You could make a logical argument based on how games actually play out, that really what Philo Stone needs to makeup for in gold, is 15 AP. It is superior in mp5, and superior in any situation where damage is traded at a non lethal level(the vast majority of lane phase, and for Soraka, probably most team fights). Even in a case where you were killed, you have to actually remove yourself from the moment and consider if 100 more HP would've actually meant you living. Were you at 100% hp when this engagement began(you may have been if you had philo instead of that DRing)... Essentially my point is leading to what we all actually know: this game doesn't work in a fucking vacuum. You can't just throw out math and call it a day, this isn't a WoW DPS spreadsheet. | ||

Also I guess my big fat disclaimer is that I'm notorious for building for the situation, and I have no qualms with buying like 4 small items and ending a game without ever making a big one. ... much to Neo's eternal chagrin. | ||

I find it funny that so much time was spent arguing over the LEAST important aspect of a support (you're not getting gold worth shit who the fuck cares what you build?) rather than areas in which a support can actually greatly effect the game (eg: how come EU supports >>> NA supports so hard?). For example ward placement/timings (when is the optimal time to place wards against all the junglers/lane matchups?) as well as optimal CV timings and placements (so many times you want a CV to cover for something and your support goes "nope just used it to check their blue that the enemy mid clearly has"). | ||

If there is a lot of fighting going on, I think the doran's rings would work better because you are more useful in fights. However, if it's mostly a poke war + farm fest, I feel that getting the g/10 items will benefit more because that's more income during that period. The reason most pro supports get g/10 is because there's not a lot of kills during laning phase, which means that spending the money to get items that provide good stats as well as increasing income for wards is better. | ||
