend he knows more than he does and can stay pretty smooth no matter what happens. I think there are many better casters, but he is tolerable.
Every other word Phreak says is wrong. I want to put a chair through my monitor every time he comes up with these outlandish rationales for why something just happened. I toggle mute on and off as he annoys me. Frequently misses notable events.
Fuck Jatt; he's permanently muted.
Kobe is a really enjoyable caster. He's really quick on his feet with casting and gets most of his analysis right, though he makes noticeable mistakes that are presumably related to being out of the loop from not playing as much and not following all the competitive events.
Wombat's analysis is lacking, but he's able to roll with things pretty well and keep it entertaining. He's good for smaller tournaments that you're listening to while doing something else, but not what you want for something you're intently watching.
FourCourtJester is one of the absolute worst casters out there.
Studio is really awkward all of the time. On camera he takes these weirdly long blinks. His casting in game is average, but tolerable.
RedBaron does a good job with analysis and generally is well-versed in the competitive teams, so I like him.
HatPerson is awful. His analysis is generally very poor and he gets easily exasperated when too much is going on. He's prone to just screaming randomly. He is very low tier caster quality.
Remember Kararawr? If not, be glad. Probably the worst caster there has ever been.
Colby... bless his heart. He deserves credit for the time and energy he invested boosting up competitive League, but he is still a really bad caster. Poor analysis, can't really do play-by-play, misses action.
Panky is rather enjoyable. You don't see him much 'cause he's over on the EU side of things (in fact I haven't seen him in quite awhile), but he did a good job of handling both casting roles in solo casts. He has a nice voice for casting, but his analysis has many holes.
Dan Dinh is basically captain hindsight. Every other sentence begins with "so what happened was" where he repeats what just happened after having watched it in slow motion on a replay. Thanks for the recap of 10 seconds ago. The worst part is that his delivery really kills any buzz of excitement the event had caused.

the smash community in my area was annoying as hell. they were always mega demanding, always arguing about the rules no matter what the tournament, and i remember they boycotted a $5 tournament because the venue wanted a $2 venue fee.
one thing i thought was crazy was that i used to play melee with one of my friends non-seriously and he'd always kick my ass because i didn't know how to combo/l-cancel. then i fell out of touch and randomly bumped into him at evo 2010 and he had a medal around his neck. for 3rd place in melty blood. wtf how'd he get so good.
tl;dr: league needs better commentators

Whats wrong with jatt craton? arent you confusing him with jaws lol to me Jatt looks like one of the best casters for lol at the moment.
and if you already type out such a long post why not add your analysis on Deman, Joe Joe Miller Miller, Qu1kshot and Dan Dinh

in my experience, once you develop that skillset it carries over. i play high-execution characters in sf4, and i recently picked up marvel.. 2 weeks in and i've got a couple fairly advanced combos (wolverine double fatal claw, some spencer one-touch kills, etc) down already. just put the time in!

about Annie, I've actually wondered to myself why she hasn't become more popular with the rise of the DFG army, if you think about it the item really covers a lot of her weaknesses. her W is still way too expensive tho >.> Is max W on Annie a good idea to counter pushing mids?
Always max W on Annie, never not max W on Annie.
Seriously, W is her best skill by far - best scaling, fairly large AOE and can replace bear in a pinch. I usually go chalice early if I want to farm with W though (and the MR helps a lot).
DFG seems ok I guess? Its somewhat weakened by the way her skill rotation works (skills that reward quick use and chunk for a good deal of health making DFG hit for a lot less)

W max vs. Q max is situational. W max has superior creep clear and combo burst damage, but Q max has significantly better trading power in lane because your ability to trade is centered more on a 4 second CD ability rather than an 8 second ability.

My roblem with casters is when they try to explain things that are so basic I feel like an idiot listening.
"The goal is to lasthit minions so you can get gold." or "Taking that first dragon is going to give them global gold."
Then there are the ones who say things that are bizarre/wrong. "Maokai is a really strong farmer against Shyvana."

i max annie W because i harass with stun Q - W. and trading with straight up Q also makes my mana run out fast.
i also tried dfg but i like deathcap because it feels more stable, if you last longer in fights you can get off stronger hits. i think both can work though depending on your style.

W max Annie is 100% reliant on her combo to trade, which creates opportunities for a lot of APs to abuse the period of time in which she cannot combo. Q-max gives you the ability to trade much better between the availability of your stun combo, and actually reverses this relationship in many cases because there are a lot of APs that cannot trade with you when your Q is up after 4 seconds and their spells haven't cooled down yet.
|
which APs are these? can you give examples? (legit question, i really don't know).
i played annie yesterday after having not played her since hitting 30 and back when i could abuse the fact that people didn't know annie had a stun, lol. i did well but yea always trying to learn.
i would think that your average movespeed and lack of escapes hinder your ability to trade, though, so i always played safe and wait for them to make a mistake.

Relevant matchup I've always quoted for this is Kassadin. People have said for a long time that Kassadin crushes Annie, but it's really not THAT bad. A lot of it stems from the fact that Kassadin's Q disrupts Annie's ability to combo properly, and simply trading Q for Q is in Kassadin's favor because of his passive. If you just try to charge stuns, max W, and only try to ever go on full combos, you're going to get crushed because full combos don't happen in that matchup.
Realistically though, Annie's advantage over Kassadin is that she has much lower cd on her main nuke and a long ranged autoattack. She shouldn't be looking for combos against him, and instead just try to apply more sustained pressure with Q and autoattacks, as there's that ~5 second period where your Q is up again and he can't respond with a Q because his isn't up again yet.
