I'm starting my ranked games again and this time with the proper mindset/preparation - being able to fill all roles, knowing why I play (gaining ELO up to a point where I can consistently play the role/champ I want) and such. So basically I arranged a roster of champions that can either carry the game hard or cripple the enemy enough that even AD carries with 10 cs at 30 minutes can carry. I am however short a spot on my top lane roster. Basically what I want for toplane is some form of CC (doesn't matter if hard or soft) and obviously hard carry potential.
The full roster so far looks like this: Jungle: Nocturne, Skarner, Shaco Mid: Ahri, Sion, Brand AD: Corki, Graves, Kog'Maw Top: Gangplank, Tryndamere, missing Support: Lulu, Janna, Sona
I was thinking about Riven, but apart from her great lane control through stuns she lacks a bit sustain and is not that good at raping 1v5 (as GP and Trynd, that is). I'm not sure about Olaf, I really like his "I do damage to you and you will die if you have less +hp than me" approach. I played against a couple Olafs, and even tho getting a couple kills early on as soon as they get just the tiniest +hp items they rape me. But then again it's a double edged sword, no idea how he would fare against four or five champs.
Any other champ suggestions? Maybe even the infamous Irelia? Or... TEEMO?! :D
Edit: I love Singed btw, but I really dont like being behind for most of the laning phase/dieing early/not able to fight back, even tho he is undying in later stages. Also not much of a carry potential there I think?
Riven one of the strongest top laners atm and a great pickup there.
Another really strong CC/tank top laner that I like is nautilus. He has great CC, is hard to counterpick, hard to push out of lane, and he actually can carry because he has very underrated damage. Lots of fun too, my number one favorite dunker atm.

I don't play her as much, but when I do see her do well, it's because she goes against someone she can instakill at 6, which is generally the mid lane squishy casters than top lane tanky dps. As he was asking about solo-queue, that's just generally where I see her excel as long as you can bait out the CC and jump past it.

So I just watched the patch preview. Were the Mres runes that good? I have always used scaling AP runes when I played mid and I've been fine. Looks like this is a buff for me

Just played Ziggs for the first time.
I don't know if it's because I normally play weak champions or not, but this guy is insane. Super strong with crazy damage aaaand a lot of fun.

I decided on Riven after testing her out in a normal draft. Why? Killing Maokai + Katarina + Singed when they ganked me. I died after to Singed poison (or Ignite...) tho but that was fucking epic. I got two early kills on Singed (including first blood), had two dorans boots and bf sword at level 9.
Anyhow, I flipped through the champion screens and am wondering what actually DOES hard counter Riven? Or does she merely have "even" match-ups? How would my other two top champs (GP and Trynd) fare against her? She seems to be able to kite melees around all day and has two fantastic gap closers against ranged ones. And even if you get kited by lets say Ashe when Q and E have CD, man that ult REALLY hurts... So yeah, I'm gonna play Riven as third top option ^_^

Many "pro" players - most notably Alex_Ich - have whined for a while that they HAVE to rune for MR because the meta in mid is more like sit back, just harass, and farm all day, when they would much prefer to go right at it and duke it out. Not going MR against enemy harass would force them back too much/early, thus losing the farm.

Riven doesn't really get hard countered by anything. Kennen and Teemo are hard matchups but if you play exceptionally well you can win and even kill them in lane. Olaf is probably one of the hardest because if you don't max shield first his true damage will start shitting on you, so you kind of have to stall it out and farm unless you get ganks.

She has no real hard counter just because of how her kit and numbers work, but she has a couple champs that you actually need to try against (for me mostly Kennen/Teemo/Trynd).

Goldfather's guide on solomid says trundle is one of the best counterpicks because of his damage debuff. I can't say from experience because I don't play much riven. She doesn't have any obvious bad matchups, though, which is another reason she is so strong. Kennen would probably be a good pick, still just theory crafting though.

Anyone want to play some games on the PBE? The general skill level on there is... around .2 Teemos. Just join LiquidParty or something.
Hecarim has some pretty damn stronk ganks. He can chunk a good half health with the inital charge+Ult combo, and his E is basically the bastard child of Rammus' Powerball and Alistar's Headbutt.

Hecarim better have some badass animation with gallop and wild sounds and stuff on his ult.

