It should just automatically make the top 3-5 ranked games with the highest average Elo be featured games. Easy.

I assumed they'd feature the highest ranked solo queue game at the time or something.

Anyone know if they mentioned a spectator limit?

If they're smart about it, they just have the game server relay the data to the spectator server which in turn relays it to everyone else, so that no one in the game is impacted regardless of how many are watching.

It took them a long time to come up with the feature, what we are watching is essentially a replay that gets consistently updated by the server. I guess they could release replays now but are waiting to spread out the awesome.

No limit on featured games. They didn't say anything about other games iirc.

love the dota2 copy of directed camera. it was a fantastic feature in the dota2 world championships and it's gonna be so good in lol. spectator mode looks great, now let's start a betting pool on how many bugs it has x_x

They had something like featured games in guildwars. they just always broadcasted some random games from the top 100 teams or something.

and I am I the only one thinking that this timeshift thing means that we're getting close to replays?

I got the over on Riot's servers shutting down ranked queue for 2 hours the day it is released.

Maybe. Depending on how they're doing spectator mode though, if they do replays the same way the replay files will be enormous. Although, since they have a way to do the timeshift-thing without completely destroying their servers, then maybe they ARE close.

While i am not very tech-savy, i am pretty sure that they have thought of some way to make spectators not impact the gameplay. This sounds like the first thing you make sure of when producing such a feature, since pretty much everyone would rather have no spectator feature then lag ingame.

There's no reason why the main server would have to be slowed down by additional spectators, given that it's pretty much a read-only interaction (you're not modifying the game world by spectating, unlike the players).
IIRC there's also a delay between actual game and what you're seeing, which makes it even much simpler technically to spread the load to unrelated servers.

I find that I have dealing with kassadin as morde. Apparently the way to deal with him is to abuse him early since he has a really hard time farming and trades poorly but as morde before a certain point I find this just not to be true. I find myself getting zoned since I can't trade with his Q and AA's. What am I doing wrong?

Quick notes on Spec Mode:
  • Spec Mode uses separate servers from actual games so will not introduce lag into the actual Live game. The new servers should be able to handle the stress from spec mode. Worst case scenario on release, they just temporarily disable the feature or put in limits.
  • Riot is aware of how streamers need views to make money. They are probably the only company that features player streams after all. Main thing here is that streams = hearing the pros and hearing a personality, not just seeing the game. One main reason of being able to drop into a featured game is to let people practise being a caster in a high elo game.
  • 3 min delay was tested and deemed to be adequate. Can always be adjusted if abuse cases are found.
  • If you think this is cool, wait till you see the finished replay system.