Ya. I'm trying to login right now. I'll totally play with you once I get in.

Looks decent, all of those champs are strong if played right.
Riven is allright top laner, can beat numerous of popular low elo picks, is good with ganks etc.
Personally when I went for my elo run back at season start, I mainly played Kennen top. (AP) Counters almost everything, has no bad matchups, and is incredibly strong later on in teamfights. (If your interested, I got to 1900 elo before going to a hiatus due to work, but the highest elo back then was a guy with 2020 points or so, so needless to say, it wasn't exactly scrubs I was beating with him.)
Beauty of it all? He's never banned for some reason.
Also something I've learned: It doesn't really matter what you play, as long as you play it good. Having a good range of heroes is fine and all, but if your godlike with a few of them, I think you will reap more benefits. For me this was Kennen top, Annie, Ahri, Morgana mid and Nocturne jungle.

She trades off a dedicated role for a little bit of everything. Umm. Jack of all trades characters (almost) never work. I.E. Spellpower Ret paladin (wow) Tri-Sorc (Diablo2, unless you have tals, then its viable but not great) (also various other hybrid builds blow) Mario (SSBM) (also see, Luigi) Klobb (Goldeneye) ETC Sometimes a Jack of all trades character gets temporarily buffed into OPness because they become viable in a single role while still being mediocre+ at the other role(imagine Kayle with Ryze's AP power, but maintaining the same sustain/supportiness, another example would be making Annie's shield way better, and able to be placed on any team member). Spell power and such on Ret Paladins isn't their problem btw. It's randomness. Saying they're a jack of all trades character and it doesnt work because of spell power is totally wrong.
SP ret was an assumption made by blizzard in TBC, it was wrong, but also was why they were worthless.

Aside from the fact that hecarim is a pony and is supposed to be a fast moving champion (not in terms of dashes/blinks but more because of his movespeed thingy along with the passive) he seems kinda meh.
Btw where does akali stand nowadays? I'm mostly asking about solo-queue rather than in the competitive scene. Akali's where she's always been: when fed, unstoppable. When locked down in lane, meh. She can go mid or top (better mid, imo), and does well by harassing/pushing then roaming once she hits 6. I seem to be the only one really psyched about Hecarim. Imma jungle him all day, MS ganks, ignoring creeps, nice sustain, and that ult looks great. Thinking tanky dps (FoN/TF core), maybe Shurelia's for burst item use, etc. Sheen proc on that TF seem great with his high base AD and spammy Q (2 second CD as long as you hit things). Seems like he'd do OK top, but have a Morde issue of pushing too hard if you hit any buttons since it's all AoE aside from E. As primarily a jungler, he looks like a nice addition to my roster.
Messed around with jungling him on the PBE. I started boots and it worked out alright, but some help at wolves and a good pull make a huge difference. W at level 1 is better than Q for certain, the slightly better damage from Q doesn't make up for the loss in healing.

I dunno about you but I'd pick Anivia over Orianna pretty well every time... Anivia does share many weaknesses with Ori, she is mana hungry as hell, she is hard to play... but Anivia just doesn't falt out lose to as many people. She also has more burst damage and a much easier time pulling off a kill combo than Orianna does.

Been messing with Horseman on the PBE. Initial thoughts. W is awesome. Late game, you pop that shit in a team fight and you cannot die. Scaling on passive is extremely underwhelming. I haven't tried him with MS quints, but starting boots gives +8 damage. At lvl 18 with Mob boots, Tri Force, and Phantom Dancer (which is pretty much the extreme of practical move speed from items) I was getting like 35-40 bonus damage. It's a nice damage bonus for starting boots, but not something you're gonna itemize to exploit. His charge -> ult combo very strong. I found Q to pretty weak vs monsters (damage is halved to minions and monsters) and it was doing considerably less damage than my auto attacks. It was extremely spammable however so it's pretty useful for getting sheen/triforce procs off.
Overall he's definitely going to be a jungler. Too mobile to strand in the top lane. Very good ganks. The fear on his ult is a lot easier to control than Noc/Fidd/Armorbear. You guys will want to try it a few times to see what I mean, but basically if you ult past someone, they will get feared behind you and run straight into your team. It's pretty great.
Seriously though, you'll want to ignite him in a team fight. That W is strong.
